Fade to Black 71
So after spending time in the 47-59 forum we have moved over here. We decided to sell our 1948 Chevy 5-window after spending the last 10 years working on it off and on. The project itself was going to be awesome, if we could have ever got it finished. We decided it was going to take too much time and even more money the way we wanted it finished. So we decided to part ways. The frame sitting under the 48 was a 70 C10 that we have already had lowered using a ECE 4/6 drop kit, a CCP aluminum gas tank and a set of custom made trailing arms. We wanted to keep the frame and find a truck that we could set right on it and start burning some tires. We found a 71 swb that's in great shape, and we all know once we start taking things apart we all know how that goes. The plans as of now, getting the rust fixed in the normal spots, body work done and some wheels and tires. Enough of all the talk, here are the pictures of truck the day we bought it.

Re: Fade to Black 71
Not a ton of progress here lately, a few updates however I won't be able to post pictures until this evening. We finally got our cab rack cut down and the cab up on that so it's easier to work on. We can now see the rust under the cab and what all needs to be taken care of. I've got a few questions about a couple different areas dealing with heating, paint and headers. First question is, since we are not going back with AC in the truck, how do you run a defroster system? Is that something we mount under the dash etc...? The second is we are looking for an under the hood black, we don't want shiny so we are looking for a good durable satin finish black. Just curious what everyone's thoughts where on the paint and primer they had the best results with. And last but not least we are looking for a good set of shorty headers, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks again for all the help, I hope to get some pictures up tonight of the work my dad has done since our last post.

Re: Fade to Black 71
Here are a few pictures of the progress. We had to cut our body mounts off since they had been modified for our 48 cab so these are the ones we cut off the 71 frame, they cleaned up real nice. Got the cab on the stand and the doors off, as well as exposing rust underneath, time to get busy and get all of this knocked out.

Re: Fade to Black 71
Well my dad has made some progress, not much or anything big but at least it's in the right direction. After doing a bunch of research online we figured out what we are going to use for under the hood black. John Deere Blitz black, and according to my dad he says it's some of the best paint he has used out of a spray can, sprays nice and lays out nice. So he is impressed and it has the look we were after. We also got a few small parts blasted primed and painted, as well as the glass out of the cab. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Nice products. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v.../71pics006.jpg |
Re: Fade to Black 71
Subscribed! Good luck with the cancer repair! That's where I'm at too, it's by far my least favorite part of any build.

WOW! Now I know what my truck will look like as a SWB if I ever decide to go that route. Looks like a smaller younger twin of mine.

Re: Fade to Black 71
Ok well not a ton of work done lately, but the old man is slowly starting to get all the parts blasted, primed and painted. He then is wrapping all of them in saran wrap for storage until he is ready for them. He also started working on the core support, cleaning it up. But, he decided to have it blasted instead of wiring brushing all of it. He hopes to pick it up tomorrow and have it primed and painted ASAP. The best part of the post is of course getting in new shiny parts. He ordered an aluminum radiator race kit from Summit Racing. Everything looks great and can't wait to get things mocked into place to see how they fit.

Just waiting to receive some pictures from my old man and then I can get them posted. |
Re: Fade to Black 71
So a few other things we are dealing with are getting the seat picked out as well as figuring out what wheels we want to use? I've noticed a few guys running some late model Silverado seats and I was just curious what the best year is for running in these trucks. We are looking for a set of bucket seats because we'd like to build some kind of a center console in order to integrate a Moroso rocker switch panel in. The next thing is dealing with the wheels, my dad really likes the Boss 338's in black and the ones I'm leaning towards are the American Racing Wheels VN805 BLVD's. We are looking for a nice set of black wheels, like I said in an earlier post we plan on blacking out the majority of this truck. So we are open for suggestions on wheels as well. So all thoughts and opinions are welcomed because I know there are a lot of you out there that have been in this situation. Thanks for everyone's help.
Here are the wheels, I know everyone probably knows about the 338's but the American racing wheels aren't as popular on these trucks. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...inishBlack.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v.../VN805blvd.jpg |
Re: Fade to Black 71
So we were able to pick up the core support from the blasters last night, everything looks great with it so dad cleaned it up a little bit and started spraying some primer on it. Hopefully by Friday it will be painted, stored, and ready for install when the time comes. Also as promised- the fenders that we had patch panels installed. Our body guy we are using does amazing work, and the kicker is he's 70 years young!! So just another step closer to getting this thing buttoned up.

Re: Fade to Black 71
So the old man was able to get more work done on the core support today, as well as working on the front bumper and taking the hood to the painter for some prep work. Here are a few pics of the hood to begin with.
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support020.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support018.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support017.jpg When he started the front bumper he said it was going pretty easy with the DA sander, and after about 15 minutes with that he said he got into some extremely hard paint. So he went and bought some paint stripper and went that route. Said it was still a royal PITA so he left the rest for the painter to finish. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support001.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support016.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support013.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support014.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support015.jpg The core support came out looking real nice, he is very pleased with the results. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support023.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support025.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support026.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...support027.jpg |

Re: Fade to Black 71
Had some time this weekend and got a little done. Luckily, the old man has tomorrow off as well so he plans on getting more done. We picked up a set of Patriot shorty headers that I think will work well. Dad didn't like the paint on them so he blasted them and put some high temp paint on them until we can send them off to be ceramic coated.
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS001.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS005.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS005.jpg He also yanked the motor out so he could prep the frame and all the front end components for some rust encapsulator then some chassis black. With the motor out we will try and get all the brake lines run before we stab it back in. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS006.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS012.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS009.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS008.jpg He also did a little fix on the core support brackets that were a little mangled. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS015.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS016.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...ROGRESS018.jpg |

Theres nothing wrong with that support for the rad. It is better than the orignal one.

Re: Fade to Black 71
Made a little more progress today, got one of the sides torn down up front so we started doing a little rust removal. The old man didn't feel like doing any blasting, grinding or wire brushing so he went with the muriatic acid approach. All in all everything turned out rather nicely at a fraction of the time it would have taken with the other methods.
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress004.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress009.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress008.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress007.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress006.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress005.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress010.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress011.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress013.jpg Once he had everything cleaned up he sprayed them with a little rust encapsulator to keep them from rusting once again. We plan on painting the calipers with some gun metal gray caliper paint but if we can't find any in that color we will stick to black. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress016.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress018.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress019.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress020.jpg He also welded on the new filler piece for the other core support bracket. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress002.jpg http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/v...rogress001.jpg He is slowly making progress, as long as he keeps trucking along he will have the frame buttoned up in no time. |
Re: Fade to Black 71
More progress up front. Almost to the point where we can start spraying some extreme chassis black, right now everything is just rust encapsulated.
