Small block GMC valve covers?

I have a 70 GMC with a gen 0 350 small block. I would like to have valve covers that are stamped gmc. I have seen gmc covers for v6 motors. Anyone make them for v8s?

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

That's something you'll need to make. There are things like this for Chevy Trucks because there are Chevy cars. No respect out there for Chevy Trucks' big brother. I've wanted to make something up for one of my GMCs with embossed letters. Right now one has LT-1 covers and the other has early Edelbrock finned aluminum. I had real nice rare GM Performance tin covers with Chevy Power and a bowtie embossed in raw metal to paint orange but I sold them because I don't want it to say Chevrolet anywhere on my GMC. We are on our own

I have seen this question raised before no easy solution. GMC's just don't get the love. I wonder if a fender emblem would look tacky? Or a glove box emblem? Maybe couldn't handle the high temps.

GMC covers would be cool, but the reality is it IS a small block Chevy. On my kids Jimmy we went with the Proform Chevrolet raised letter valve covers. That let us paint the entire engine assembly and then we used 600 grit sandpaper to restore the aluminum finish to the letters.

Yeah I know it's a small block chevy, but when you look at valve covers, everyone else has their name stamped. I have found- edelbrock, holly, stroker 383, corvette, and tons of other brand names stamped in. Well, I guess I'll keep looking and hoping.

I am going to have something fabbed for my 67 gmc 327. Not sure what to do yet. Wish gmc ones. Were available.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

what about cutting the gmc out of the v6 covers and welding them into v8 covers like a rust hole patch

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

Good idea. But the gmc font is an older style. I'd also feel a little guilt cutting up an original valve cover

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

Billet valve covers. Instead of ball milling the GMC in them, have them milled to have the GMC raised letters.

Where the gmc is on the v6 covers has a bit of a curve on the cover. I asked my metal guy if they could do that and he said it could be done but would be hard to get to look smooth on the small block cover.

The ''350 INVADER'' decals were GMC-specific. I also heard the GMC motors were red, not Chevy Engine Orange.

Make sure you post a pic once you are done. Looks good!
I just found out about the 350 Invader stickers and may go with them.

I guess we could split hairs and say once Chevy Small blocks were put in GMCs they became GMC small blocks, just as later they became THE GM small block for all the BOPs. And after all, General Motors Corporation is who makes Chevy Trucks

That's cool to see someone do the embossed covers like that. It's something I have planned to do for a long time. Just don't need them before a lot more stuff before that becomes important. I have all what it takes sitting waiting. I had a really cool pair of N.O.S. GM (not Chevy) Performance valve covers that had a bowtie and power embossed with Chevrolet stamped in the bowtie forever.

Attachment 1824069

They offered chrome, which most people went for, and raw for painting. I bought the latter and the plan was paint orange with blue bowties and paint the power white. But, now that it looks like the two GMCs I have now are my keepers I didn't feel I'd be using them, so I let them go. Too bad GM lacked the vision to make ones embossed 'GMC Power', but even the ones I bought didn't last long before changing them to just Chevrolet and I'm pretty sure just in chrome. Same PN, both now discontinued. I thought those covers were so cool looking same as stock with the embossing. And that's what gave me the idea to make my own. For now it's vintage finned aluminum Edelbrocks on the '72 and Z/28 covers on the '67

Those are nice. It would be a shame to pierce them for Oil Cap, PCV, etc.

67 327 I don't think he has to. Fills through a tube into the manifold and I don't think they had PCV.

That looks nice. Are you having a PCV system by some means other than using the valve covers, or road draft tube and breather somewhere else, or some other way to vent?

Thru the draft tube. In 66 and 67 with the closed pcv valve option the valve threads into the oil fill/draft tube and the valve covers stay smooth. In 68 the tube was discontinued and all of its functions moved to the valve covers.

1968 still used the road draft tube and the oil fill in the intake.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

Yes you are correct. The tube was still there in 68 but the pcv was permanently moved to the valve covers. In 69 it was gone.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

My '68 C/10 came optioned with a 292 L6. [Still does but it's rebuilt and not stock now.]
I had PCV routed from the top of the valve cover into the carb in back, and fresh air pickup from a snorkel in the air cleaner stack into a big grommet in the left side of the valve cover in front.
But my truck was a California vehicle [Felix Chevrolet], so SoCal emissions gear was required.
I have kept the PCV, air cleaner intake set up, as it just runs right with that stuff on, even though I ditched the A.I.R. [smog pump] system years ago.

My 1968 327 originally came with the no holes valve covers and the PVC system is not part of the valve cover system. It is closed just as your valve covers are. I know this also to be true for the 1968 307 V8s as well. I believe the PVC system in the valve cover began in 1969 when the oil fill tube in the intake and the oil draft tube system were obsolete.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

My original '68 C/20 327 came with PVC valve covers, old style alternator mounting, and oil fill intake.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

Ok well somewhere in there they changed. I have never seen a 68 without the pcv in the covers but like everything with these trucks, they were the last to get the modern equipment. The cars got it first. My truck has the air injection as well. Instead of ditching it I just devained the pump, plugged it up on the ends but made look correct just not functional but I kept the stuff if it needed to be functional again. 66 67 smog stuff is so hard to find. I just couldn't get myself to throw it away.

Tonight I had an epiphany on a possible option for a GMC valve cover options. What if I were to take the GMC front fender emblem and use that on the valve cover. You could use it a few different ways. Thinking of either just using the GMC letters and removing the bottom half that says "v eight 1500" or just stick the whole thing on the valve cover. Then either paint the whole thing orange to make it look as one piece or leave it with the chrome sides and the orange middle of the letters.

You could make it custom to your truck.

What do you guys think? How to attach the emblem?

BTW - no comments on my fuel line... Tomorrow my Edelbrock banjo style hardline, filter and braided hose comes to remove the fire hazard.

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

Ill keep this updated once I get the guts to cut my emblems and figure out how to get them to attach to valve cover

Montierth 11-14-2018 01:21 PM

Re: Small block GMC valve covers?

What I'm thinking is i may shorten the studs on the back of the emblem then tap holes in the the face of the valve cover for the studs to go in and then weld the stud to the valve cover from the inside. Still trying to decide if I should:
1. Remove the bottom part of the emblem so it only says "GMC" and not "1500 V-eight" or leave it all
2. Paint the whole thing orange or only paint the GMC letters to match the valve covers and leave the sides of the GMC letters chrome

I have some old valve covers that I think I will play with tonight.
Any thoughts on whether these emblems can be welded? I think they are pot metal. May have to use JB WELD!

Well I got home today and tried to size up the emblem on some old valve covers I have. Looks like the emblem wont fit as it is on the cover with the oil fill. Thinking the only way for it to fit is to remove the letters and push them closer together.
