Big Block Downpipes
Where can I find downpipes for my 69 396?
I'm using the stock exhaust manifolds. |
Re: Big Block Downpipes
Any exhaust shop can make them.

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Actually, he/she/it said Downpipes, so only a Downpipe shop can provide such a mythical beast...

Re: Big Block Downpipes
I searched all over the internet for some and never found any, post up if you find some.

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Am I thinking of something different then just a pipe with a 2 or 3 bolt flange that bolts to the manifold and then is bent to mate up with the rest of the exhaust?

I hate going to exhaust shops, just bad experiences there and would rather buy the correctly bent piece. And if I order the right part I don't have to drive or trailer the truck to the exhaust shop with open exhaust. |

Pypes, Flowmaster and other companies have them for 60's & 70's Chevy big block cars, but I haven't found them for our trucks. I've got an email out to Pypes Performance Exhaust. I'll share what they tell me. |

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Reviving an old thread with a similar question, Looking for downpipes for a '68 396 factory manifolds...???
I'm simply looking for a economical ($300-$500 range) functional exhaust, does not need to be full factory. I 'thought' I'd find a system, use what I need and go from there, but this is proving a bit more of a challenge. Short of trying to find a shop to make something (as in $$$) I'm probably going to piece it together myself. I'm fine with this, but I've not yet been able to find downpipes (396 w/manifolds). Does anyone know of any source? Thanks, Kevin Adding, I am aware that it appears the original poster may have opted for the Pypes downpipes, but I'm not sure I'm keen on going with a shorter filter. I am also aware companies like Waldron's make a full system, but I'd rather not end up spending close to $800 for a system. A photo of the truck, where exhaust currently exits front of rear tires under utility bed (where I am planning to keep it): https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...819_183140.jpg |
Re: Big Block Downpipes
When I did my truck, the only people that I found that supplied dual exhaust down pipes for our big block trucks was Waldron Exhaust in Michigan. They made me 2 1/2" exhaust pipes for mine, that I cut off behind the cab, and adapted to a 2 1/4" muffler system that I bought from LMC I think. Waldrons is usually backed up, and it takes awhile for them to make a run of any certain pipe, so I had to wait awhile for them.

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Took my bbc to exhaust shop, $350 dual exhaust with tail pipes, custom bent. I supplied thrush mufflers..

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Most any exhaust shop can do it. Probably the simplest update to a truck. In NY you have 500 more exhausts than most of us within a reasonable drive.

Re: Big Block Downpipes
Update: Posting as reference for others.
After having no luck finding a local shop I decided to call Waldron's to see if they would sell partial pipes/systems. To my surprise, the answer was YES :) I'm not planning to run my system all the way back, I already have a set of Flowmaster mufflers, etc. so the critical piece for me is the DropDowns. After talking to Ruth (very nice lady at Waldrons ;) she said they can cut the main pipe (that runs from manifold to muffler, ref photo in link) to whatever length I wanted. We decided on 5', so that should be more than enough to get me to where I'm going to place the Flowmasters. The more I looked at all the bend detail as the pipes exited the manifolds, the more I was thinking it was going to look too "Frankenstein-ish". Getting the dropDowns from Waldron's will make this a whole lot cleaner and for just over $200 will still keep the system in the budget ballpark. Adding here, for pipes larger than 2" (these will be 2.5") they use 14 gauge, which is pretty solid. https://waldronexhaust.com/product/1...With+Pipes+Cut |

Who did you use in Medina? Tailpipes out the back, straight or to corner of bed? Thanks. Got a 69 396 Longhorn, has pipes in front of wheels, its ok, but would rather send it to the corners of the bed at the rear. THanks LILREDGMC |
Re: Big Block Downpipes
B & M mufflers in Sarahsville, Ohio. Not far from Pittsburg.
740-732-5509 He does all the exhaust in this region. He did a 427 chevelle with manifolds, and my 67 small window, with BBC and manifolds. He used some of the stainless exhaust I had from the V6 duals. He custom bent down.pipes. I had exhaust flanges, for the manifold. Can't beat his quality and cost. |
Re: Big Block Downpipes
I've had quite a few comment on the sound of the Hush Thrush thru tail pipes out the side.
