Freddy's 52 part 2

3 Attachment(s)
Well, since I have had so many people ask me if my truck was for sale I have decided to build another one and use the funds to build a nice new shop (and a convertible for the wife) if I have enough cash. The S10 has been bought striped and scrap taken to the yard. I have a '95 caprice classic for the donor of the drivetrain. And if all goes well will trade another S10 I bought to my wifes cousin who has several of these AD's for enough parts to put together another truck. Let the journey begin.

I am pumped to see where this thing goes! Are you going to bag it? static? and how low do you plan to go?

1952ssr 05-27-2015 03:05 PM

Re: Freddy's 52 part 2

Staying static, probably keep it about 2 inches higher that mine for resale purposes. Not everybody likes them as low as mine. I'll build it the same as mine without dropped spindles, that way anybody can put them on to get lower.

Thanks Jim. This truck will be a little nicer...as rat rods go. Will do things a little cleaner and more professional looking. I learned alot from my truck and have a few "do-overs" that will apply to this build. I just got a new Lincoln 140 so I'm excited at not using flux core to weld with on this one too.

This S10 had a 2.4 fuel injection engine which will allow me to use the fuel pump sending unit from a GMC Syclone to feed the LT1 fuel injection allowing me to leave the tank where it is and all the lines and hardware. That way I can have a spare under the truck. It's things like that will help me keep this one cleaner.

That's what's great about a 2nd, it helps make them better through the build process...Jim

I looked through your build last night at home, I can see the pictures at work since photobucket is blocked by our internet. It's looking good and glad you got it going. Do you still have those 6 lug truck ralleys?

I don't they were one of the first things to part with when I figured out what I was going to use. I could have slod them 10 times since then!

Well the swap of s10 for another AD didn't quite workout as planned. Long and short of the story, I bought the s10 from my co-worker without seeing it. Well I had already paid him for it and then I went to pick it up and low and behold it's a shortbed!!!!! He had had a longbed and that was the one I thought I was buying, I had totally forgotten he had drove this one after he stopped driving the longbed (which went to the crusher). Well, anyway this truck ran so I fixed everything on it that was needed and through God telling me to and the financial help of our church gave it to a couple in the church that wanted to help do things around the church but didn't have a truck to pull their trailer and haul their lawnmower.

So with patience I waited for a truck to come, craiglist never had anything reasonable and then last week a 53 was sitting on the side of the road about 10 minutes from my house. I stopped and ask the price...$2,500. A little more than I wanted to spend, but this was a complete truck then I ran into the gentleman I was going to trade S10's with and he said he could had bought it for $1,500, but didn't even think about me buying it. Ironically I knew the guy who had owned it. Well he had sold it to some other guys. I tried to get them down to $1,800 cash but no go so I ended up with it for $2,000.

So another piece of the puzzle has been obtained. Soon this journey begins

Well got the truck home Thursday night. Since "Fred" is the name of my '52 this is gonna be "Eugene" which is my father in laws middle name. I talked to the guy who owned it, come to find out it belonged to a classmate of mines grandfather. Here's some more pictures before I put it in the shop. Cool how it still has the spare tire.

Looks like a nice start on your project. Let me know if you need anything I'm beginning to see what stuff I will not be using on my truck. Also got some specialty tools if you need to borrow them along the way just ask.

Well was off a week after Christmas for company shutdown. During that time finally got the LT1 and tranny out of the Caprice. Removed everything else I could use, fuel lines that will be an extra set for "Fred", the fuel tank... loved it cause it's plastic and flat but, can't use it cause it's too wide to fit inside the s10 rails.

Got the seat and fuel tank out of "Eugene", also check out the tag I found attached to the door handle arm. I thought it was cool. Also guys look at these door latches and the differences. Anyone recognize the ones with the big latch plate, where can I get them? Thanks

The door strikers in your first picture are 52-63 and the second picture are 47-51 both styles are available from classicparts.com and most of the other parts places. The 47-51 have turn down handles and the others have push button.

Re: Freddy's 52 part 2

I need your help all S10 swappers, I need to find someone who used the S10 bed floor for your AD's bed floor. I am interested mainly in how you attached it to the front and rear of the AD's bed. I have searched over 20 pages of S10 swaps and haven't found one yet. They're was a thread from years ago where this was done but I can't find it or my works internet has blocked the pictures. Thanks for your help guys.

Saw this on the killbillet.com s10 swap site. Hope this helps. He said he used square tubing to mount the front. He has step by step pictures. I think it will help.

Rear of bed. I think I would use taller tubing to fit the rear. But thats just an idea.

Thanks, that is one of the ones I was remembering.

I think have decided to do all my welding from the bottom side and then do some seam sealer on the top side for a clean look.

Thanks for the link, unfortunately that's one of those threads I can't see the pictures thanks to my works internet security. I will try on my phone or at home when I get a chance.

1952SSR, there is two shows this Saturday, the 14th, in Gainesville. Are you planning on going to either one? If you are going to one I think I will drive over in my truck as I would like to meet you and see your truck. Let me know if you will be going and which one you will go to. I hope we can meet up.

Most likely not, I have my son this weekend and got a lot of stuff to do around the house. We'll get together sometime. Any progress on getting the gas logo.

Got the bed floor tacked in place last night. I have to get me a spool of .025 today, I think the .035 will make a mess based on some of the spots I tacked up. I removed all the bracing except the second from the front and then welded a 3/4 piece of angle at the rear to allow it to have a decent fall at the rear to weld up. With a few minor drills with my step bit on the factory bracket I was able to put the bolts in and it be secured. Also included is the method used to mount the rear, nothing fancy either. Used a hole already in the frame.

Made some more progress, with the floor 3/4 fully welded I moved onto transferring the cab. Finished that up last afternoon. Now onto building mounts and transferring running boards. I plan on shaving a little off the filler piece between the bed and running boards to tighten up the space between the cab and bed, I am not crazy with the amount from factory.

I think this one is proceeding faster, even if I am going about it a whole different way.

Well finally with the shut down week at work I was able to do some more to "Eugene". Had got the cab mounts made, running boards removed from old chassis and installed a couple of week ago...pictures to come. So spent last week dissecting and repairing the front area of the cab and the rocker panels. I'm trying to save money by making patch pieces instead of buying them, I had an extra set of rockers from my first build "Fred". More to come shortly.

Been quite awhile since an update. So here's a run down.
*Got floor replaced with solid sheet, tunnel to be cut later.
*Got chassis blown apart and cleaned.
*Painted halfway with chassis saver, will finish when it warms up.
*Made patches for each inside corner of cab, leaving rusted out corners.
*Cut and welded gas neck to cab.
*Cheap way of making recessed cups for front mount, I did weld up.

For you S10 swappers who need tubular upper a-arms for alignment issues or just to look better, here's the cheap solution. Order right side (they also work on the left flipped) G-body a-arms from Speedway in their racing section 49.99 each.

Not sure on gauge, but it's thick. I got blessed with 8 - 5'x5' sheets for free at my work. It's all I can do to jump on my foot shear to cut it and my 8' break had trouble bending it.
