Ole Rusty

never say never. I said I would never do another 2 into 1 truck build but here we go.

I have a 1972 c30 longhorn in really rough shape. no engine or trans. lots and lots of rust. I want to be able to pull the old Airstream trailer I will buy someday.the first plan was a tbi 350 with 700r. after pulling my 21ft travel trailer (newer model) on I75 with my 01 150 I decided the v8 would not do the job.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7krkltll.jpg

so now here I am pulling this old truck off the frame, going to fix the body up and put it on this
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps3fwaxjbm.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psvydoafsc.jpg

the plan is to keep the c30's stock look.im even going back with the factory white on orange paint even though the ole lady said your not painting that color again are you? lol.

this will be my first frame off truck build so I might need some advice and pointers along the way. hope to post lots of progress pics soon.

Got some more demo done on rusty. Floor is not as bad as I thought. Maybe I wont have to replace the whole thing.

first time I really noticed the odometer reads 26k. I was told by an old mechanic that if all the numbers lined up perfectly it had not rolled over. the floors are in decent shape. I should be able to get by with just rockers and a few patches

Re: Ole Rusty

well I need to buy a mig. anyone have any tips on a good brand? I have been told by several peeps that Hobart makes a really user friendly 110v that is very dependable.

I'm gonna have to find some more doors. these have serious cancer where the window channel?? attaches to the main part of the door

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscssvjnbf.jpg

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...pshs8j83p4.jpg

and cancer in the main part too. not much left of the bottoms. I think I could cut the bottoms open with a pair of preschool scissors.

the heater box removed. pretty good back there.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8slh1x2x.jpg

and a shot of the extra dodge cummins truck I ended up with when I bought the 4x4. need to sell it. it needs an injection pump and axle shaft. only has 119k miles and is a manual trans.

I have decided to do this color scheme.

Mediterranean blue and corvette white both from 72. the truck in the pic even has the wood grain trim mine came with.

And I thought I had some rust to deal with...

Nice job so far. This ought to be interesting.

Re: Ole Rusty

got most of the frame and engine pressure washed today. even did the bed inside and out and underneath. the frame was a farm truck so every surface was covered in an inch of dirt/grease. what alternative to sand blasting it. there is a good bit of stuff that wouldn't come off and I want a clean surface to paint since there will be a good bit of frame showing on this build.

Re: Ole Rusty

Yes to the welder question, Hobart does make a good entry level machine. If you have 220V in your work area spend the little extra and get a 220V machine. When you decide to sell the Dodge post it up on here as well I have a few guys looking for a truck just like that.

I need to sell that thing. where would I put it up at. all I see on here is sections for chevys.

Re: Ole Rusty

Under misc. for sale there is a non Chevy vehicle for sale section. When you say it needs a pump is it bad or missing?

Re: Ole Rusty

Just read thru the build, noticed a couple things, your old bed looked like a longhorn 8.5' bed, has the added section in the front, the replacement looked like a standard 8' bed.

On the passenger cab corner it looks like you use the whole corner, if you can get away with it try and cut the replacement corner down smaller of possible that way if it ever has to be re done again you still have some factory meat left on the table..

What welder did you get?

wolfsmurf70 03-13-2016 07:10 PM

Re: Ole Rusty

got a Hobart. works great. I was doing the longhorn but there is too much $$ to get that bed to where I want it to be, I did a quick shopping list for just the patch panels and floor parts and was into a grand already and since I was putting the whole thing on a 8ft bed frame anyways ill do the reg lwb.

all I know about it is the then owners put it in the shop to get a random miss fixed. they put a pump on it thinking that was it and it hasn't ran since. I can get it to run with a puff of go juice into the turbo but it quickly dies. they had told me they thought the new pump was out of time so I pulled the front cover and everything is in time according to the FSM. I would get a used pump and drop in there but Im in too deep on rusty.lol

Re: Ole Rusty

my adhd kicked in really heavy and I couldn't concentrate so I just set the bed on the frame to measure for mounts.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps6l00aabl.jpg
looks pretty good. I got it centered up side to side and there will be clearance for wheel travel.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbie2sdwz.jpg
rear mount will have to be 1 1\2 in off the frame
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psxsh0gzrj.jpg
front will be 3in rise.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psku1r3u2c.jpg
and we still cleared the fuel tank and rollover valve they decided would stick up a few inches above the frame.

maybe tomorrow I will get the wheel house rust repaired. a buddy works at the tech school and they have a press that can punch the square holes in the new metal for the carriage head bolts.

NEW MEAT!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...pseqwfol4q.jpg
while i had the gear box off i decided to see if i will be able to combine the chevy column with dodge gear box. i lucked out, splines match up on both ends!
ill use the chevy D-joint since it is tight as a drum(dodge had a little play in it) and the dodge rag joint.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psecg8zjrb.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psn5wt6ayk.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psszhybk6v.jpg

dam it seems like im not making any headway but im not getting burned out yet. on the good news side i have a guy who wants to trade me a 5 speed getrag with all the trimmings(bellhousing, flywheel, etc) for the dodge cab! cant wait.

does anyone know of a thread where someone made their own clutch pedal setup along with hydraulic lines and such? i need some ideas. ive found a russell performance braided line kit with the connections that will fit dodge clutch master and slave, all i need now is to figure out how to make the pedal setup and a bracket for the cmc.

Re: Ole Rusty

since we have the front clip off i went ahead and pulled the timing cover to fix that pesky KDP.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psctqxfsws.jpg
found it had moved a little.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...pstm6oxxke.jpg
a chevy starter shim, pair of tin snips and a couple minutes later and its blocked off.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...psif2q8gmd.jpg
maybe i can get some more little projects done tomorrow.
