66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
Well here it is, my first build thread!
I found this one on c-list > in a field > loaded in the rain > couldn't have done it with out a tractor and an awesome farmer. I have yet to go through it but it looks to be a: - 1966 Chevy C10 - SWB - Custom cab trim - V8 (283 or 327) - Auto - Factory A/C - Small back window - Power steering It was parked 6 years ago. Was told that is was running fine when parked.... heard that before! A few pics to begin the documentation, here we go!!! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8...no/inField.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x...no/engPass.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...40-no/seat.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-m...8-no/front.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R...78-no/rear.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-y...-h478-no/2.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v.../onTrailer.JPG |

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
I finally moved the truck and trailer from the street in front of my house to the carport workspace. The natives were getting restless and I need to move the setup ASAP.
I knew getting this truck off the trailer was going to be a challenge but, did not realize it would be this bad. The passenger rear wheel/brake/something is locked up and will not move. I have beat, cussed, oil and tried to break it loose...nothing. I figured that the weight of the truck and gravitation pressure would break it loose when it hit the ramps, but NO! I put a wheel skate under that side and broke off one of the wheels within the first two feet. This is total redneck, but I fastened the rear to the dumpster I have in my driveway! I then dragged the trailer out from underneath it. You think nails on the chalkboard sounds bad! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4...-no/unload.JPG When the slope of my driveway ran out, I had to dig even deeper into my redneck bag of tricks. Just look here: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4...rednkpushr.JPG Finally in its styling chair. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...-no/inspot.JPG Bed wood out: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-C.../nobedwood.JPG Engine bay powerwashed, love that gold firewall! https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o...wshengnbay.JPG |

Looks good. Im also a local Nashvillian.
Make sure to treat that center AC vent with care. Seems to be a hard to find part. That and the under the dash ash tray. Just seen one of those AC vents go for $255 on ebay! |

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
I got a little more done on the C10.
engine block ID- 3834810- small block 283. I CLR'd the whole body with a green scotchbrite pad. I mixed about a 1/3 CLR with warm water and went to town. After the CLR bath, I topped the whole body with PB50. It is a surface protectant. It should keep the flash rust at bay. It gives the whole truck a cashmere, soft matte finish. Looks really cool. Also took 0000 steel wool to all of the trim pieces. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--...o/drivrBed.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V...no/passbed.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3...o/passDoor.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I...82-no/roof.JPG Now onto the drive train and brake systems. The engine has not been started for over 6 years. I was able to move the fan by hand and the engine turns over without the spark plugs in, which is a good sign. I have the carb soaking in a pine-sol solution and will pull it in a day, then clean it up. Next, is to drain and replace all the fluids, new plugs, wires, battery and see if it fires up! Until next time |
Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
Looks awesome brotha! can't wait to lay my eyes on it in person! Slow down so a bro can give you a hand.

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
Nice find...can't wait to see what you do with this one! Never heard of the PB50 trick before...I like the finish it leaves. That truck cleaned up real nice already.

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
on the carb cleaning , I read something the other day about soaking old carbs and even boiling them whole in a lemon juice / water mix to clean them up in cheap environmentally friendly way. :mm:
I have not tried it yet. Have not heard of the pine sol trick |
Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
Well, it seems this will be a thread I visit often.
Love your bag of tricks too. |
Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
Love the Patina and the color. I am hoping it fires right up for you. Have faith mine sat for 10 years. Did everything your about to do and it fired right up.
I even soaked my carb in Pine sol. It worked great except it took the anodizing off of my linkage oh well. I didn't have a choice. Here is what mine looked like http://images60.fotki.com/v661/photo...SCN5924-vi.jpg And after the rebuild. http://images14.fotki.com/v1625/phot...SCN5940-vi.jpg Bret |
Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
I love this truck!
The color and the patina are absolutely perfect. Now that the body is "done", it's time to get cracking on the motor and suspension! |

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
I had a little time today to get crackin' on the truck. Today's goal: all old fluids out. Thoughts:
- should gas look like ATF fluid? - I have never seen oil that black - put on some frickin' rubber gloves My plan was to drain the gas from the tank and install a 1/4 ball cock valve with two short rubber lines. I did this on my GMC and it works awesome. It is a very simple install. This: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-b...fuelcutoff.JPG Goes right here: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-A...tofuelline.JPG I pulled the sending unit and whoa baby! it was filthy with a tar black sooty coating. That was foreshadowing for the condition of the interior of the tank. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...endingunit.JPG The tank must come out! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...no/tankout.JPG Next, I poured out the most pungent smelling gas my schnoz has ever smelt. It was the color of burnt ATF fluid. Oh yeah, for some reason I never put on rubber gloves and now I have to go meet my wife and kids at a B-day party smellin' like funk. |
Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
A fan-freakin-tastic update:
It's ALIVE! After 7 years of sleeping, the 283 has woken up. Good buddy, neighbor, and board member (K5Addiction) came over to give me a hand. We cranked and cranked with nothing but white smoke occasionally puffing out the carb. When I bought it, the PO said it ran fine when he parked it 7 yrs. I assumed (mistake) that I the timing was fine. Wrong, it was exactly 180 degree's out. After determining TDC and re-stabbing the distributor, it fired right up. I was so geeked, I did a few pull-ups on the carport, in celebratory fashion! Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7_APEACesM The exhaust is one full length tube with a OLD glasspack and the other tube cut off right in front of the rear axle. More updates to come Boucher' |

Sounds good. Congrats!

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
That's fantastic! Sounds real good. Surprised you could run it without the valve covers. I expected to see oil going everywhere.

OK great. That means the oil pump and bearings are in good shape! By the way how did the inside of the gas thank look. Did you do in cleaning or put a coating in it?

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"
As the school year is upon me, I am a teacher, the time under, around, lean on the truck seems to be dwindling. Baby steps now. A little here, little there.
progress: Split the lines, with a new dual master cylinder. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q.../mstrcylnd.JPG New tires mounted up on fresh painted steelies. I love me some steelies! especially with dog dishes, wait for it..... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T...resmounted.JPG bam. ebay find. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s...no/dogDish.JPG I drop both lower control arms to get the springs out. I cut 1 1/2 coil off each. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...opfrontend.JPG To look like this: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...ntdropshot.JPG Now on to the brake drums, totally uncharted waters for me. Until next time, Dirty nails |
