Spent a lot of money today

I got my tax return today. Came home and ordered the following.

Gm L31-R crate engine: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12530283
Edelbrock 2116 : http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2116/overview/
Mallory 4309 Fuel Pressure Regulator:
Fel-Pro MS98000T Manifold Gasket Set:
Melonized Distributor gear:

And a few other odd and ends.

But now seeing the price tag I'm feeling bad that I spent all that money. Hopefully when it all gets here and I get around to putting it in the truck. The smile while be back on my face.

It feels sooo good when you click the button to add to your cart. But once you click submit is when it all sinks in a little. Keep us posted when it comes in...don't forget the pics.

I have 12 grand in mine. Rusted and patched frame, one door, only front brakes, and honestly 4 different colors... But when i dump it at 5 grand and light my 38's up i smile bigger than ever... For now. I know when i got to buy new tires no more smiling lol

I started adding up what I have in mine roughly. Then I quit adding. It's probably better that way.

Thats why I usually buy a little at a time... and try not to add it all up later.

All funnies aside, congrats on your new engine. Nothing like the sounds and smells of a new engine firing up. :hot:

It's always hard to bite the bullet. But then again it's only money right?

Hankster: No build thread yet.

old Rusty C10: It sure does look a lot better. I hope this one stays clean for a while.

That L31, in my opinion, is probably the only crate engine bargain ! It will be a great running stock engine and a great foundation if you ever want to upgrade the cam specs too. ;)

Made some good progress today despite being cold out. Motor in, Trans bolted back up (minus trans mount. Which I can't seem to find one that fits). Exhaust, intake, carb, and water pump.

Same here on my K30 resto, especially after going the Cummins swap route
I just tell myself it's worth it.

Re: Spent a lot of money today

The TBI is in a box, sitting on the floor. After a year of trying to get it to run right. And spending a ton of money on it. I got tried of it and just put a carb on. FI is great when it's working, but once it goes bad it's a PITA.

Jonboy 02-28-2014 10:29 PM

Re: Spent a lot of money today

My '87 had a weird trans mount. I took the remnants of it to one of the box stores and matched it up.

'87 is a transition year and you get some old and some new body style parts.

Re: Spent a lot of money today

I'm too late. I was going to advise you to remove the intake and oil pan. Add a good bead of RTV to the corners and intake rear/front walls. It would save you oil leaks in the future. Using aircraft sealer on the bolts will also keep oil from creeping up onto the intake.

It's alive, It's alive. Only took me a month, but it fired up on the first try. I'm hoping to finish up some little things tomorrow and be driving it Friday, Hopefully.

Re: Spent a lot of money today

Drove it a little tonight, Wow that thing has a lot more power then the old motor. But in 3rd and 4th gears (sm465), while giving it some gas. It sounds like something is chattering, maybe clutch. Kind of like a diesel flapper. I do know there is a small exhaust leak on the passenger side manifold gasket. Going to fix that tomorrow. Think I should pull the trans back out and double check it. Any thought?

Re: Spent a lot of money today

Is it rhythmic? Or does it sound super random? If super random I would think it's pinging.

csdineley 03-14-2014 05:02 PM

Re: Spent a lot of money today

Only does it while accelerating in 3rd or 4 gears. Once I get to speed and let off it's fine. Today I talked with a mechanic buddy of mine. He suggested the u-joint. Which I did have a hard time getting it back in. So he might be on to something there.
