My 82 shortbed
1 Attachment(s)
I started out wanting a 06 lancer evolution but unfortuantly my dad wouldnt allow me to get a car due to the fact he wanted me to be in something bigger for my first car. Lucky a friends bf had a 83 long bed which i liked and started to love these trucks. Started searching craigslist everyday looking for something that i could afford and this is what i ended up with and what started it all. My 82 shortbed from the start :metal:

Right away i began to do little things like cleaning up the wheels, anything to improve the look of the truck. had a lot of rust in the normal places but for the price i got it at wasn't bad. Had a 305 with aluminum weland high rise intake ,adapter with a 2 barrel carter carb, and chrome value covers.

Since i knew nothing about mechanics at the time with my uncles help i ordered a bran new holly 600 and began pulling off the old 2 barrel carter due to the fact the choke didnt work so i always had to wait for it to warm up or as soon as i pulled away i would stall out and just wanted to upgrade.

Its been getting me too and from work and school for over a year now. only have made minor changes like painting the gauge covers and bottom of the dash gloss black which i don't have pics of unfortuantly. Around that time i didnt think to take many. bought a dash cap and put it on to due to the fact the old one was all cracked up.

Re: My 82 shortbed
what about a roll pan or sport bumper? that would clean up the look alot
|
Re: My 82 shortbed
It actually did have a roll pan on it.. Just hard to tell from the pic I posted. A lot more pics to come I'm way into the build now just trying to organize the hundreds of pics I have .

Unfortuantly a couple months later on my way to school a girl backed out of her driveway and hit the driver side door. i just beat it back out and primed it. didnt really care at the time because i was looking for another truck in better shape. and insurance paid me :metal:

Re: My 82 shortbed
When i got it it didnt even have a radio in it, lucky i had one laying around and threw it in. other than that im in high school so this truck was how i got around daily. never did much to it beacause of how much rust it had and was looking for something better.

finally on Easter of last year i came across a 86 shortbed in good shape and for a decent price for it and all the parts that came with it. The guy even drove an hour to drop it off the same day. motor was partially apart when i got it and got it running the same night. This is it getting dropped off.

About 40 hours of degreasing and washing over and over again. Then sanding and more sanding the frame, inner fenders, fender wells, and motor were ready for painting. Heres a pic after i painted everything. motor went cast coat iron. painted intake and water pump along with the pullys and put them back on . And new altenator.

Re: My 82 shortbed
After that it sat at my uncles for a couple months over the summer. Was to busy having fun i didnt get to much done to it lol all was well till we hooked up the power steering and realized there were cracks by the motor mounts and around the power steering pump. Front horn would literally twist when turning the steering wheel sitting still. So finished hooking everything up and it was off to my house to get welded.

Began sandblasting around the cracks. didnt have a welder at the time so was waiting for my uncles friend to stop by with one. Realized the front left frame horn had been replaced before and didnt do the best job fixing it.

|
Re: My 82 shortbed
Dang on the hit and run, what a bummer.
Nice job on the other truck, a lot of tedious work in the engine bay cleaning that up but it's looking good. |

Thanks

Re: My 82 shortbed
Dads friend finally stopped by but after closer examining of the cracks he told me he didn't think it was best welding it, wasn't sure it would last. major spider cracking around were the power steering bolts up. and three major cracks by the motor mounts not to mention the left frame horn had been replaced from one off another truck... And another close friend suggested swapping the frames of the two trucks..( which i have always wanted to do a frame off build on it just never thought it would actually happen..) after long hard thinking and permission to use the back yard, well kind of permission lol my dad still wasn't happy about the whole idea. ......................................... AND SOO IT ALL BEGAN.!! :metal:

The first thing to be done was to strip the wrecked truck. Cab was beat up bad and truck was totaled... Hooked a chain to the front fender and yanked it away from the tire with another truck. cranked it up and pulled it around back. here's day one.
|
Re: My 82 shortbed
Id have to say. 30 year old bolts suck.. lol core support bolts were a pain to get out wouldn't even budge. Luckly borrowed a breaker bar from the neighbor and rang right off instead of loosing up. woops

After day one it was just little by little. Started taking off the messed up driver side door. and here's a pic of all the parts piled up in the bed.

Re: My 82 shortbed
man the hit and run was bad enough but the guard rail was a real pain it looks like. you have a sharp 86 and doing a great job with the engine bay. sucks you have to do a frame swap but it gives you a chance to do it the way you want it done.
