quest for silence
3 Attachment(s)
after shouting at my wife in our crewcab for years, i finally decided to see if i could make it more livable. a big part of the problem- headers with 3" pipes & flowmasters, 38.5 swamps, & custom deluxe trim, a piece of jute & rubber floormat & nothing else.

now i'm laying in some closed cell foam. glued this to the fatmat with 3m spray adhesive
Attachment 1037387 Attachment 1037390 now the real big part of noise reduction- mass loaded vinyl, & yes it's heavy, just over a pound per sq. ft & i have 100sqf. i also glued it down & taped the seams. this stuff is heavy, but suprisingly flexible |
Re: quest for silence
yeah bnoon, should have left the drivers seat in untill i got it in the shop.
keep reading comegetsome, my computer skills suck ( 1 finger typer), so i'm a little slow |
Re: quest for silence

what i thought would be the easiest part turned into the hardest. because we use our crew to haul our camper & quads, carpet was out of the question, so i picked up a new vinyl mat from ACC. it's 2 1/2 times as thick as the stock rubber, awesome quality, but laying it down in the winter (even with a propane shop heater) is a chore it's so stiff. i spent a week with a commercial heat gun getting it to lay reasonably flat.
Attachment 1037405 Attachment 1037409 time to put the interior back together. it is green & tan, but i'm going to go tan & black as i can afford it.seats going back in Attachment 1037413 Attachment 1037414 Attachment 1037415 |
Re: quest for silence
Looks great, I'm curious about the results. Where did you get the closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl?

a couple of posts back i screwed up. i meant to say i want to change my interior to GREEN & black, not tan & black. that being said, i tried my hand at painting plastic for the first time. my console used to be tan, now it's
Attachment 1037453 Attachment 1037454 Attachment 1037455 in my never ending quest for quietness, i lined the cup holders & inside with rubber to keep our pop & keys & stuff from rattling.also for the sake of quiet, i put a cig. lighter outlet in it so the kid can plug his video games in (works better then duct tape!). if i can scrape up some money for armrests, i think i'll paint the door panels to |
Re: quest for silence
What seats are those in the rear? That's exactly what I've been looking for. And custom brakets or are they stock from something? Thanks!

Don't sweat it. There is another guy in this very forum with King Ranch seats in his truck, can't remember who. They look great though.

Re: quest for silence
You guys just made my day... My kids are just about big enough to get out of their booster seats and I've been plotting on how I'd make myself some rear headrests to protect them in the event I got hit in the back. That seat is perfect. Thanks and keep up the great looking work!

Re: quest for silence
Nice job! I sound deadened my Silverado SS with MLV on the floors too, but the biggest improvements by far came from doing the cab's back wall and roof with the Dynamat. Before I learned about MLV I used lead sheet that's usually used to line hospital walls in their x-ray rooms. Same idea as MLV, maybe just a bit heavier, but quite a bit harder to get to lay flat.

Re: quest for silence
sounds like it will be quiet for sure, nice!

some updates
prev. owner installed different mirrors. somehow he could not utilize any of the existing 6 holes(sigh, bang head). the top 2 holes he drilled were fine as they went threw the mirror brace, the 3rd one on the bottom was unsupported & the metal was ripped an inch on each side of the hole. welded up & bondo'ed the holes & tears, also put a 8" long piece of flatbar on the insides of the ripped holes to support the mirrors better, especially with my camper clip-ons Attachment 1074223 sound deadner & mlv installed in doors Attachment 1074224 rear pass. door had serious dent in it with poor body work, outer skin was coming off the door, found a rust free '77 sub door. had to slightly bend rod to fit the inside handle from my '85, also, sadly had to cut speaker hole in virgin metal so it would match the other p.o. installed door speakers(siiiigh!!) also fixed & added a few things. bought a receiver tube, welded some plate on it & mounted it on the front.will be used to haul our bicycles when camping. with literally 1 inch of clearance on each side, i can now drive the quad trailer into the garage instead of backing in as well
Attachment 1074244 Attachment 1074245 got rid of old weird camper plug & added modern 7 pin Attachment 1074247 fuel gauge took a crap & went to 3:00 last fall Attachment 1074259 looking better now. sender wire got sliced by a clamp Attachment 1074261 |
Re: quest for silence
Have you tried lining the inside of the doors with sound deadner? Them things beat like a drum with sound and road noise. Prob the worst other than the back of the cab and the floor.

Re: quest for silence
yeah i did, the whole inside of the doors are deadened plus mlv on top of it. when you tap the doors now, it's a SOLID thunk. cant wait to hear how my stereo sounds. just ditched the brake load sensing stuff, re-plumbed the lines, need to bleed them, also cant put my driver's side doors on till i get it out of the shop. my dd insur. is due this tuesday as well, so i'm hoping to have it on the road in a couple weeks. then see if all this pays off

Re: quest for silence
One last thing to consider for sound deadening. Lizardskin, think about it.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/liz-50115/overview/ LizardSkin Sound Control Formula is a high tech coating that stops the vibration of sound waves coming from a surface before they enter the air. LizardSkin Sound Control can be used with LizardSkin ceramic insulation, when used together LizardSkin Sound Control must be applied first. Now you can achieve the maximum in sound and noise reduction greatly enhancing your audio system. Typical applications include firewalls, floor pans, transmission tunnels, doors, hoods, trunk lids, under headliners, inside fenders, panel van walls and other areas that generate vibration and noise. For maximum acoustic performance, coat entire interior surface and the floor inside and out. LizardSkin is completely water soluble, meaning easy clean-up with just soap and water. Each 2-gallon container covers 46-50 square feet with .025-.040 in. thickness. http://www.lizardskin.com/ |

doubt this will help quietness, but oh well. 28 yr old rubber b.mounts were not looking good(as well as some cab lean). hardware cleaned up nice with some new gr.8 bolts.
Attachment 1074267 Attachment 1074268 Attachment 1074269 also ditched this mess(brake load sensor), re-run new lines Attachment 1074270 Attachment 1074271 |
