HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I have an original 1968 C10 stepper with the 250 6 silly and 3 ott tranny. Paint, interior and drivetrain are all original. I did lower it 3/5 static drop and an hei distributor. Otherwise original with 23K mile truck.

I had said that I was going to leave as is because there aren't many like it around here...........but lately I've been having thoughts of molesting it and dropping in a High performance drivetrain and souping it up with horsepower.

What to do what to do..........

What would you do? And why?

Nice ride. Just ask yourself what you want. Keep in mind that the 6 is a great engine and will run virtually forever. Then go to a show and walk down a line of trucks. SBC's are great engines.so much so that they are the "bellybutton" of street rods. These trucks and many performance rides. In the end, you have to do what you will be happy with. Keep in mind that if you are looking for a true performance(or handling) machine, there are a lot of alternatives that are a lot lighter and easier to get that from.

I have a 250 w/ 3OOT in my '71 and every time I drive it I wish it had an LS motor in it. It's staying that way for now but one day I'm going to put something in it that will increase the fun factor.

As others have said, do what makes you happy.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

The thing is can you yank out the engine and slide in a say 450 horse motor without looking back? The truck HAS to be enjoyed by you [and family] and if you have done all of that you want without bigger power then go for it. I don't think anyone here is gonna flame you for building the truck you WANT. Like I tell people at the sale they look at me crazy when I buy something to junk out and they say that would really make a clean builder and your gonna part it? I tell them Clean truck make clean parts. So you could think of it this way your so much ahead on making a clean hotrod out of what you have cause it is so clean and neat not much has to be done. Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

Well, I have a 70 with a 462 BB. And I have a 98 camaro with 600+hp ls1. So I have the power.

It's a nice truck but I always crave more power...........I'm addicted to power.

I tell myself in the sea and rows of sbc engines, the 68 stands out as different. Then I crank it up and putt putt away. Slowly. Lol

Part of me says keep it original and the devil in me says "drive it like ya stole it".

Then I thought I'd sell it and buy something I wouldn't dread modifying.

go crazy with it, but don't do anything that can't be undone. and save all the original parts.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

It is a really cool truck I love the thought of having a straight 6 truck but I like power to. If u wanna be different and have some more power you can soup up the 6 banger header, intake, carb, cam. I don't know how crazy the power would be but it would be pretty cool in my opinion. Or go all out on it the sky is the limit ( and how much you want to spend) Just keep in mind they made a million of these trucks and it's not like it worth a sh@t load of money all stock.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

Love the truck. It looks awesome. Would it be possible to do an LS swap and remove all 6 cyl stuff and hold on to it for a later date? In case you change your mind down the road?

I would totally swap it.

Now that's a good suggestion.

Yea, I thought about an LS swap and hold the original equipment in case I wanted to swap back.

Now I had thought about this as an option already, I haven't explored the thought yet in detail but thought cam, head work with headers, Intake and carb. I figured maybe, just maybe I could hit the 250-275 hp with 300 TQ might satisfy me and still keep it unique and different in the sea of sbc trucks.

Anyone done this and have suggestions on what parts work best together.

I know these inline 6 s are dam near indestructible in stock form.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

If you go SBC don't do an LS motor, go old school v-8 283 or 327, Truck looks great
I know everyone is gonna get on me about the LS engine, but to me putting an LS engine in one of these truck is like putting a late model sportside bed on these trucks just don't seem right or look right

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

Do you have fab skills? Build a basic turbo charger setup for the straight 6. That would actually be really neat if done right.

Edit: fab skills. I meant to say fab.

Incredible truck you have! I lean toward doing a very stock, factory looking LS swap and leaving everything else alone.

I do rather the ol school look on these trucks. Nothing against modern engines as they are ultra reliable and dependable and for long term drivability they can't hardly be beaten.

It would be tough not to install a modern LS as they almost cost the same as ol school engines.

I have found some info on turbo 6's. I even got a chevy 6 cylinder book on hot ridding them and turbos are in there.

This. And when you tire of that, add a turbo. And when you tire of that, twin turbos. It's a disease, man.

Like others have said, it's your truck and do what makes you the most happy. However, if that was my truck. I would leave it completely original stock. I absolutely love the stock look of those steppers. And by the way, beautiful truck!

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

CST10, I look at these trucks as packages that go hand in hand

6cylinder, 3oot, drum brakes ,smaller tires,

Ls, aod, disc brakes, larger tires.

If you beef up the 6 cyl, then the trans will be weak. Then you go faster and the brakes need improvement, Then you go faster in the turns and you want better handling.

Every time i drive my 68 c10 swb ls, aod, disc brakes, dual antisway bars, larger tires, i smile and don't desire to go back. The old school stock is the underlying basis of this forum in my mind and respect it as i had a truck like yours in high school. Thought it was great for what it was, as it was, but i love to modify things, fabricate things, so my current 68 satisfies this urge! Love your truck and the ball is in your court.

You gotta ditch that lame six and 3ott. Then post your air cleaner on the parts board for 25 bucks! As for what you replace it with that's not really important. No need to thank me for the advice, I just want me, I mean you to be happy!Attachment 1421183:devil:

You've already lowered it. Might as well continue on. Drop it more, add ls motor, some bright paint and then get a tribal arm band tattoo. Big pimpin:metal:

Very nice truck! I have had my share of 6/3ott and honestly never enjoyed any of them, but thats just me. Ls swap is cool but with the stock look of yours I would build a 383/th350 or 200od and dress it up as a 327 with stock air cleaner etc. Just my opinion

I agree, this truck is so nice and original, I'd leave it as is. If you're serious about selling, shoot me a price.

everybody else has givin alot of ideas and opinions, so i will just add this. i think it would be sweet and very fitting for the truck. i think it would satisfy the hunger for power. obviously there are alot of things to factor in but the general idea

I agree! I made a joke earlier cause I don't know you and can't tell you what you want on your truck. My opinion is the same as those who said just do what YOU wanna do. That motor in the vid is awesome though IMO. If money is not a factor then I would get that. It may end up costing more than or the same as a crate motor but I think the strait sixes are the coolest motors out there with the only downside being power. You can get power out of them if your willing to build them though, as seen in the vid lol.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

I went through the same thing this spring. I thought i wanted an ls in mine(looked at several complete trucks), but the more i thought about it i just couldnt take the 250 out. I love beeing different. every other one i see at shows has a small block in it. I always get asked when i am putting a 350 in it, and i tell them the 250 is staying. Most of the time i get but why. Plus the decal on my window says low n slow...lol

Well i decided to put that money into the 250. I bought an offenhauser 5416 intake, edelbrock 1404 500 cfm carb, and stovebolt cast headers. I also located a 194 head to run on it(ups compression to 9:1(from 8:1). Heads out to get checked for cracks, when it gets back i will install all this. not doing a cam at this time. maybe down the road.

If it was me i would hop the six up. You said you had others to feed your need for speed. Nothing wrong with a nice cruiser.

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

I drove my truck last year with the stock 250/TH350 combo and really enjoyed the simplicity and smoothness of the engine. So much so when it was time to "hot rod" the truck, my mantra was the ol saying "Do no harm (to the driveability)".

With the LS, EFI, 4L80E, and 4 wheel discs the truck drives better than ever and is smooth as glass cruising down the highway. The beauty of the turbo engine as well is it drives like a stock truck until you get into the boost. Then it's the stuff dreams are made of...

I never had one in an oldies but if you did and Ls swap I am almost sure you will never look back. Will want one in every ride you own. Heard great things about them. I want to put a 5.3 vortec in my 64 c10

Re: HELP! I'm having second thoughts on current set up.

Be careful with what you decide, I did this with my 71. It was a long bed, inline 250 and 3 on the three. I made it a swb and built a 350 for it installed a rebuilt 700r4. I drove for little while and missed the original way it was now it sits behind the garage. I thought that's what I wanted sold most of the parts too so, I'm looking for another probably long bed to build. I was on a road trip other day coming through Missouri and seen one just like what I started with I missed it so bad called myself an idiot. Lol just saying think about it and I like being different, I like power but I have other cars for that.:chevy:
