396 Headers

Just wanting to know what any of you are running for headers on 396 engine in a 72 k10. My motor will be moved forward about 1 7/8 from the small block 350 location.

If you give up on headers, I bought these to go in a 72 that had a cracked manifold but eventually sold off that project and now have these in the parts board for sale. These fit excellent in our trucks.

I've seen those ,but not sure which route I want to go. I'm not afraid to notch the frame a little.

Re: 396 Headers

Yep nothing wrong with a little shave off the frame. I actually built a 70 with a 383 stroker and used a set of Hooker Super Comps. I mounted the engine all the way back as far as it would go without firewall mods. I had to do minor clearanceing to the frame to get fit.

Sure are pretty. If they sold for $402, I might buy them. Not. Wow, that is expensive! I guess I have gotten used to the local pick-your-part yard.

Re: 396 Headers

Is a K10 frame the same as a C10 frame? If so, use a set of Chevelle long tube headers and you can tuck the exhaust up inside the frame rails, but you will need a tubular trans crossmember and a custom or aftermarket shift linkage if you have an automatic.

You can get the Chinese knockoffs for 1/2 that, but those are built for the restoration crowd. At a fair price IMO.

I bought a set of Chinese big block Corvette manifolds to use in my short step but wound up buying Sandersons ceramic coated manifolds. Which are twice the price of those manifolds.... but I thought it was worth it.

I had a set of Chevelle BBC headers that came with my L34 396, didn't fit without cutting the transmission crossmember and wouldn't clear the automatic trans. linkage either, WAY over rated! Had to make a show in 72 hours so I ordered these, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I placed the order on Tuesday, delivered on Wednesday! Still on the truck and rust free! Best deal out there! Ball and socket collectors and they came with gaskets and bolts! PS. They still dont leak!

That would be the best option IMO, no clearance issues and low hanging should not be an issue on 4x4. I just wanted to tuck the exhaust between the frame rails, and found out there were a lot of other mods that went with it once I got the Chevelle headers installed.

Hedman 68198 These are full length, long tube headers for the '67 Chevelle BBC.

Re: 396 Headers

My plan is to rebuild a 396 out of a 69 gmc and put it in my 72 k10 and slide the motor forward so a 700r4 will bolt to the transfer case and keep it in the factory location. The exhaust manifolds on the motor now have been changed out and have plugs in them for emissions. So I just figured I'd be better off putting my money towards a set of headers and gain a little bit more H.P.

If you are going manifolds, try and find the RV ones with the expansion joint in the middle.

I have an '85 cab and chassis truck with a 454 on it that has those manifolds. I think they are listed as stainless?

Re: 396 Headers

I put hedman mid length coated headers on my 402BB. Look good, sound good and fit without any cutting. Don’t remember the number of The headers but the mufflers are Dynomax ultra-flo welded #17221. My muffler guy recommended them for a big block and he couldn’t have been more right. I found them on amazon at a descent price

Re: 396 Headers

My truck had a set of Hooker headers in the bed of the truck when I picked it up. The PO had them ceramic coated after he yanked the engine and tore it down, but then decided to not redo the engine. I completed the engine build, and those headers fit perfectly. Long tube headers that do not drop below the frame. The label is still welded on, so I will see if there is a part number there that I can forward to you.

My Hedman 68198 just arrived. I've unpacked them and they look great! The gasket package has a picture of a 67-72 C10 on the front!

Again, these are for a 67 Chevelle BB and according to a few other posts on this board, they do not hang below the frame once installed.

Those look very nice and they have the ball and socket flange. I have the same flange style on my camaro and love it.

Need to make clear. The "Chevelle" headers will not fit our trucks with column shift automatic transmissions, nor will they clear the factory auto-trans cross members. They may look great laying on the floor but lets not mislead the unknowing into thinking those are a simple bolt on and go header. Modification or an aftermarket cross member is required as well as a cable operated shifter to allow clearance. Chevelle headers are highly over rated in my opinion when mid-length options are available..."Just sayin" ~Ghostrider~

Re: 396 Headers

Right!

I made the assumption that anybody willing to spend this much money on a set of these headers is going to do the research up front to ensure they're gonna work. Much like I did.

Maybe that's a bad assumption. It's a good clarification though and one that is spot on.

These headers, 68198 Hedman, require mods on the C10 to fit ( Auto tranny shift linkage and crossmember ).

Did you get your Headman headers on yet?

weq92f 02-10-2018 02:31 PM

Re: 396 Headers

Not yet, the heads are off still. Just got them back from rebuild. Have a car show to make in about 4 weeks though :)

Gotta install new cam/lifters, heads then measure for push rods, order them and then put it all back together from there, including the headers.

I've got the cable shifter ( column shift but cable driven to tranny ) and aftermarket crossmember, so it should go without hitch.

I'm running a set of these on my 454 in my K10. Engine crossmember is moved up to the next set of holes. No clearance issues
