What years came with th350?

I just read somewhere that the th350 didnt come in any 1967 1968 trucks, is this so? did they really only put th400s in these trucks until the 70s?

Re: What years came with th350?

The TH350 was first used in 1969 by GM, I am not sure if the C10 was granted it that year or the year after, so to confirm, yes 1967 and 68 trucks did not have a TH350.

Re: What years came with th350?

"The TH350 is an automatic shift, three-speed transmission. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest of automatic transmissions ever built.

The TH350 transmission was introduced in the 1969 model year as the successor to the GM Powerglide automatic transmission. Jointly developed by Chevy and Buick, it is also referred to as the CBC (Chevrolet-Buick Combined) 350. The Turbo 350 quickly become known for its strength, versatility and compactness.

The HydraMatic 350 transmission was prevalent in nearly all GM, rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks through 1984. It was typically paired with Small Block V6 & V8 engines. It was phased out of use and superceded by GM's 700R4 starting in 1982."

Re: What years came with th350?

TH400, intro'ed in 65, is something you'll even see on a 283/327 66-68 C10 with an automatic. TH400 is stronger, of course, but the TH350 is so prolific and common, it truly is a great piece of gear to have been around so long. Another tid-bit, on the subj, TH350 was the only option for automatic trans in a K10/20 in our era trucks. And 3/4 tonners did not automatically get a TH400 either. TH400 is most commonly paired with a big block truck, but we've even seen exceptions to that norm on here I believe.

Re: What years came with th350?

I love love love manually ripping through the gears on my purpose built TH350. It absolutely rips. Stock to stock the TH400 is stronger than the TH350, but it is also heavier has more rolling mass and Rob's significantly more HP.

I think the first availability in the trucks was the '69 Blazer. Then it was available midyear of 1970.

Like Jocko said, I don't think automatic transmissions were available in 4x4 trucks, officially, until 1971 model year.

Re: What years came with th350?

1969 was first year for GM, including our trucks. Power glide and turbo 400 before that. 69 4wd only blazers got the th350. 1970 was first availability of th350 in the rest of the 4wd line

^^^ BINGO!! '69 Blazer was the first use of NP205 transfer case (with the TH350), too

Weird, it's a 1/2 ton with a 327 v8, always figured it was a th350

If it says Hydromatic it's the TH400.

I always thought the Powerglide came in early trucks also.

Re: What years came with th350?

RPO M35 = PG and was available thru 71
RPO M49 = TH400 (only) thru 68
RPO M49 = TH400(w/BBC) | TH350(w/SBC) starting in 69
"Turbo-Hydramatic" just meant a 3-speed Automatic - which one you got, TH350 vs TH400 (starting in 69) was dependent on engine ordered.
General rule - I do believe there are exceptions.

My '68 had a 327 with a TH400 in it from the factory. Still have the trans but I am running the TH350 now.I like the 350 engine and 350 trans combo.

My 69 short step is factory 307/TH350.

Re: What years came with th350?

Prior to '69, the TH 400 was the only 3 speed auto, the powerglide was the only 2 speed auto. It gets interesting and confusing between '69-'72, where there were 2 3 speed autos, both called " turbo hydramatics". GM most often used the M 49 code for both autos on SPIDS. A few SPIDS use the correct M 38 code for TH 350. The application is were it gets confusing, it can be engine specific, series 10 20 30 specific and year specific. TH 350 usually show up in non big block 69-72 2WD-4WD C 10's- C 20's. TH 400's usually show up in big block trucks and C 30's and some '69 C 20's with any engine 6 or SB. TH 400 was generally reserved for more severe operating conditions. Not sure if you could have special ordered one 3 speed auto over the other 3 speed auto outside regular rules and specifications.

Ha! This post is exactly 3 years old and I just noticed it. I don't believe that is exactly what Jocko said - I believe ;) he said that only the TH350 was offered in 4x4s, i.e. no PG or TH400. Just to clarify. What I did learn in these subsequent posts is when TH350 first became available in the Ks. I doubt Turbo-Hydro confusion will ever go away with both the TH350 and TH400 being the same RPO...

I have a 67 and a 68 c10 , both had powerglides from the factory . I also have a 69 c10 that came from the factory with a turbo 400 . turbo 350 transmissions are great ,, that is to say Ive never killed one , and I did have a built 461 bbc with 650 foot pounds in front of a well built one , it worked well . I have killed a 2004r ,, and several 4l60s ,, hate 4l60s

Re: What years came with th350?

But... some internal parts from the 4L60's can interchange with the TH350 and make a beefier TH350. :)

My Grand Paw bought a new 69 chevy that came with a 307 not long after he got it , motor blew and they replaced it with a 350.

Thanks for the clarification, year, engine and series are important when talking auto trans applications.

Re: What years came with th350?

My 69 C10 originally came with a 307/TH350. The 307 has been replaced with a sb400, but the original TH350 remains.

Did you know that the truck TH350 differs from the car TH350? The truck version has additional clutch pack discs. Learned this when I had the transmission rebuilt.

Re: What years came with th350?

There are all kinds of different calibrations for transmissions, just like carburetors.
