why 73-87?
Why do you guys prefer the 73-87 trucks over 67-72 trucks? Is there any specific reason or is it just because.....?
I have a 82 but am thinking about getting a older one any thoughts either way? |
I personally like the look of the 73-79. But I REALLY like the look of a 72 SWB Fleetside too. :D
|
Certainly the 73-87 trucks are more car-like. And it's easier to find car-like features such as cruise control, power windows, etc. And, if you're a fan of GM electronics (which I'm not), 73-87 are the only years to get GM Fuel Injection.
For me the biggest drawback to them (except for the fact that they steer like aircraft carriers) is that there are so many newer ones still on the road, that my '75 I just restored is nothing more than "an old truck." Maybe in another 10 years they'll reach collectors status. Brian |
i was more or less forced to get it when i turned 16. really wanted a old jeep. it has been a good truck. and as of right now a Jeep is the only thing i would give it up for.
|
Don't get me wrong I do really like my truck, but there is something about those older ones.... wish I could have BOTH!

If I could I would have both my '74 and a '69-'72 style truck.
I would say for me personally I prefer the 73-87 style because of nostalgic reasons. When I was growing up my grandfather had a '75 Stepside, and I loved that truck. Even when I was like 8 years old I hoped he would have passed his truck on to me... Unfortunately he gave the truck to my aunt, who in turn blew the engine and sold the truck afterwards. I wish I could find his original truck somehow and restore it, now that would be a great story. Big Moe |
I like the look and you rarely...until recently see many in good shape. :)
|
I was kinda forced into mine too. When I was 17, I was looking for either a '56 F100 or 72 SWB Cheyenne, but my dad found this and bought it (with my money) without my consent. I was not my favorite, but it has done me well since '97. :D
I have been thinking about getting a 50-53 :bowtie: right now. |
I like the body lines on them. More specifically on the 73-80's closely followed by the 81-87's.
|
its not that i prefer 73-87s to 67-72 cause i love all old trucks. Its just that i happen to own a couple of the 73-87s now as soon as i can ill be buying an older one tho anything to piss off the neighbors
|
Personally, I like the look of 73-87's better than 67-72's. I prefer the look of the 81-87's better myself, but any 73-87 bodystyle suits me.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn down a nice 67-72, but they are hard to find in decent shape. |
Me too i like the look more than the 67-72. my dad owned a 72 that i helped him put a 400sbc in i liked it but not as much as his 73 4x4 i just like the shape. if i was to get a older truck than the one i have now it would be 63 we had one at one time years ago.

If you understand it, It's a great system IMO it's better than any quadraboog carb out there or any carb for that matter. And i like the 67-72 years as well and would love to own one sometime and it would have some form of feul injection on it too. But as allready stated there hard to find in good condition unless you got 40 grand to lay down. |
I think both generations are great....Specifically Blazers. I love the convertible aspect. The 67-72's look cool as heck and are quite a conversation piece. But let's face it, the 73-75's ride better, are quieter inside, and are more comfortable.
I plan on having one of each...the 1st gen. for show and the 2nd gen. for daily driver. imho Davy |
Because mine was free!!!!! It's nice and wide. Try to get the same amount of room out a new model. I don't think so.
|
Used to be that 73-87's were the only stepsides I liked. Then I read a article about a 400hp 383, and in my extremely retarded state [I didnt even know what a torque wrench was yet] thought ALL 383's had 400hp. So when I was looking for a truck I found a 78 stepside with a 383. It was all over after that :D
Now I cant stand anything else except 98-02 accord v6's. ;) |
I had a 72 3/4 ton long bed and I hated it. We sold it back to the guy because it wouldn't work. I like the looks of the 73-87 better than the 67-72. When it comes to driveability I like either one as long as its a shortbed. I can't stand to drive longbeds. What made me take the 84 was mostly the fact that I like the looks better and I couldn't get anything newer than my dad's truck and his is an 88. I also had a budget of $2500 max. I like all the features that my 84 has over the 72.

what i like
Well my 79 isn't here still.
The reason why I like the 73-87's better is because I think they look better when raised as a 4x4 than a raised 4x4 67-72. I wanted a 4x4, so this is what I'm getting. However, if it was a 2wd, I'd like to have a 67-72. I am growing more to the liking of that style... (especially after I see my cousin's 69 c10 custom camper special). That truck is a cherry. The way I look at it, it's a WIN-WIN situation either way! :D :burnout: -Chris |
there are great things about both. i like the roomier cab of the 73-87's and the body style looks better imo. i would love to have one of each...and maybe i will some day...but 73-87s are much cheaper and easier due to the abundance of parts.

My dad gave me the 74 back in 84. It had been given up for dead. Most of my experience and goof ups have been courtesy of this truck. I have grown to love them since that is what I had. I am glad to see so many cool ones now. Used to be I never saw one that was done the way I liked.
67-72's have such cool lines. I love those rounded wheels stuffed with a big wheel. So I have both. |
I think you should have at least one of each. My 70 C-10 came first, 5 years ago and I added the 81 K5 last fall. Both are easy to work on and no electronic crap to diagnose.
|
well i had just bought a 70 chevelle and was looking for a 68-72ish truck but i found my 83 just down the street from me for cheap so i just bought it. i sorta felt buyers remorse afterward b/c i really wanted an older truck but the damn thing kept growin on me...whenever i think of selling it for an older on i keep deciding not to b/c i like it so much.
|
I bought my 78 4x4 for $1000. At first I thought I wanted to change out he front clip for the 81 and newer sheetmetal but I've grown to like the brick like, square front end and now I prefer the 73 - 80? front end over all else.

I had another buddy of mine convince me, if I were going to find a one owner, rust free, un-cut Blazer, I should look at the 73-82 models. He was right. I found my 82 Blazer, and have been in lust every since. I agree with Chris about the difference in rounded lines (73-80) vs. square sides (81-87). As much as I like my square side Blazer, the rounded line trucks have much more appeal to me. Those big round head lights (o) (o) are sooooo sexy...:D |

What lowering job??? Oh yea . . .... I knew there was something I was supposed to be doing!
The only problem w/owning several trucks is there are more possibilities for failure & the beater lost the vacuum booster for the brakes. No brakes means no trailer, no trailer no alignment. I just talked w/the parts guy last night & he assured me the booster will be in on Friday (heard that one before). The drop is on for this weekend. I cut out the fact bumpstops last week & put the spare control arms together w/new bushings/b.joints & fixed the unbelievingly annoying rattles from the doors + mounted the small mirrors & I'm supposed to be able to pick up the rechromed factory 74 front/rear bumpers tonight!! Oh yea, I got some heads for it too . . ...... |

If I told you I would be severely chastised by Crash & Dr. Lynsky. I will say I got some for the same price as vortecs + related hardware.
Oh hell, who am I kidding, I'll be thoroughly chastised anyway for the length of time it's taken me to get the thing lowered. That's why I haven't seen them in a month . . .... I wonder if Keiths broken any bones lately? |
Who said I like one better then the other? I have owned both body styles.
My first GM was a 70 LeMans convertable that I still own. I had a little taste for off roading and had a Isuzu trooper. Sold it and bought a low rider Nissan. Got maried had kids, truck wasn't cutting it. Wanted to get back into wheeling. Two vehicles fit my needs of A/C, power windows, plenty of room for both passengers and gear. Blazers and Bronco's I knew enough about wheeling that I didn't want anything to do with anything resembling IFS so that Narrowed me down to two years of Bronco 78-79 and about 12 years of Blazer. I ended up with a 79 Blazer loaded with factory 3.73 gears. A year later I was pretty well given a 75 Jimmy that I ended up replacing the floors on and built into a real trail basher. We kept the 79 for 6 years and it became my wifes DD about 4 years abo after she and a Ford we had cound't see eye to eye. I sold it last month. We have 2 kids now and my wife was having troubles loading the baby and it was time for something with doors. She hated to put it up for sale but it wasn't working for her. I had bought a 70 Burb to restore for her but didn't have time to work on it and sold it. SHe is now driving a Honda Accord. Well in Feburary we inherited a Airstream camper. So we needed something to pull it. Needed 4 doors, needed plenty of motor, needed to be reliable from the day I bought it because it was going to be my DD. Needed creature comforts and A/C. Needed to be pre airbag (I hate them and my wife is 5ft and they tend to kill women that size). That put me in market for one vehicle. Suburban I wanted FI so that narrowed it down to 87-91. Needed to be heavy duty and a 10 bolt rear wasn't going to cut it so had to be 3/4 ton. Hmmmmmm 350 or 454....454! So I started asking questions and looking. Before I had even looked at the first one I got a PM on Airstreamforums.com about a local 88 454 burb with 71,000 original miles. I went and looked but didn't buy because I was waiting till one of the other vehicles we had for sale sold. Looked at avery 454 burb listed in the trader. None were near as clean as this one. Paid $5k for it and was driving it to work the next day. Now I would love to find a 71-72 2wd blazer to make a hot rod out of but just haven't had the right one show up yet. |
why?
if you have to ask... ...you wouldnt understand. -mike |
Bought my 1979 C10 LWB for a 500 $ , with GPL on board , while the cost of installing a GPL kit in my Impala would have cost at least 1 Grand ...
I didn't hesitate to buy the truck , leaving the Impala running on gas , to be used to transport my girl friend & kids in the local area. But this 1979 C10 wasn't my ultimate dream , as I would love to own a "Rhino nosed" full size Jeep ( Wagoneer , delivery van , pick-up truck , whatever...) You cannot find one here in Europe under 6 K's , that's too much money for me right now , but I will own one once in my life , I know it Yeah , you all may shoot me down:barf: About 67-72 vs. 73-87 , give me a 73-81 , for sure ... About older GM trucks , I really love the 1951 five windows pick-up The Baron ____________________________________________________ 1979 C10 LWB 1977 Chevy Impala sedan , 250ci , "Ye Old Reliable" 1960 Girl Friend , frame still good , body has some dents |
Chev must like the old style as well as the new ones look close to the 67-72.
The 73 and up are alot cheaper to get used or aftermarket parts for. |
