Operation 1950 Burn Victim

:chevy:

Good day fellow GM guy's. New build thread.
My bosses 1950 Chevy. His 1st ever truck. He picked this gem up when he was only 12 years old. Drove it through high school. Some time in 1980 she was the victim of a fire. Hence the title name. After many years of sitting in storage he has given me the opportunity to restore this sweet old beast.

4 very long days and she is all in pieces. Many more pics to come.

Oldman3
The plan is to bring her back to life in a classic, more safe state. Trying to keep her to the original style my boss had her in while he was growing up; with a few minor changes. Mostly what he "Wanted" to do.
3" Drop axle
5 lug disk brakes.
2nd Gen F-body rear diff.
Keeping the inline 6 for nostalgic sake and adding a dual carb intake and Muncie 4 speed.
For the pain we are toying with the idea of the finished paint of the interior and frame, as well as the firewall and radiator cover, and leaving the body satin black primer.
Wheel and tire combo are still in question.

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim

Got the frame all cleaned up and ready for blasting.

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...s72d8e65d.jpeg

As soon as the blasting is done and we make a final decision on the suspension then off to be powder coated.

Not really sure why this bracket was welded here, but it has been here for over 40 years.

Left rear corner panel and the right front lower cowl panel will be replaced. Debating on the right side foot area. POR15 and some DynaMat should do the trick.

Thanks LowElco. It's been a OTJ training. Haha. I built a Trans Am and that needed a lot of welding. So now for the nice stuff. HA.

Christmas is coming early.
Among all the little things that I have ordered from Brothers Trucks, (which is an amazing company to work with) from TCI Engineering I ordered their 1950 Chevy Truck Rear Parabolic Leaf Spring Suspension Kit - Part number: 432-4610-00

She is gonna look so so sweet sitting in the back.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...sbd8fc947.jpeg

We will have it powder coated Red along with the frame.

And the stance is great.
Good luck with your build..

I'm trying to post new pics but that blasted Photobucket is down.
I ordered the front end kit with Drop Axle and brakes and heavy duty Tie Rod with ends. Rear roll pan so I can trim out the back. I will be installing a rear access fuel filler from the licenses plate door next.
Picking up the frame from the Blaster shop tomorrow. Next step will be to cut off all the old spring shackle brackets and prep it for the "NEW" goodies.
Stay Tuned

Reluctantly waiting on Back ordered parts. As it turns out the front drop axle is made out of 100% pure Unobtainium. This is also true for the radiator support. I am not really happy with the place I ordered these parts from but what am I supposed to do?
So on to the things that I can control. Pictures!!!!

All theses goodies as well as the fenders and bed are going to the media blaster this week. Then off to the pain guy.
In the mean time the frame will be mocked up with the engine and tranny then sent out to the drivetrain guy to build a drive line and rebuild the Diff with some 3.55:1 gears.

Hopped Up,
Really? SIDS? I will check them out. CPP has not been the best to work with so far, so it won't kill me to cancel that. Thank you for the advice, I will use it.

Another day, another set of parts installed. We were slow in the shop this week so I was able to get the springs mounted up. Installing the new shakle bushings in the frame brackets and spring eyelets was just a blast. How come nothing fits? Next is transporting the frame to the DriveLine shop for new gears and a drive line.

Re: Operation 1950 Burn Victim

Another new week and many more new photos.

The Frame was picked up from our DriveLine shop
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psqn6jujud.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psuqcr3kqu.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psjpmctq3a.jpg

New DriveLine and a sweet set of 3:55 gears. Had to get a new axle and bearing kit too. But that is the life of rebuilding.
Next step is back in the shop.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe1ceeiw.jpg

Time to take off the Front axle.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psowwyc6u8.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psmhkfvflv.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psedco7sqp.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8g4f2yas.jpg

Engine is out and ready for paint.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psrkditii8.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psh7w2gzjh.jpg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psiorlyoax.jpg

The frame is mounted to the rotisserie and stripped back down to nothing.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...sroo7jtkd.jpeg
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...su3vhrc8p.jpeg

Not that the next images have anything to do with this Truck build, but we like Hot cars and such so here is what I was doing while the frame was getting the drive-train built.

As she sits in all her glory. Notice the cage inside. Yes, she needs that.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psffwztnsu.jpg

Pulled the 6 speed for another project and I am reinstalling the 4 speed.
But while we are doing this, let's freshen up the engine too.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...pslzssmjw5.jpg

With the Camaro engine at the machine shop, and the Truck frame ready for powder coating I needed something to fill my time with.
NEXT!!!
The 6 speed found a new home in the 69' RS Z28.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...skhbrcos7.jpeg

In pieces.
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...psgyevlgrd.jpg

And She is DONE!!!
http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...sbk7ekgiu.jpeg

Next on the agenda is fitting the rear mounted gas tank and sending the frame down the road for powder coating. The Cab and other such body panels are still getting the work they need at the paint shop.

I am expecting by the end of August this truck will be all back together waiting for the body.

Hope you have enjoyed this little show. :metal:

Last thing before I take her down to get Powder Coated is the frame for the rear mounted fuel tank.
I saw a few very good ideas on how to go about this. We wanted it to sit way in the back and NOT fill from the bed. With the addition of the rear roll pan we decided on having it fill like a 1969 Camaro. Got a Fuel tank from a 69' Camaro. Will have the license plate frame to match also.
Have a look.

Good morning Truck guys. Things have been really busy in the shop the past few weeks and I have not had much time to work on the ole' girl. But this week was different.. Got much done and took the frame back to get cleaned up and powder coated. :metal:

Bring on the pictures.:sumo:

A little on the engine 1st.
We have a built 235 out of a 57' Chevy. A little head work but nothing to submit to Hot Rod magazine yet. HAHA!

Here is the trucks original exhaust manifold that my boss and his dad modified over 30 years ago. Who am I to change that? So we are keeping it for the sake of nostalgia. Notice they added a second outlet for dual exhaust. Pretty cool. I just welded up a hole or two and made it pretty.

Good progress. Like the Camaro tank idea and will be interested to see how it comes out. Really appreciate the extra work making the box steel "look right". Frame is going to look great!
