1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
So.. as we are currently rebuilding my 69 C10, my mate and I weren't looking for a new project for the two of us. But then came along this Matching numbers 1950 GMC 3100 with I think a 235 CI motor and three on the tree manual.
We haven't picked it up yet, that'll happen the 19th of this month. but here are some pictures. As you can see a lot of work has already been done by the previous owner. we'll respect the color sceme and we'll rebuild it completely stock. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-6BSUVCHT.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-HWJCLVM8.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-BUACZVOJ.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-CS7GZZOS.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-CYKUEDUV.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-JF84G6MF.jpg Don't hate the hater, but as much as I like the example below..I hate the wheels and the bellyscaping...but it could turn out something like this http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-463ZXUQV.jpg updates will follow when we have the truck in the shop! |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Nice truck...
Will be following this build |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Nice truck!!!
FYI...if its a numbers matching truck, that's not a 235 but probably GMC 228, one of the 'Jimmy 6s"...either way a very solid truck! :gmc2: |

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Thanks for the positive responses guys, gives me the feeling we didn't buy a lemon :)
I'm trying to decode the VIN, but I could do with some help, because Google searches don't get me anyware. if it cost money, could someone run a report and I'll pay upfront through paypal? |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
After a couple of nights without any sleep it was finally time to pick up the truck. Saterday morning we first picked up the flatbed trailer and stuck some wrapping materials in the van.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-H3EMHVQF.jpg driving there we were quite nervous, because we thought it would be a nice day, but the rain was relentless. But as we pulled up, the rain stopped and it turned out to be a reasonable day, which became perfect when we laid eyes on our new truck. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-OLYPURXT.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-WNNQ7BD3.jpg So cool, we drove it onto the trailer under it's own steam. the engine, gearbox works all very well! http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-SG438YA4.jpg It's in a better place now...OUR garage hahaha. it looks like a proper car shop now. '68 Charger, 71' Cuda, '50 3100 and the '69 C10 http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-CACQRR7F.jpg We put the hood on just to look if it lines out and it lookes good. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-VOUMQN3G.jpg So what have we done so far? cleaned off all the dust. Sorting, Sorting, sorting, sorting. mounted the right headlight and chrome rings. assembled the parking brake, which was missing the rods and put in a new spring in the gear selector lever. There is so much stuff to go through in about 15 crates that came with the car, but we'll figure it out, or I'll just ask you guys :) |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Yep, looks like a good one. Nice shop too!

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

you’d be suprised how many US classics we got driving around in this tiny country. Shop is maby a bit overrated, we’re all hobby mechanics. The owner of the cuda is an orthodontist . my friend who’s helping me on my truck and the 3100 does something with airplane parts. The owner of the charger has an office job at Nissan and I sell enterprise hardware at Dell. (I hope you don’t mind me working for an AMERICAN company?) Quote:

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Working on the truck last Friday and came across some rot when we disassembled the parking brake. we'll have to strip it bare and see what's hidden underneeth, because we think there might be more than meets the eye.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-IDYBJEP6.jpg and now for some questions..we wanted to mock up the door, just to figure out how all the trim goes in and in what sequense.... how in the world do you get the outer door window trim in and without damaging the paint? http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-ZDQW4JMV.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-IEBMHZQH.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-K6JFSIDC.jpg Were missing one of the mounting rings for the front parklights , I'm told there are not for sale..is that true? if so I'll open a thread in the classifieds. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-IJUNECWI.jpg can anybody tell me why there are 2 holes in the side vent? what belongs there? http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-IQH7FWAZ.jpg |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
And now for some bad news...
the PO took off the vin tag to paint the body, our dutch DMV doesn't like that we found out. so we called them, and they'rer actually sending somebody to come and check if our truck is legit, or just a great pile of scrap metal.. We [being the idiots] ofcourse blindly trusted the PO when we bought the truck. I mean, c'mon! it's my mates neighbor, so surely he wouldn't have the stones to play us? Now if we look closely, the vin tag has a different number then the title... so we'll just have to wait and see what's going to happen. In the mean time, we didn't sit still. we installed the doors to fit them and see how straight they align with the body, also we put in the front window. the doors look great, just need to be sanded lightly and then painted. the front windows went in in 20min time, but we have a delux seal, so it needs a trim which we don't have yet. we were also contemplating a rubber molding to go in there, but not sure what would fit. We also ha d 1 hole in the floor panel, that had to be fixed, so we cut it out, welded in a new piece and glued in some washers, because the bolts come from the bottem up. then sanded it down and it's waiting for paint. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-IQEKSMJD.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto720-XTDRVCXZ.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-JUSOCMC4.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-8DLZBL46.jpg came across a beautiful 47 chevy in the parts shop/garage: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-7GTUXNM7.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-C3U7IPBG.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto360-ODZ4K8KS.jpg |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Steve, I see your truck is going the right way ;)
Keep at it!! I know someone who has an AD truck and has serious troubles to get it registered, also wrong numbers...Hope it works out for you! Nice '37! You've got a lot of nice cars in your shop :metal: |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
You could always order a new VIN plate and stamp the number on it thats on the paperwork. Of course you would need to check with your DMV and see that its ok to "restore" the VIN plate.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
the 27th someone of the DMV will come by the shop and look at it all.
keep your fingers crossed! |

if we get their approval, they'll "seal" the car, which means we can apply for a dutch registration ones the build is finished, but we cannot change anything until then. So engine, drivetrain etc etc has to stay as is. pfff nerveracking! |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Good luck for the approval.
What is the reasoning on why changes aren't allowed? |

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Small update, because we're mostly busy painting some trim and sorting stuff waiting for the DMV. but in the mean time we contacted the company who imported this truck back in 1996(!) to see if they still had any records..
no was the answer, but the guy said that when he's back in Holland (he roaming around Cali looking for cars) he's be able to help us out for $1000,-... ehhh let's see what his plan is before forking over the money. tbc! |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Still no update on the DMV stuff, so busy ordering bits and pieces, painting and repairing the steering wheel.
We visited a small old-timer meeting in a former car museum, which is now converted to a conference center. http://myalbum.com/photo/wKOLBb0kqIqW/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/e4PtLokJNg9S/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/E8oye2MRlViy/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/eb2uJjySlbEb/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/pOaWv7FhkRG1/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/dVKJi5XeaMmn/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/JGL7PeVVdDzV/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/AJvlok6I8kd2/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/2Fm6Ty7DVG3A/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/vEsWnaGyYgjW/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/rMvi6jMAyBml/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/BFcl8dr8yOws/360.jpg My favorits? the 50's Cab-over truck and the panel van...yes I like patina :) |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Got an update from the guy who originally imported this truck and he claims to have a solution for the DMV problem, so my pal will visit him the week before x-mas to see what how and who.
We haven't been sitting on our arses though, well...I have been working mostly on my c10 while Ferry (yes that's my pal's actual name) has done everything on the 3100. He concentrated on the bed wood, because he had a stack of tropical hardwood (bankirai or something like that) laying around for years. so after measuring it was clear this would fit the bill excactly in thickness, all that had to be done was cut them to the correct lenth and width. then make the groves with a wood router. to bad I didn't take any pictures of that, but here is the finished product (well...still have to sink the rings and then sand, sand, sand, laquer, sand, laquer etc etc http://myalbum.com/photo/3Snhfn5Bgl3H/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/2qjRgDiI5w2v/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/LG2tuwhyt3av/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/lbjtwyyyqRdZ/360.jpg |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Hope it works out for you, that registration problem!
Woodwork looks good in the back ;) |

one of the problem's we found is that the aftermarket front bed panel sits about an inch to low. we can solve the bolts not lining up, but optically it's just a bit off. |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Panel from Prins Trucks?
Let him measure an other one to see if this is a wrong piece. Before you drill and weld something that's not nessesary.... |

we pulled it apart again, because the bedsides and fenders are going to need a hell of a lot TLC, but more about that later! we have been finishing the doors. all painted and assembled. I'm amazed how easy these doors go in compared to my '69. http://myalbum.com/photo/lLE0GUIeh71w/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/U13lM33VFsRh/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/ldqprPYmQwlF/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/vhUn9qfgNslK/360.jpg then the outer trim was put in place, this is such a #$!$%$ job...so easy to scratch the paint, which we did of course, but nothing that can be fixed. in stead of screws we re-drilled the holes and used rivets to hold them in. http://myalbum.com/photo/GMUzNRnCy4We/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/iuQn3x0CJsah/360.jpg We tackled a other big hurdle, hood alignment! we followed the incomprehensible description on Stovebolt, but managed to get the hood where we wanted. we had to ad a shim to the radiator support and loosened all the fender bolts. we will have to widen some hole in order to get everything buttoned up again, but this is where we are at the moment. http://myalbum.com/photo/VeUEu7aQy0gj/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/NtR8clnZtMhX/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/sXqBS1lcfbsY/360.jpg |

Very nice! Love that simple, clean look!!
|
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
It's coming along Steve!
In the pics the hood sits pretty good! |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
thanks guys! Friday night we'll see if we can get it even tighter, if not it's coming off for paint.
in the meantime, I've opened a thread in the parts section, because we're looking for the center dash cover and glove box door. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...69#post7506969 |

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Ferry did some amzing work on one of the hood corners, it was missing a piece due to rust, and he tig welded a small piece in, looks amazing!
http://myalbum.com/photo/3gv3ZnE1umzl/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/ryAipACsptc4/360.jpg we also completed the doors and found out that the damn aftermarket window regulators are off by an inch! http://myalbum.com/photo/DCi2gvz0x6jc/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/KR9ybE786WYx/360.jpg so the 2 choices we have is: buy new regulators, or make brake which will cause the window to stick out of the door in the rolled down position..any thoughts? we then installed inside window fellt and screw it tight. still it sticks out a bit above the trim..is this normal? http://myalbum.com/photo/084GfBomYE7q/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/kEiQSBCC8Cin/360.jpg put in the door panels, but we need the trim, 'cause they are bulging and that makes it look funny. http://myalbum.com/photo/gc9JuNCEyGuv/360.jpg |
Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project
Time for an update: we have all the right title papers now, so as soon as the build is complete we'll head over to the DMV and get the title transfered to a dutch license.
Ferry got busy with painting the front bed panel, the tailgate and the hood http://myalbum.com/photo/8y6DrEgTTLdm/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/0qMkZpZpkyLV/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/OZIaKUIBumhW/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/x4dFfXq92bTu/360.jpg then we mounted the hood and emblems http://myalbum.com/photo/PRjQRK4Rao86/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/dXh7YZHe3sJU/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/xwiCrVBWEnTM/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/XudMtmNTFWmH/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/emxtv6h6ggwQ/360.jpg then we mounted one of the running boards, which had already been painted by the PO.. but discovered it has a dent in it, so that'll require some work and probably a fresh paint job. http://myalbum.com/photo/y6XdPjQfWBhh/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/2kdNGXtqqfoI/360.jpg then we took out the bed sides and came to the conclusion they're in horrible shape, so that'll take weeks to get them straight.. http://myalbum.com/photo/TmeMexeUnNoQ/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/yKKE0azrMCqN/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/1tishapoumVS/360.jpg 2 weeks ago I went over to The Hague for a monthly meeting called :Saterday Night Cruise. I'ts a popular meeting with about 200 cars or more visiting, a band and beer. Lot's of nice cars, but just took some photo's of simular models as ours. http://myalbum.com/photo/tLKUCwrgcrCq/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/lZQq6TKJemBy/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/WlWNfmGFHEeM/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/8Rman3TRUqAv/360.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/g461IRAykKZf/360.jpg |
