71 2wd conversion project
Well after searching for like 10 years, lurking on here for a few and finally having the funds to purchace a blazer I found one on ebay in price range. I went and got the 71 jimmy that had the rust repair started. it is an original maine truck so its pretty rotted. once i got it home and cleaned out i was a lilttle bummed. (the red one below). It pretty much needs every thing from the dash back. I sould say that it did come with most of the repair parts needed, rockers, a piller patches, outer flrs, cab suports, rocker boxes and end plates. But i came across a tub nother 71 blazer tub and went out to purchace it from a board member. this one is pretty decent. It is a south carolina trk. needs the usuall rocker area parts etc. (green tub). so this will save me time and lots of $$$ on the project. Now i have a 2nd frame in the works that has already been converted to 2wd from another board member. my plane is make it 2wd with c4 vette front susp ( that i have ) and eith rebuild stk 350 or upgrade to a ls1. here is a few starter pics. im going to be doing this with my 15 yo son too. he is starting auto trades int the fall.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
no work on it lately. rain and other projects to complete first. But i head out to get a 2nd frame and 5-lug frnt and rear suspension from a fellow board member this saturday. Now i will have 2 blazers. going to keep the red one 4wd and use her as a mud truck. shouldnt be much work to reassemble the drive train and get motor running. i need a tansfer case cross memeber and drive shafts though.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project

Re: 71 2wd conversion project

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
Looks like a nice haul...and this has turned into a 2 for 1 build.....cool! ;)

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
thanks Jeff for pic upload. for some dumb reason my new firewall is blocking photo uploads. havent had the time to figure it out.
Yeah there is alot of parts there, thanks to rochlow. have like 90% of the needed parts to make it a rolling chassis. Va72c10- yes it has turned into that. lol object is to get a roller 2wd then just make the red one drivable to go play in the mud. more rust is lighter weight haha. no work on it this w/e, weather is to nice, i needed a non working weekend and some time out on the Harley. Hope everyone has had a great memorial day w/e and a big thank you to all the vets out there both here no longer with us. Rip Msg Hunter, aka Dad. |
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
No work done on the body or frame. with all the rain, work around the house and then my d.d. took a hit to the frnt left so that burned up my parts fund. hopefully once bike week is over i can work on my trk and get it fixed then on to the frame for the blazer. On a good note, im headed down to the good guys show in springfield mass this w/e. hope its a good turn out.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
Havent done any real work on the project lately. been busy with other projects. I have been brain storming the build, gathering parts, and working on my body cart. got the idea and dimensions from 2fast55. not done yet still need to fab uprights and caster mount plates. i bough some 10" rubber neumatic casters and made all the body mount plates. working in a machine shop makes fab work alot easier. I picked up a manual brake/ clutch assy from a board member and plan to put either a t56 or nv4500 behind the 400 smb i got from my dad. nothing worth pics, sorry guys. Ill post some up of the body cart soon before i put the blzr on it.
|
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
Oh, ment to ask if anyone with a standard blazer or truck could post some pics of the brake /clutch assy mounting and how the rods go i'd appreciate it. I think im going with a hydro clutch but not sure how the under dash assy mounts up.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
started on the body cart. here is a few pics of the base with the casters mounted. not much progress but its a start. just need the uprights and blzr can go on.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
If you get a chance if you could get some measurements, I'm wondering what you got from the top right hole of the power steering pump to the first bolt on the upper control arm shaft and what do you get from the same starting point to the top rear bolt on the motor mount pearch on top of the frame?
|
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
will get those when i get home tonight. and some pics for you also. i was at the nascar race yesterday so i didnt get a chance to take pics yet.
|
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
that would be great........just measure straight across from the top right power steering gearbox bolt to the front bolt that goes thru the upper control arm shaft and if you can do the same but go to the rear bolt on the motor mount perch and some pics would be great to. Thanks alot

Ok here is the measurements i got. 12 3/4" from top right p.s. bolt hole to front control arm mount bolt at base. 16" from same p.s. hole to back motor mount bolt. see picture with red lines. all measurements are center to center. *note that i drew the line to the end of the bolt but measured it to the base*.
also i took a measure ment from the rad suport mount center to the top left bolt that mounts the cross member to frame, 23 3/8". I have more pictures with the tape meaure in view if you want them. also of the rear air bag mount plate. if you want them i can post those tonight from home. this was all done to the frame before i got it. let me know if you need anything else. |
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
Thats great I cant thank you enough......I measured my 73-87 donor frame and my 70 c-10 frame and I got 12 7/8 or right in that area so 12 3/4 is good and I got right around 16" to the motor mount also. thank you again and sorry for highjacking your post I just really wanted someone who has what I am wanting to do to get the measurements for me so again thank you for the pics also. And as for the rear suspention I will make that all from scratch but if I happen to need anything I know where to go.......thanks again

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
so I have decided to just keep the stock suspension for now. sence all i need is hardware to bolt everything in. it will be faster and less expensive to get a roller and then a driver. I can spend the money on body work insted of a drop memeber. but the c4 suspension is still the end game.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
those pillars look like 73-87 ones, if they are I was wondering if the motor mount hole where lengthend on the pillar and it looks like they are not bolted in the factory spot on the crossmember.
|
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
yes oldschool the x member is from an 84. the mounts have been modified to fit on the 69 frame. i dont know if they are in stock location or not. the motor mounts look like they are sloted but not much. i bought the frame like it is, so i dont know much and havent taken it apart.
|
Re: 71 2wd conversion project
ok thanks......just wanted to know if they were slotted cause that was the way I was going to go and it looks like thats the way everyone is doing it.

Re: 71 2wd conversion project
so i got some work done on my body cart and now have the body bolted to it. I still need to finish welding the uprights in the front and add some to the middle so its supported in 6 spots. then add the reciever mounts and build extention arms so i can flip it on to its side. the floor is about 40 inches from the ground so its at a good height for body work. here is some pictures.
