Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
Do you want any wheels that are steel or are you looking for the stock style that takes the small hubcaps. Cause when these posts come up you are going to get every wheel thats made of steel =)

Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
I did notice that CG ... and I was looking to see the 'original factory' steelies with and without hubcaps. I am considering switching my black steel wheels for white ones, and wanted to see different trucks and color combinations.
IT's all good though ... but lets see those factory steels too. Thanks. |

NICE!!!
White seems to out number other colors by 2 to 1. It looks good with and without hubcaps too. |

Kelsey Hayes 16.5 x 9.75 powder coated with 33" tires I have an original set of hubcaps, but I think it looks better without them Miles |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
That's one sharp lookin truck 72Cheyenne! Whats the lift on your truck ... about 3"?

No lift. Just stock HD replacement front springs. The original springs were sagging pretty bad. Rear is all all original. Miles |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
Really ... Wow!
I have LT285/75 R16's on my truck and I have been wondering how low I can go without rubbing. With 48 lbs of air they measure 31.75 inches tall on the truck. Not trying to deviate from the Thread ... was just curious. Thanks. |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
I agree that is one good lookin truck you got there 72Cheyenne454.

They are blacked to match the OE lock ring wheels that came on the Suburban in 1968. |

Here's my 72, got a 350 Goodwrench crate motor, a new bed floor, picked up 410 frt and rear ends (it has a 69 frame with drums up front now), going to disc's up front and 14 bolt rear, lots of work but I now have most of the parts I need to get it back together.
Those are 35's with a 4" lift and some not so correct dog dish caps |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
Not too pretty but here is my 70 K5 with the rims and tires that were on my 69 K20 when I bought it.

Dig the 8 lug and lock ring set up on a K5, not something you see everyday that's for sure. |

Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
Those are old General Grabbers that aren't available anymore to my knowledge. They are on 16" split rims and if memory is right are like 7.50 wide and maybe 31" tall. Surprisingly the tires are in great shape. I think they were purchased right before the prior owner put my 69 K20 in storage and since I bought truck the K20 and now the K5 have been garaged which has kept the sun off of them except when I'm out driving.

It is a real pain trying to find anything for them locally though, every junk yard I've been to looking hasn't seen a 67-72 truck in 10-15 years. Thank god for this site! TTT for some more steel wheeled 4x4s! |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
I just wanted to chime in here and thank all of you folks that have contributed to this Thread so far .... I think what we are seeing here is the true core unique'ness of the 67-72 style and character that GM brought to us back in 'the day'. Proving that even with 'plain jane' steel wheels on 'em ... these trucks hold their own to any truck that has come down the pike since then.
The 'cool factor' that our trucks still hold ... 40 some years later, can't be denied. Thanks again ... and keep those pics and comments coming. 72longbed |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
Thanks for the trip down memory lane:
Back in the day. Having pulled, tugged, dug, winched, yanked, jacked, and pushed a few of these vehicles out various situations I had more than one opportunity to see these babies “up close and personal”. I have forgotten how beautiful these vintage vehicles are with the steel wheels of that era. |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
A few that I have saved from around the site:
This was Special-K's truck i think, hope he doesn't mind http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ucks/002_2.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../71DkOlive.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ucks/72GMC.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ucks/71K20.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ks/Fremont.jpg EDIT: Whoops... A 2WD slipped in there by accident. Oh well! |
Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
I loved that color of green (Emerald?) I had an uncle and two friends that purchased new trucks during that era, they were beautiful inside and out.
If I remember correctly, my uncle’s had a bunch of inlaid scrolling somewhere on the interior trim. |

Re: Steel Wheeled 4x4's??
In my opinion, dark green and white is hands down the best color combination on these trucks. Just beautiful! It's the scheme i will paint mine.... eventually
