Gas tanks?
Can someone share with me the options of bed tanks for efi motors? I'd like to keep fill neck in bed. Do I really have to spend $700 on a Boyd tank to accomplish this?

Re: Gas tanks?
I just picked up a 89 Jeep wrangler 2.5 liter 15 gallon tank from Advance auto parts. I got the idea from mrhino's build http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=427417&page=2
I have not installed it yet but here is what I think Pros: I like that the bumper almost completely hides it. Cheap paid about $100 for a brand new one. Appears to accept common GM sending unit/pumps with slight modification Internally baffled Cons: Filler tube is only 1 inch Only 15 gallons hope that helps Mike |

Re: Gas tanks?
1 sheet aluminum, 2 AN bungs, tank foam, ruler. Doesn't get a whole lot more bare bones than that. It has a sending unit as well, although its not hooked up. Holds about 15gallons, doesn't slosh, and its sumped to run an external FI pump without issue.

Re: Gas tanks?
Truck is 72 lwb , I would like to use as large of tank as I can get. I would like to fill tank from the bed, do not want to put side door or behind plate fill( hoping to install hitch there)

Re: Gas tanks?
CPP has a 22 gallon tank with a fill neck going through the bed floor(if that's what you mean) for $500. Not cheap but the fab work is great and it comes with the sender, neck, cap and fittings.

Re: Gas tanks?
I am doing an ls swap as well, and am considering the '87 fuel tank. Apart from the fuelpump and pickup, what is the difference between that my '84 tank? Can I simply stick the efi crap in my existing tank?

Re: Gas tanks?
i had bought a 99 Z28 tank for our swap but ended up buying a boyd tank instead of using it..

Re: Gas tanks?
Thanks. I will use an inline walboro external for now with the c5 reg mod until I can find a good 87 tank.
|
Re: Gas tanks?
So do you need a baffled tank to have the ls motors run properly? I was just going to run an aftermarket burb tank since i'm running a frame rail mounted pump.
|
Re: Gas tanks?
you dont have to run a baffled tank, but it is better if you do....it keeps fuel starvation to a minimum, when the fuel level is low, and you're on the throttle....I have a normal blazer tank, and I have to keep the fuel tank level above 1/8 if I'm gonna be foolin around....lookin back I wish I woud've bought the 87 blazer tank...

Re: Gas tanks?
Does it matter what tank? My truck only has one on the passenger side. Only reason I was going to use the inline and C5 reg is because I have them left over from another project.
|
Re: Gas tanks?
If you have an unbaffled tank, get tank foam, it will aid in sloshing and help concentrate fuel around a sump (if you have a sumped tank). Either way it will help the slosh, as a fix.

Re: Gas tanks?
Forgive my ignorance but what is tank foam?

Re: Gas tanks?
Forgive my ignorance as well please.
If I use one of these what else would I need to complete it for LS efi motor? http://www.summitracing.com/search/Y...yword=gas+tank |

Re: Gas tanks?
Tank Foam I believe is a way of baffling the fuel it is like a chunk of sea coral.

I didn't use this stuff in particular, but its a nice explanation. (I think the link is a mx racing company or something, just use it for the info) |
Re: Gas tanks?
I used a 87 blazer tank in my blazer. I had to move the rear crossmember back a few inches. 87 sender with EP381 and stock filler.
I used a 89 Jeep tank in my C-10 long bed because I didn't want to move the crossmember. With this, I used a 87 sender with EP381. The Jeep tank fit pretty good...I added a small crossmember below the bed to have something the front end of the tank to rest on. The only issue is the filler size, 1". I'm running an in bed filler from the same jeep. The tank is barely visable below the rear sport bumper and otherwise would not be an issue if the truck were lowered. |

Good info, Creek. Do you have pics or a link to build threads?

Well, I don't know that anything I've got is anything new or isn't already on this site but here's a few pics. In fact, I think I got the wrangler tank idea from Mr. Rhino's thread. However, iirc, he cut his cross sill to fit the tank up against the bottom of the bed. I set mine on the cross sill and added an extra piece of the sill to balance it out.
The blazer has a 4" spring lift and H052 axle. The rear cross member was moved all the way back to the end of the frame. '87 blazer tank and sender with ep381. Blazer first: |

C-10 LWB with '89 Wrangler tank (15gal), '87 blazer sender, '87 blazer tank straps cut down and rewelded. '89 Wrangler filler and hoses from McMaster Carr. The filler will probably be finished with a '72 blazer hose cover or something similar.
The cross members are in the stock position with an added section of a bed cross sill to balance out the tank. I think the tank will fit a SWB but you may have to fit it around the cross sill...I haven't really looked at it that close, yet. Stock height/original springs (I think). |

Fuel filler cover...copied off of my blazer and cut to fit the wrangler filler. Again, this filler was used since it has 1" fill hose and 3/4"(or 11/16"?) vent tube that matches the 15 gal '89/'90 tank.
I made a pattern of the blazer cover and used it to cut out the cover from 22g sheet metal.\ I filled it up today and it worked great! Plus, if I pull in real close to the pump I can pull up on either side of the truck...i.e. less waiting in line!!! |
Re: Gas tanks?
Here is what i have been looking at, Fully baffled, reasonably priced for coming with sending unit and all necessities.

Re: Gas tanks?
Looks like a Boyd's Welding tank. Paid about $150 less for mine during a group buy.

Re: Gas tanks?
Now how about mounting a tow hitch with a rear tank? Looks like the blazer tank is a great candidate...but I am working on a Longhorn. Thanks
