1967 step side build!
 

Hello all! I'm new here but not to hot rods. I recently bought this 1967 step side with a 250 straight 6 and three on the tree. I drove it for about 3 weeks before the build started. First I ordered a power disc brake set from POL. I decided to go with 5 lug so i also ordered a rear axle kit from speedway. Since I would be in the rear end I replaced the open carrier with a Eaton unit and fresh bearings. I left the original 3:73 gears. I also ordered a CPP 5" rear lowering kit. I just got my upper and lower A arms back from powder coating and since they look so good I've decided to have the frame coated as well. So now I have to strip it down so I can get it to them next week. I also ordered a fuel tank from Boyd out of Florida. Now on to the pics.

These are the 12" power disc brake conversion kit I got from POL. I had them powder coat the calipers black. Great company to deal with.

Can't really tell but this is the CPP 5" lowering kit. It came with shock relocation brackets, adj. track bar, shocks, and 5" lowering springs. I also replaced the trailing arm bushings.

Wow! You have a great looking 67 too start with.

The lil' bit of the frame we can see looks pretty clean.
That sure is a alot to get it out, pc it and get it all back together without changing anything substantial and muffing up the pc. That wouldn't make anyone happy.

The disc brakes is a good idea in this day and age, just be sure your rubber lines too the calipers fit well and don't rub all over everything else.

Looking forward too seeing it lowered once its all back together.

You'll find a lot of info on here if you look around.
Certainly ask questions ive learned that can save ya some sanity or some dough for other cool parts.

Btw, I noticed in your pic the rear brake shoes are on wrong. The shoe with the shorter pad goes on the forward side of the backing plate.
The shoe with the longer pad goes on the rearward side of the plate.

Oh yhea, I'm a 67 fan. I dig all the one year only or unique stuff that the 67's have.

Super clean looking stepper...she will look sweet lowered. Did you remove the trailing arms to change the bushings or just drop the arm down at the pivot point?

Thanks all for the kind words! Good heads up midnight about the brake shoes I guess I missed that. I do have all SS brake lines but will watch my routing.

As far as the frame goes when I did all my rear end work I painted the frame. Then I ordered cab bushings and the new paint next to the old rusty frame was killing me. I could of taped things off and painted around them but that's half a$$. I plan on going with a sbc and 700-r4 with power steering so I would constantly be taping and painting. And for the $420 they will bake, sandblast, and coat frame. I'll have almost that much in time and materials if I painted it myself.

Bugz I stripped the rear frame totally apart to put bushings in.

I've got to temporarily mount a arms and rotor today so I can measure for my wheels. Going to run a 20"x8.5" riddler wheel with 4.5" BS. Anybody know what size tire to go with? I was looking at 245/45/20 or 245/40/20. I've seen on here we're some run a 255. I'm going to drive this truck regularly so I don't want a tire rub issue.

Well I made some headway today on stripping the frame. Should have it about ready tomorrow. Love 50 year old bolts. Lol

Well she's stripped down. Waiting on my Boyd fuel tank to mock up and transmission crossmember then she's to PC. Ordering wheels and tires tuesday. I gotta make a decision on front coil spring height. Already have 2 1/2" dropped spindles and 5" drop in rear. Thinking of a 1" lower spring. Any thoughts?

All depends on what look you want....I'm running a total of 4.5 in the front and 5.75” in the rear. But I went with a taller tire (235/70-25) in the front to improve LCA ground clearance.

Got my wheels in today. Ridler 695 chrome 20x8.5" and 20x10. There gonna look killer.

If you use a too narrow tire for the 10.5" rim you might be OK. I have 275 55 17 on the back of my 69 shorts step. 17x9 zero offset with the later 71-72 5 lug axle swapped in. My truck is leaf spring and flipped for 7" drop. I have about a thumb widths clearance to the inside of the bed and a finger on the outside. No rubbing but it's close.

From what I have learned on this site and If I am not mistaken, a 10.5” wide rim will rub, without tubbing....dependent on other factors such as backspacing and axle width. Hopefully the experts in this area like Lolife will chime in.

well... I got worried if it would rub. So after I mocked up the fuel tank in the frame I set the bed back on it with the rear wheels. Its real close but no rub. Im running a 275/40/20 Nitto tire. Glad I listened to the wheel guy and not got what I was gonna get. I think to give myself a little insurance I'm gonna run a 1/4" spacer on the rear wheels. On a side note with Ridler wheels you have to use a thin wall socket to get the lug nuts on and off.

Do you have the wider axle? 57” . Also what was the gap on the outer side of the tire to the fender? Reason for all the questions...I’m considering a taller and wider rear setup myself.

I had about 1/2" or better on outside. I'm lowered 5" not as much as you so I don't know bud. As far as width of axle I don't know, haven't measured it. But I believe it's the original '67 12 bolt. I can measure if you need me too bud.

Just realized I posted wrong size rear wheel. I have a 20x10 not 20x10.5. My bad fellas! Sorry if I mislead anyone. I guess I was thinking about my Cobra wheels they are 10.5".

Got the fuel tank filler neck frenched in tonight. Gonna lower the tank about a 1/2" from designed height. I'm waiting on power steering conversion kit and sway bar kit from POL to mock up before powder coat. Supposed to be here tomorrow. That'll put me at PC Friday morning. 👍 I'm ready to put parts on!

What they call the “wide” rear axle is 57” from backing plate to backing plate.

Well I guess UPS and FedEx are hating me this week. Lots of parts. POL power steering conversion kit came in. I had them powder coat the reservoir black which looks killer. I also splurged for the braided stainless lines.

POL shipped me there front and rear sway bar kit. No more gangsta lean going around corners. Lol got the rear halfway mocked up. Don't want to drill into trailing arms until....

....I install my CPP dropped cross member. Probably didn't need it but I liked that I wouldn't need as many shims for the pinion angle. Plus it would suck to do it after PC. And the exhaust has a little more options.

I also got in my POL engine tranny mounts and crossmember. They look sweet especially the engine mounts. Ordered them with the poly mounts. Question where does the engine mounts go for a small block and 700-r4? Forward holes or rear?
