Help Identifying My Chassis
Have a 1956 F100 on a chevy frame, bought the truck little over a year ago, now lowering it, need to know exactly what I have to order spindles and other parts, past owner didn't know exactly what chassis it came from, looks like a C10 86 or 87 to me, it has leafs in the back, here are some photos, hopefully you guys can identify it for me, thanks Richie.
Just to add, the rotor measures 12" and is 1 1/4" thick. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps2758a794.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps357d1443.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps810c726b.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...psbd3ace37.jpg Here is the truck, I know I know, it's a Ford, but chevy powered:) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps80c98577.jpg |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Cant tell from picks but if the front crossmember where the proportioning valve is, the rear most crossmember, and the crossmember between the leaf spring hangers are all solid, its a 73-80. If all said crossmembers have cutouts it is an 81-87. If the e-brake cables on the rear axle both run to the left frame rail its an 84-87. You could remove the bed and decode the vin on the top of the right side frame rail between the front bed mount holes. Also check for a vin on top of the left frame rail in front of the engine.

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
^good thinking
look under its butt. if the rear most cross member has holes then 81+ |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Thanks, here's a few more, cross member in front of rear, rear one hidden by new fuel tank couldn't see it, and a couple more shots from up front.
Emergency cables are cut, you can see one in the photo, there's another cut one on the other side. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps223408a2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps0f08c513.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps1a889ad7.jpg E |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
looks like 80 and earlier.
|
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Thanks everyone, so I assume this is a C10 chassis, so just say late 80s C10 when ordering spindles, ball joints, etc., they all should fit and doesn't have to be exact as far as year goes, all have the same front suspensions then.

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
JK, little confused as to your statement, but, if I call a parts store and ask for a drop spindle, just say it's for a 80s chevy c10.
|
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
I believe the drop spindles 73-87 just ask what size rotor it has.
|
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
just spit balling here. any chance of it being 71-72?i belive they use different ball joints but had disk breaks too

(I happen to have the brake system release charts for '74 and for '87: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=510519) Shouldn't be a big deal, though. K |

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Next question, can someone tell me the correct replacement springs for this chassis or part number for aftermarket, came up with Boog springs number 6102, that has a ride height of 10", don't know what the original ride height would have been.
Thank You. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Bump, ordered lowering arms, now want new springs, anyone know the difference between Moog 6102 and 6082 springs?
Or, what would be the replacement springs for this chassis, Thank You. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Update, spoke with the tech guy at Moog, he explained how both springs work according to their load rates, both should give me the same height, the 6082s will give me the better ride, softer spring, not going off roading or loading this truck up anytime soon.:)
Thanks again for all the help so far, will post photos when done and let u all know how the lowering went with what I purchased. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
If it's a square body frame then look for a 9 digit code on the frame. Should be somewhere on the section behind the cab, driver's side if I remember correctly.
Decode 1st digit 1 = US 2 = CANADA 2nd digit is the year e.g. 3=73, 9=79, A=80, D=83 etc. 3rd digit is a check digit 4th through 9 is build sequence |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Thank you, when the temps go above freezing, will go back in the garage.:)

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Interesting, I've never seen a Ford truck on a Chevrolet frame. Usually seems the later model trucks are a little wide in the front for a transplant to an older body, but yours looks good. Post some more pictures outside the truck?

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Thank You,
Next question, anyone know the the part number or where to order the correct sway bar kit for this truck?, I see the 2 holes in the lower arm, new ones have them too, most photos online aftermarket ones have the bushings and one hole used. Have that bar on my 99 Silverado. This is what I think I need.. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps6678cae2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps0d244728.jpg |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
I like to get 73-87 factory sway bars at the Upull it yards, very cheap.

Installed sway bar today, dumb question, didn't even try, but, can this bar only be installed in one direction?
In other words, if flipped around, could it still work? Does this look correct?, it's in and clear of everything, but struggled to get bolts in on passenger side control arm and bar is only half way to 3/4 way through bushing, other side sticks out 1/4 to 1/2", tried to adjust it, won't give. Haven't put wheels on yet and lowered full weight on it to see how it lines up, waiting for new rims and tires. Thanks. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
I noticed you put on drop lower A arms, did you align the cross shaft dimple on both sides before you tightened the u-bolts?

Can't sleep when something bothers me..:) So went out and flipped it, same fit both ways, feel better now, ha. Once wheels go on and truck lowered, should help. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
1 Attachment(s)
Here it is flipped the other way, slight difference.
But still fits the same way. |
Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
If it fits the same way flipped over and too short on the same side as before that means its not the sway bar thats off, its something else like the mounts, or lower control arms, or bent frame. Might need to make some comparitive measurements from side to side.

Re: Help Identifying My Chassis
Thanks for all the help, suspension finished, happy with new stance, rims and tires, front end new 3" drop control arms, new springs and sway bar.
Rear end leafs reshaped to drop 3", new shocks all around as well. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ps1e79bf47.jpg |
