Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
If the wife only knew how much money I drop on this truck she would $hit a brick. Just ordered the extreme drop front member, ther control arms, and a complete drop kit for the rear. Not sure how I'm going to pull this one off lol.
Anyone else going to find their way into the dog house? |

Sounds like a great response. I am very fortunate to have a wife who encourages me to spend and get what I need. |
Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
The only money I put into my truck is what I make from buying and selling or side jobs so the wife doesn't care. Although she would rather have a hot tub I would rather have new bumpers.

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
"She Money" - What She don't know won't hurt her!
I don't hide money, it's a marriage...trust...respect all that but if I have cash I don't answer questions about where it goes, mostly because it's assumed that it would be truck parts. My wife does razz me all the time because I do things like wear holes through the soles of my shoes because I'd rather have parts. She says my trucks are dressed better because I have my priorities backwards! It's about compromise. Regular trips to get her hair, nails, and a housekeeper 2x per month gets alot of mileage. |
Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
Oh yea from the wife for sure.. I call it "maintenance" items it needs from time to time.. She buys that. I hope!

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
My wife is completely onboard with what I spend on my truck and her Chevelle or the other toys .She is the one that suggested for me to buy a tilt column for my truck and then asked what else I wanted for it .My wife is all about car and truck toys though ,she loves them as much as I do if not more .

I'm a fan of the "traded for it"response as well. I don't tell her unless she asks which is pretty much never!

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
My wife is an accountant, there is NO hiding money stuff from her. I don't need to really, though, she's on board with my hobby and figures the alternatives could be worse. :tim::alky::ele::barn:

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
My first truck was a 65' Chevy Truck when I was 18 yo and I'd always dreamed of building another...I loved that truck! The woman I was married to for 20 years wouldn't allow me to spend money on toys. Once I brought home a 66' with the dreams of my 65'. I was so excited! She made me part with it after 2 months of nagging and griping. So I sold it and a few months later, I got rid of the wifey, got me 65' and an awesome girlfriend who is supportive and involved in every aspect of my build. Life is great!

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
What Truck?? That old thing, I'm gonna get it running one of these days. In the meantime I accumulate parts. Good thing is she doesn't answer the door for the ups guy. He just leaves them on the steps and they never make it into the house.

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I buy my lady everything she wants! So when it comes time for a thousand dollar order for any of my cars and she wants to say something, all I have to ask her is where she got that Jimmy Choo bag...

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I don't hide anything, I actually have a detailed list of costs thats she's seen. She's also a banker so she can get her eyes on my accounts lol.
But car or not....always keep some cash your old lady doesn't know about....thats just man code. |
Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I'm one of those lucky guys with a supportive wife. Everything I spend on the truck is to improve gas mileage. Her only issue is why it doesn't get 300 miles per gallon with all the money I've spent on it!
Her only priority is to spend money on the stuff I really want the first time, so I don't have to waste money doing it over later. |
Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I don't. She is supportive to an extent. I would not want her hiding things from me. It could mess up the really important things in life. I like my truck but I love my wife. If I lost her, the truck wouldn't be important at all.

My truck is my girlfriend. She encourages me spending money on her.

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I was married for 21 years and my wife ( ex now) would go off every time I bought something for my truck, like starter, carb, tires etc. she always had a new car to drive and at the time I had my truck kinda where i wanted it, she complained anyway. she would always call my truck the money pit ( if she only knew how little it cost me to keep it running and driving). since then I have done tons more to it, Lsx motor, 4 speed auto, new rear end, rebuild front suspension, rebuilt rear suspension, seats.......

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
i have found that involving my wife in the projects works for us. she helps out on mine some and i'm building a car for her, no wait two cars for her, plus maintain the daily drivers and do all the yard work and house repairs. oh yeah, she also wants a truck now... so, who has the time or money to hide?
did i say this works... |

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
We've solved these issues with three bank accounts:
one for the wife one for me one for both. Both transfer an x sum of money on the shared account each month. Both equally much. Independent of actual income. Groceries, rent, non-personal insurances and all other shared expences are paid from that account. With the rest on our own accounts we do what we want. Period. On the first date I told her there are two things my wife must live with: a) cars/trucks/motorbikes will always be one major part of my life b) a postnuptial agreement Now we're married and happier than ever. |

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
I used to hide it all the time. Then one day I just started telling her about it and she was like "ok". I was like really, its that easy? 700r4 conversion and she was like "if that's what you want baby, just remember you are taking us on vacation in a few months" ;)

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
my wife dont care aslong as its the overtime money i use im lucky to have a good job building kenworth trucks which allows me to put a set amount in the bank for bills every paycheck and everything over that amount goes in savings which is my truck fund so the more overtime i work the more i get to spend lol
sometimes it is a double edge sword though i work so much overtime that im just to tired to work on truck so i have to keep it balanced |
Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
Im lucky on this one....my girlfriend doesn't care what i do or spend....as long as she gets her birthday, holiday and anniversary gifts on time.

I hate to think what she wastes on junk for the kids-the boy spends a fortune on crap at school every day. Two dollar beef jerkys/cokes etc at the "bookstore". When I was a kid the bookstore only had pencils and stuff. |

Re: Do you hide how much your spend on your truck?
Yes I have for the most part.
Sadly I always have. I'm sure the intention of the OP was not to bring anyone down with our version of the blues, but I won't lie to you about this one just in case it helps someone else identify an issue before it becomes a crisis. In more than one way I've not managed very well over the years and I'm 50 now... in that same time frame I was "obsessed" with old cars and trucks and especially the 60-66 C10s. I'm not an especially talented or resourceful builder with little money to spare, but I always had the passion to do it even when the means weren't there. My problem was restraint and balance vs. passion and self-desires. On the flipside I have been blessed to share the last 24 years with the finest woman I've ever known and thankfully there is forgiveness. I look forward to the balance of my life with a somewhat sharper focus and hopefully more success at something I love to do as well as share with others. Probably not the answer you expected but at least it's an honest one. Enjoy the journey... rg |
