My Dads old '68 which my parents moved from NY to CA in in 71.
Was born a short step, years later was stretched and 3/4 t suspension to haul racecars with an 8' camper.
Put a ton of miles riding shotgun in old blue

Anyways it popped up for sale again.

wasn't a question what had to happen.

Wow, a shorty C10 step converted to a C20 longbed. Now that's different.

That's awesome you bought it back. How long had it been "out of the family?"

Might have been the only one ever done!
Obviously well before the trend of shortening them
Cool, memories for you

Nice truck and story. I sold mine, it was gone ten years and I bought it back from the guy I sold it to. Now the wife says I can't ever sell it again.

Yup! Someone that came to their senses! :)

Every time a long bed gets cut down to make a short bed I hear a Queen song in my head. :(

You are both so fortunate to have even had the opportunity to reclaim a "family heirloom", and then to be in a position to actually make it happen!

I can't count the number of times people have said to me over the years, "yeah, I used to have a truck like that. Wished to heck I never sold it..."

And we've allseen the threads on here imploring us to "help me find my/my dads' truck".

I've had mine for going on 35 years now. Never have thought about selling it, and don't think I ever will...only God knows for sure though!

Congrats to you both!

Re: old blue

Wait... so the truck has been gone for 20 years. You were out driving one day and randomly drove passed it???

Damn!!!

Re: old blue

a family friend bought it from my dad, he kept it for years and was sold in a nearby town.
Then was a graduation present to the guy I got it from or something like that.
They decided to park it my home town for more visibility and wasn't parked 10 minutes when I stopped.

Kinda meant to be I believe.

Glad you got it back. What now? Put it back to work hauling the LUV? Just about the same color

Cut it down to a shorty step and convert it back to a C10, of course!

Re: old blue

Will stay long and C-20. Mostly clean and polish it up. Has some old pinstripes that need freshened up and the door signs too.
And find some slot mags for it too.

Well gave it a good bath, and a shakedown cruise.
Has this too, was a really neat truck before the long bed swap.

Needs a few mechanical things and a buck of cosmetic stuff.

But overall I couldn't be happier!

Re: old blue

That's quite the story. You know pretty much the whole history of the truck since new. It looks very complete as is. Even has an auxiliary gas tank? Sits up nice and proud. I agree some slots may just be what it needs to complete the period look of a camper special kind of '68. Other than some touchups I don't see anything it really needs. Cool deal bud.
Since the truck kinda fell into your lap so to speak wouldn't it be cool if the original camper showed up as well at some point? ;)

Re: old blue

I got the Readers digest of everything last night. Man what a story.
and it's been more like 30 years gone, the family friend had it for 20 of those and been with 2 other owners in the last 10 years.
Was a manual brakes-steering 327 3 speed on the tree shorty.
The rear clip and bed was from a 72 C-20 that had a cab fire, the t400 and driveline's swapped on a weekend because the camper was to long.
The 454 was from station wagon swapped after the long bed deal.
The entire front x-member rotor to rotor was swapped for an 8 lug along with the power brakes and steering
Then it was 8 lug up front and 6 lug rear.
The the 8 lug rear was swappedal in.

And I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff.
So damn neat driving it around feel like a kid again. Except my daughter is about the same age I was when it was sold.

And I appreciate all the comments.

Been a crazy few weeks. I got my dad's 68 back.
The next week my dad's right hand man that owned old blue for 20 of the last 30 years, he bought my dad's old racecar back.
I haven't seen this jeep since I was 9 years old.
Yesterday I got drive it...

And my mom found a pic of old blue from 1971

Now that there is a cool story! No doubt keep it long, it looks so right. I agree with whoever said some period slots would look nice. Even some wide steelies with some caps on them would look sweet. You are very fortunate to have come across your Dads truck, it was meant to be...

Another one, looks like the grille behind the trim was blacked out. Dig it.

Thanks been real neat tinkering on it.

If battlestar galactica was out means 1978 ish.

I would've been 7

Re: old blue

I hope you get your slots. They were born to be 8-lug. Others look alright, but they look best in 8-lug or on the rear of a front engine rail. Now to see one of these 8-luggers with slots pushing a rear engine rail with slots...that us too meakin' fruch!! As cool as that shot of the C/20 and race Jeep. Awesome pics

Re: old blue

I have been looking and looking for a pic of them together.
Mom has been digging thru old photo albums for me.

And I've found a p/n for 17x8 slot mag with a blank as in not drilled bolt pattern and the correct hub size.

Just need to pony up the $1000+ for wheels and the machine work for them.
Plus tires.

Re: old blue

If any one else is looking a way too do 8 lug slot mags in 17x8

Here's a way-

Old trucks are fun they said.

Right rear brake sounded terrible, and was really bad.

And it's east coast heritage is really showing.

Right rear cab corner had a rag in it, pulled it thru the inside.

Goodness what a mess

Wow, what an awesome story!

What’s the details/specs on the Jeep?

Looks like it was preserved extremely well!

Just got the DMV renewal today.

Still such a neat feeling driving this old truck. Even better teaching my daughter to drive in it.

The story just got better. Back on the road and your daughter driving it. I don't do all that newfound "generation" stuff people started using to identify body styles. I say the years same as always, such as 67-72s. But that's a 3rd generation C/20 for sure!

She's claimed it already, but our sonoma will do for high school abuse. If she's anything like me it will have to be General Lee tough.
