Fleetside Tailgate

5 Attachment(s)
I'm planning on going with a smooth aftermarket tailgate and won't be needing the original tailgate off my 72 SWB. As far as I can tell it's original. It has some surface rust and there are a few holes on the inside at the bottom but it's pretty straight.

Local pick up available in Upstate SC. I can also meet you in the area or in/around Charlotte on Saturday, April 21st at the Auto Fair at the speedway. I'd rather not ship, but if someone can tell me how to prep it for shipping (does it need to be in a crate?) I'll look into that for you.

$190.00 with handle/rods/latches (all work great) or $140 without. - New Price - $150 with handle/rods/latches or $100 without plus shipping

I got a great deal locally on a smooth tailgate this past weekend, so I have room to lower my price.

NEW NEW PRICE: $120 with handle/rods/latches or $75 without plus shipping

Anything (other than the smooth gate ;)) you'd consider trading for it? I'm coming to Charlotte w/ a bunch of parts...

Re: Fleetside Tailgate

VA72C10 - do you have new parts or used? I'm trying to replace everything I take off with either new or NOS parts unless it's in really good shape/rust free. My plan is to put a 68 front clip on my 72 - so I'll eventually need fenders/hood/rad support/grill/etc. I'm also looking for a non-stock steering wheel. Let me know what you have...you never know what'll spark my interest! - Matt

Re: Fleetside Tailgate

I have mainly nice used or smaller NOS. I have a really nice 68 front grill...but it's complete with hoops and I'd prefer to keep it that way...and I need 250 for it. Also have the lower splash shield for 75.

VA72C10 - PM sent with my email - can you send me some pictures of the grill - that may be a possibility.

I have a smooth gate that came off my 69 C-20.. I can check and get back with you. As I can remember the only thing wrong with it was the spot welds on the sheet metal seam (is not seen when closed) popped loose. Also I could send you some carpet pad if you would ship. It works well on body panels and gates.

Re: Fleetside Tailgate

HeavyMetalChevy,

I'm ok with shipping it, but it won't be cheap. I looked into shipping it to Birmingham Alabama and it was about $100. Let me know your zip and I'll look into it Tuesday. I think we have some left over carpet pad at work that I can use for packing it. We have a small shipping department, so I also have access to lots of boxes, bubble wrap, pallets, etc for shipping. I can ship UPS and motor freight from there as long as I pick up the tab.

I'm pretty sure I have a local tailgate lined up, but let me know about the one you have. I'll follow up on the one here in the mean time. If you want to send me pictures, my email is crispymatt@gmail.com.

I have shipped tailgates all the way to Arizona from Indiana wrapped in carpet pad and thick cardboard it was like $50 bucks reg. UPS. UPS Freight is for 150+. Tailgates only run about 50 lbs. packed this way. I have built crates before but that was for a 65 Impala grille going to CALI. Also crates for a few MINT and Cherry gates just for peace of mind.

I just ran a UPS estimate to your zip and it's estimating $136.15 using 50# and 70x25x10. I didn't use my company shipping number which may save a few dollars, but I'm just guessing the overall weight and dimensions.

If you know a less expensive way to ship it, let me know. I'd be happy to ship anyway cheaper. - Matt

Found a great deal locally on a smooth gate. Passing the savings on with lower price. Now $120 with handle, $75 without plus shipping.

I just checked fedex from florida to indiana and it was $49.53 using 50lbs and 70"x3"x25" as dimentions. Up top you put 10" as the width, not sure if thats what you typed in at ups. Not trying to cut in,just trying to help you sell this with a good shipping price.

Re: Fleetside Tailgate

I spend about a quarter of my day every day working in the shipping department at work, and I can tell you that every box that's 40# and up and/or that's oversized is beat up. What they don't drop, falls of the conveyor belt or worse. If I'm going to pack an item that's 66x22x3, the box is going to be at least 3 inches bigger in each direction. There's no sense in shipping it if it will be dented & smashed when it gets there. When I ran the numbers before, I "guessed" bigger than I thought, so my numbers may be a little off.

I just want to warn anyone that's interested that it could be $100 or more depending on where it's going and how well I pack it. Once I package it, I'll put the actual weight and actual measurements into my UPS program at work, and I'll do a screen shot for anyone who buys it. I'm not interested in making money on the shipping. I just don't want someone to be upset with what they get when it get's there.

However, if you want me to just slap the label and a fragile sticker on it, I'm ok with that too!

I'd also rather tell you it's going to be $100 and have it come out at $75 than the other way around. That's just how I am (under promise, over deliver).

Anyhow, Chevy072, thanks for the input. Your point that shipping may not be as much as I think it is going to be is probably correct. I appreciate the help. Don't take my post wrong, I just tend to err on the side of caution.

For anyone interested: Now that I have my smooth gate, I can pack this thing up and give you an accurate shipping rate later this week. Let me know if you want me to prep it and run the numbers for you.

Thanks - Matt

Shipping is about $40 for the gate, and additional $8 for the handle/latches/rods (I pulled them off in case you didn't want them and will have to ship them separate at this point.)

So:
$148.00 w/hardware shipped to a business in zip 08867
or
$115.00 w/o hardware shipped to a business in zip 08867

Let me know. - Matt
