found 60 carryall

5 Attachment(s)
last sunday we cruised up to missouri to look at a couple of suburbans. one was a 64 with a few options but a big bunch of rust. the other was this cool 60 GMC carryall. this truck was sold new in 1960 from Atherton Motors Inc. in Burbank, CA, it has 87,000 original miles and was garaged till about 6 years ago. The man who bought it new, passed it to his son in 1965 for his son to drive when he moved to Missouri. The son is who I bought it from and it was never registered in Missouri. It has fallen off the nice original spectrum but has some interesting options... 351 big block V6, 4-speed hydro, custom cab chrome, 4 sliding windows, orig. radio, some kinda hydro-boost thingy, clam-shells. still in decent condition are 3 hubcaps, 3 seats, headliner and complete dash.

sorry about being so windy... on to the pics-

Wow that is really nice. I have to ask a question. What is a 4 sp hydro transmission? I never heard of it.

Looks to be a two barrel so a 351 upgrade or intake swap?. What number is on the engine pad behind the fuel pump?
You have all the grey knobs as well. Should have the three seats too.

I know its wierd... on the indicator, far left is neutral, next is 1-4, then 2-3, then reverse... and theres no park.
I've got the same thing on a 58 cameo.

Got the seats for sure. I will get some more pics of the engine and clean up the codes on the head. Maybe you can help figure out what it is.

The original color is a 2 tone pale yellow with white down the middle. Its got the big chrome in the windshield and a really cool hitch. I think its kinda neat to be the second owner and when I go back for the 64 I will ask if theres some more history and pictures on this one.

Interesting water pipe setup by rad hose and non stock alternator on the drivers side.

Re: found 60 carryall

I guess the engine must be a 305. Called the guys son and he thought it was the big block but from the feedback I've gotten on the forum, i don't believe so. frankly I really don't know, not being a GMC guy.

But a plan is starting to form. The 64 burb has a bad body but the 60 carryall has the earlier less desirable chassis. Use the best of both and combine with a 5.3, 4l60 and disc rear all from an 02 that I have. Toss the bulbous hood and use a 65 GMC hood thats out back. New gauges and static drop and some 16" artillery wheels with wide whites. Nothing too radical but all well done.

Of course the plan is all adaptable because this one is a 'build to suit' truck and I haven't found the new owner yet. So, for now, its going out on the range with the rest of the herd.

Another thought… this carryall is so complete that it would be a candidate for a complete restoration should the right person come along.

I will post more pics as i can and also the 64 burb when i get it here…

it has nothing to do with hydro. It is a hydramatic transmission and is an a/trans. this is the same trans as was used in 53 and 54 vintage olds and caddies

I'm in for the ride Clem, I would like to see how you will work the different body mounts. On my 62 the front cab mounts are longer and the rear frame flares out. I am also going to swap over to a 64 frame.

Those ugly hoods are becoming beautiful. Funny how I hated the early hoods for so long, and now I'm seeing them differently. Their homeliness has an certain appeal that fits just right ...for the correct year that is.
Give it some more thought before tossing that pig-nosed hood. Nothing so beautiful to a pig as another pig. Lol.

About the trans Cad's had them in 49. my neighbor has a 53 Olds with one, and he just had it rebuilt. had a hard time finding someone to rebuild it. the term hydro, if i remember right comes from B&M hydro as the modified these. when i was a kid a guy had one (b&M) in a 58 chevy with a 63 409. car was pretty quick back in the day.

Not sure about that challenge, the frames should map out the same, figure to just change mounts. we'll see.

that trans is a huge, heavy and bulletproof monster that is very expensive to overhaul… soon to be yard art. i never really thought it had water instead of tranny fluid, but hydro sounds better than hydra.

thanks for the comments guys, will post up pics of the 64 when she's here.

Re: found 60 carryall

Looking at the various replies Clem, it seems this one could go any way. Having it out back with the herd is a great idea though.

Allows it t mature and come out just right.

I do like that tow hitch. Very pretty.

I never made it to see your stash previously. This one will add a bit of interest too.

I have that exact same trailer hitch set up on my 62 SWB C-10, also originally a California truck.

If you look underneath the ball mount, it almost looks like it may be some sort of early load distribution style hitch?

It mounts in several locations, distributing the load across the back of the frame real well too.

I thought about removing it, but for nostalgias sake (and usefulness) I'll probably end up just leaving it in place.

you are right about the garage thing but had it been that nice, i couldn't have afforded it. progress begins the day someone wants it...

went back to the site to pick up the 64 burb. this one is no where as nice but has some good options still there. factory air, power steer and brake, most of the custom chrome and those very rare swivel bucket seats.

still worth dragging home... heres what it looks like.
