Cruise control wire ID help needed

1 Attachment(s)
Anyone know where this wire might go? (1970 stock cruise control) I looked on the papers mailed to me, and the stuff scanned and e-mailed to me and have not seen anything on it.
I see no place on the speed sensor there, and there is nothing close to it to hook onto...

ginter 06-23-2003 09:56 AM

I'll have a look at mine tonight after work. I can shoot pics also. I can't gaurantee that it will be correct since mine is non-funtional at the moment, but it might give you a clue.

One of these days I'd like to get mine working again. I'd love to see the info you have on the CC.

ginter 06-23-2003 01:13 PM

I went out and had a look. I don't have that brown wire at all. Just the 2 lug connector that you see in your pic. I'll still shoot a pic after work and post it.

racedvl 06-23-2003 01:38 PM

Well, Andy, looks like your gonna have to trace it and see where she goes. . . .

Longhorn Man 06-23-2003 05:42 PM

Yikes, that sounds like "fun".
Maybe that's why his doesn't work?
One can hope, right?

ginter 06-23-2003 06:11 PM

Mine doesn't work because the PO decided to disconnect all kinds of stuff from it. The speedo cable, vacuum supply, hot wire for the switch in the cab... you get the idea. But I have NO loose brown wire anywhere. I'll get a pic in a bit.

BTW, where is you vacuum supply for the CC coming from? Manifold or carb fitting?

Longhorn Man 06-23-2003 06:30 PM

ginter... here you go.

Thanks. That helps a little. What exactly does the vaccum hose going into the cab connect to? Mine is just hanging loose under the dash.

Here's a pic of my control unit.

Like yours, mine only has two wires on the one and only connector to the control unit. There doesn't seem to be another connector anywhere on it. There are also only two wires and the vacuum hose going into the cab.

Close up of the control unit terminal and labeling.

I used to have. . . . . . . . :whine:

Longhorn Man 06-23-2003 11:53 PM

The hose going into the cab goes to the brake light switch I think.
I'll have to look tomorow.

ginter 06-24-2003 09:08 AM

Hmmmm.....

That makes sense, but my brake light switch doesn't have a fitting for a vacuum line. Probably switched out at some point by the PO. On the other hand, in that diagram you posted it looks as if the "Vacuum Release Valve" may be a seperate unit. I'd love to see a picture of the CC brake light switch and/or release valve if you can do that.

ginter 06-24-2003 09:16 AM

BTW longhornmail,

Does any if that info you have on the CC list the specific vacuum pressure required for the unit? I'll have to improvise a vacuum source since my manifold has been changed out.

Longhorn Man 06-24-2003 04:31 PM

I'll try to get a pic, and now that you mention it, i think it is in fact seperate. The CC brake light switch should have 2 places for electrical plugs, and then a seperate switch for the vacume.
Like I said, i'll try to get a pic here in a bit.
As for vac requirements...I'm not sure what it takes. There is probably a plug/bolt/allen bolt on your intake someplace that you can remove for this fitting. Every aftermarket one I have seen has holes to plug up.
Well, all the street ones anyways...but I don't think you have a tunnel ram with 2 4ppls on it. ;)

ginter 06-24-2003 04:45 PM

It's an Edelbrock somethingorotheralloyjobby. I haven't looked real hard yet, but I haven't seen a plugged hole in it anywhere. I assumed th PO pulled the CC when he installed the manifold. But what do I know.

Here is the best I could do. I've had this stupid digi-cam for a year now and still can't take very good pics with it.
Oh well. My head is pretty much on the gas pedal, and the drivers door is to the bottom of the pic....for oreantation.

Rod 06-24-2003 09:50 PM

ginter... what years your truck and does it list cruise as an option... I saw a cruise like that a week ago and passed on it.. thought the vacuum pod was a newer style...maybe I was wrong.

ginter 06-25-2003 01:02 PM

My truck is a 72 Cheyenne. IIRC, longhornmail and I discussed the cruise briefly shortly after I joined the board. I'm pretty sure this is a factory CC, but it has the under dash switch, so it may have been a dealer installed unit.

longhornmail - thanks for the pic. I'm going to look at mine again here in a bit. I think I'm missing that switch though.

I saw this thread and pics of what look like it may be part of the brake disengagement circuit?

Longhorn Man 06-25-2003 03:48 PM

That does kinda look like the switch on the pedal, but the rest of it doens't quite look right. But they did have a few styles on these so anything goes untill we can document EVERYTHING on the CC.

ginter 06-25-2003 04:24 PM

My brake pedal doesn't have the bracket yours does for the shutoff. It will take me awhile to get this one figured out.

Did you figure out what that extra wire is for yet?

Longhorn Man 06-25-2003 04:45 PM

nope. :(
Haven't really tried either.

DINS 1 06-25-2003 08:11 PM

the cruise on my 71 burb had a under dash switch and the cruise was listed in the glove box

ginter 06-25-2003 10:56 PM

For some reason, my glovebox sticker doesn't list the cruise. But it is a factory unit from all I can tell. That's why I suspect it was installed by a dealer.

I really wish my scanner worked on my computor!!!!!! Ive got all these diagrams and no way to send them to you......,IF ANYONE has a flatbed scanner, and a ORIGINAL,"1971 truck chassis service manual" go to Section 15,accesories,theres 6 pages of info & diagrams,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Longhorn Man 06-26-2003 03:11 PM

Jeff, I may have that info...I'll have to check my papers at the house. A member coppied a whole bunch of stuff and snail-mailed it all to me.
I need to put them up on a site to share...

ginter 06-26-2003 07:21 PM

longhornmail,

I'd love to see it if you can get it posted someplace.

jef5150,

Does it have to be an ORIGINAL factory manual? Do the repros not have this info?

mkmiller1 06-26-2003 11:24 PM

Thought I would post a pic of the CC(pieces) I pulled off a '69. It looks like longhornmails' with the extra plug. Plug in reads: Hold, Engage, Light
Let me know if you need a pic of the rest of the harness and I'll try to get a good one.
Matthew

mkmiller1 06-26-2003 11:25 PM

another pic

ginter 06-26-2003 11:38 PM

longhornmail,

Notice that one looks like it has a three wire connector where mine is only two. Perhaps yours was once a 3-prong?

mkmiller1,

That is a 3 wire connector isn't it? Kinda hard to tell from that pic, but it looks like it.

Longhorn Man 06-26-2003 11:43 PM

Interesting.....
Thanks.

Extra Wire

Since this is the same cruise master Unit that GM used on all vehicle until the 80's, could it be the conector in question is off of something like a Buick or Oldsmobile that has a light on the Instriment Cluster that is lit when the Cruise Control is engaged??:flag:

wHATANERD 06-27-2003 04:26 AM

Cruise

I recently add Cruise control to my 69, I pulled everything I needed of a late 70 Olds, for $25. I'll post some picture Tommorow, It look almost identical to a factory set up for these trucks, however The connector on the regulator also had the 3rd wire mention earlier in the post, which is not used. :flag:

jef5150 06-27-2003 05:24 AM

the manual was printed in 1970,....it shows a 2 wire connector , like you have, 1 white wire, 1 brown w/white stripe going to the regulator...thats it!!....then on the other side of the firewall you should have 1 brown wire,1 blue wire,1 black wire. These are connected to your " electric release & stop lamp switch", the same color wires are connected to the other side of this switch,& continue up your steering column to the control lever.......Directly above that electric brake switch on your brake pedal should be a "vacuum release switch"with 1 vaccum line connected to it.,,,,,,,,,,,is this any help??/

Longhorn Man 06-27-2003 11:46 AM

It helps...thanks.
