Two 4 One patina drivers

The title may seem a bit confusing, so I'll clear that up first. As luck would have it my brother, custom4me, and I plan to build two patina drivers this summer for the cost of buying one patina driver. Both trucks have been purchased and we plan to keep a running total, mostly just for fun, to see if we can meet our stated goal. We want 4/6 drops and 18-20" rims/tires. The current selling price for a decent 4/6 dropped driver seems to be $7,000-$12,000 depending on condition, drive train, location, etc.

I'll start with my truck. It's a running and driving 67 swb with the 250 and 4 speed transmission. I've owned the truck for about a year, but I haven't made much progress on her. That should change, now that my brother is in this with me. A little backstory/side note, for those following along. When my brother and I were teenagers our parents owned a 68 short step the same color as my current truck. I was thrilled last year when I was able to purchase this truck.

My brother's C10 is a 67 long box custom with the 283 and 2 speed powerglide. The truck was purchased this week and we haven't even hauled it home yet, so running/driving condition is unkown at this point. According to the previous owner it was parked some 20+ years ago due to a broken exhaust pipe.

The brother and I rescued the red custom today. The spid is really faded, but I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. It's a good thing I brought the rims/tires off the green on with me.

I'll follow along. Any plans on chopping down the LWB to an SWB?

We've talked about it, but that would add work and cost to our projects, so I doubt it will happen.

The orange krate, as my brother calls it, fired to life tonight. Waking the 283 from a 3 decade nap was surprising easy. The little 283 sounds and runs great. She needs a little tlc before she's ready for daily driving, but our project cleared a major hurdle tonight. The only cost was a set of plugs, but I'll add that to the total when I perform a complete tune up.

It's amazing how little it takes sometimes to bring these old trucks back to life .I did the same thing with my 74 stepper a few years back and it had sat unmoved and unstarted for at least 20 years that I watched it in a barn .I still watching a few others but they are not yet ripe for pickin.

Update, went to the DMV yesterday and registered the Orange Krate. Also got the paperwork to apply for a conditional title on the 1970 Yamaha RT-1 360 motorcycle. The plan is to sell the Yamaha so if any of you are interested let us know.

While waiting for our drop kits to arrive, my brother and I rescued another c10. We both wanted short beds, so the orange truck may be looking for a new owner soon.

Custom4me 05-28-2016 08:17 AM

Re: Two 4 One patina drivers

We also dropped Orange Krate off at our painter's to have the front left fender replaced and painted an orange patina to match the rest of the truck. I made a small LMC order for the new fender, a new gas tank, trim, dash pad and the Chevrolet letters for the hood.

A few years ago we did 60's volkwagens together as well.

Re: Two 4 One patina drivers

The addition of the 68 step side may complicate our plans/thread a little. We planned to sale the long box when we found the 68, but my brother's almost driving age daughter has claimed the Krate as hers. At this point we plan to make the Krate a safe and reliable driver and see what happens. The 68 step side will be lowered and made into the 2nd patina driver. We'll keep track of the cost for all three trucks and then subtract the sale price of the Krate when it's sold.

Re: Two 4 One patina drivers

current total: $2600.
68 step side $800.
2 lowering kits
(disc brake &
5 lug conversion) $ 4320.

New total: $7720

My better half would kill me if I got that many boxes in one day! Better to spread them out over a month ;)

Love the Two 4 One idea my step dad and I did that with square bodies when I was in highschool good memories

Ugh, the fact that you got the exact year of truck I want, in the exact color I want, with the right amount of patina and a SWB...FOR $1400!!!

I am dying of jealousy.

I sold the '70 Yamaha today to a collector for $150. So we will subtract that from the purchase price of the 67 Custom

Last week I spent some time working on my brothers 68 step side. According to the casting # the engine is a 1980-1985 350 cid. The previous owner robbed a few parts off it while it sat unused. I can understand why he took most of the parts off, but taking a set of used points seems a bit extreme to me. I plan to see if I can get it to fire before reinstalling all of the parts it's missing. I also bought a battery and all the normal tune up parts ($183).

Today I spent a few hours removing the front suspension from my truck. The process went well considering how rusted the parts were. Both lower control arms are damaged, but I received the new control arms a few days ago.

Total: $7720

Lower arms $278.00
Battery &
tune up parts $183.00

Sold motorcycle -$150.00

New total: $ 8031.00

Pulled it out to see how see looks. So far, I'm very pleased with the results. Once I set it down I noticed the new lower A arm is touching the dust shield which causes the rotor to rub slightly. I'll take the rotor off and grind down the A arm a bit asap.

Got the easy end, I thought, torn apart. All four of the bolts that hold the rear springs into place broke off. I figured I'd break one or two, but I was surprised that all four snapped off.
