What are your thoughts on 3rd generations, specifically a 1976 Chevy Sport
 

My mother in laws neighbor has a 1976 Chevy Sport for sale (stepside, all black, no longer has the markings but otherwise mostly original and in great condition) I'm posting in this forum becuase she told me it was a 1972 and I've been combing through this site the past couple of weeks or so getting my hopes up. I had thought I remebered it having something like houndstooth seats and was really getting excited that it could be a Cheyenne Super SWB stepside.

My question is, are the 3rd gens cool/collectible or are they just another old truck? Its weird how different I feel about the two considering how relatively similar they look. Even my wife was dissapointed.

None yet. Its in good condition though. 95k original miles, hes the original owner, garaged, no rust, runs like a daily driver.....just isn't a '72.

It seems more like a truck you lift and take offroading than a classic. Hes asking $5-6k, not entirely sure which.

I personally don't like them. They are good solid trucks that look good as well. They are still simple like ours are.

76 has to be smogged in california i think. that takes them off the table for me. If im getting an old truck I for dang sure am going to do whatever i want to it without the state harassing me for one more thing.

Great thing about Texas! after 25 years it only needs to appear to have all the smog crap. Out in the middle-of-nowhere like I am even the new cars don't get the sniffer or OBD2 hook-up.

My 87 IROC and my son's 99 Z/71 does not even have cats or mufflers:metal:

The 73+ trucks are less of a classic IMHO. Now, that's my opinion. You can just see how the extra plastic interior pieces crept in, and the squareness of the body, etc. They're more reminiscent of the dark period in Detroit motor history. If it means anything, my local junk yard puts the 67-72 trucks on the "classic" row, with 50's and up classics. The 73+ trucks are put back with Chevy minivans and modern suburbans.

I agree with the two posters above in that I see them as less of a 'CLASSIC'; however, collectible and classic are different and I have an argument for the latter.

At one time everyone fawned over Model T's - but then came a day when the people who could really relate and reminisce about T's were not in the stage of life where they accumulated and restored... so it moved on to the next thing. Are T's classic, yes, collectible, absolutely - but at one time they were a hotter ticket than they are now. Without a doubt there was a day when someone looked out the widow of their 72 Cheyenne Super and yearned for a Wurlitzer Chevy or something of the like - never dreaming he was riding in a CLASSIC.

I used to have a really cool '49 AD Chevy truck but I sold it and bought my '69 because one day I realized that THIS was MY truck. MY day. MY generation (more/less) could relate to them in our youth (I'm about 45). Guess what the first farm truck that was 'mine' was, yep, a '69. I only say that because there will come a day everyone is pulling up garage doors to see if there's a '76 Sport behind it... plastic or not; because that is what will be hot.

I could be wrong. They were pretty much unchanged for 11 years. That's a big run and I think it will affect the uniqueness of the body style in the long run - so maybe I am. It won't be the first time.

they are the last generation of "old" style trucks, i used to have a 79 and was searching for another when i came across my 70. myabe its just in my area but 80-87 model chevys were crazy expensive when i was looking a few months ago.

My dad bought a 77 3/4 ton 4X4 w/ a SB400 new. Great truck except the sheetmetal rusted away before it was 10 years old. Holes the size of your fist in the side of the cab.

I saw one a while back and while it's not a 67-72 they're still a nice truck IMHO.They're a little cheesier on the interior but generally have factory air and other creature comforts that we have to add to the earlier ones.I think I would have bought it if I didn't already have a decent DD.Or even if I did if ol'e what's'er name hadn't said no.I really don't need a 5th vehicle to tag,register and keep ins on.

they are nice, good looking trucks to me i would love to have one as a daily driver (use a 97 now), i have a square body 4x4 but i want a 2wd for daily. They are super simple to work on too and drive nice.

Since opinions are free, I'll add mine. They're not as nice looking as the 67-72 Chevys, and they seem to have more rust problems, especially the earlier years. Still, it's a classic by now, but I think $5k is way too high unless it's in incredibly good condition.

I like the 81-87 Chevy trucks when they narrowed up the nose a little bit. It made a big difference IMO.

I beat the livin' snot out of a 76 K10 and a 79 K2500 back when. They are awesome trucks, and panels and parts are cheap. These series trucks rust like a mo-fo. So beware...

I grew up riding around in the square bodies, and they kind of symbolize what a "truck" is supposed to be in my mind. I always wanted a short box 4x4 when I was in high school.

I particularly love the square body Jimmy's. My mother drove a 76 for about 10 years. Got it used in the mid 80's. 350, auto, 4-barrel, full time 4x4, and duals with glass packs. Someday I'm going to find one and recreate that vehicle in her memory. She loved that rusty POS.

However, I learned to drive in the old 1969 K10 farm truck, so when I decided to go for a project vehicle I wound up with my '70.

The truck 67wannabe posted is 2 brothers I believe here in Houston somewhere.

There known as the Reyna Brothers they both have c10 one is the orange another is blue, I've seen them on youtube before. As far as my knowledge goes I know they both are pretty close to being frame laying there of course anywhere between a 73-79? Motors sound like there stock so I would assume there either 305's or 350's they've been featured in magazines and everything.

It's all in what you like. I grew up with the squarebody trucks, and that's what I prefer. I would take a 67-72, but honestly would just trade it for a squarebody. It's all opinion, but I don't care for the 67-72's.

Most likely, though I still think I'll test drive the truck. I remember liking it when I saw it, but that was about a year ago.

I've been looking at the 3rd gens today but I think I would be more inclined to use it offroading than than to restore it. My brother has a 69 Bronco so it would give me something to chase him in.

The 76 Chevy Sport was a factory COPO option...and a rust free California truck would certainly generate some interest on Ebay.
Style and option preferences are personal.....but I think we will see more interest in the 73-80/87 styles as they go from daily drivers to special interest.The availability of factory crewcabs and 4 door/9 passenger suburbans is useful also.But I am biased...even if I have a 68 panel truck.

80SPORT - just to clarify, for my own understanding:

The '76 Chevy Sport was a factory RPO (Regular Production Option). It appeared in the catalogs and was available to the general public, just like any other RPO on the order sheet.

COPO (Central Office Production Order) connotes a combination that was not in the regular portfolio and required a special "memo" to get built.

Keith: Even though it appeared as a RPO the Sport still needed a COPO for
various things like: Exterior Colors/Carpet in Scottsdales/Tires and Etc.
