What is this for?

What is this bump on the drivers side inner fender for? I’m wanting to smooth this out. Do I need to keep it?

Re: What is this for?

Mine are so dinged up I thought that was just another dent. It doesn't seem to support anything, I guess I'm no help. Someone has to know.

Re: What is this for?

I always thought it was for added steering box clearance, but not sure.

Battery box support for right hand drive trucks?

Re: What is this for?

Left ti.... Nevermind

Auxiliary battery support I guess.

Re: What is this for?

It doesn’t look like the battery support on the passenger side so I didn’t think that was it

Maybe it is a way for a Chinese reproduction part manufacturer to avoid civil penalties from GM for trade infringement if it were identical to the original.

Maybe it's a tumor.

Maybe it's a spot that got wet on Gizmo like in Gremlins and it's going to pop out a baby Giz.

Are you and others who suggest battery tray looking at the bump circled in red?
I have no idea what it's for. My 1970 inner fender is different but has a similar bump. The bump on my inner fender looks like someone tried to drive a piece of 2 and 1/4 pipe through the inner fender.

From the looks of this post it's a conversational piece!:lol:

Re: What is this for?

The inner fenders might have been designed to be on a variety of vehicles outside the regular trucks and this might have included (for instance) military vehicles.
If it was used there it might have had a specific task that would never show up on the general pickups.
I don't know this for sure....but it is a possibility.

All good
Coley

Battery tray mount dual batteries, should be a dimple right in the center of the pad.

It's for stacking purposes after they were stamped in the factory. IDK!

ok now someone HAS to go put a jacket on, go outside with their coffee, dust the snow off and look down there and see whats underneath this monstrocity of a bump that mysteriously appeared on all of our trucks at the same time and figure out what its clearing for!!

Well I would do it, but alas no snow so I can’t check it out for you.

Re: What is this for?

Just a stab in the dark, but maybe it was a "clearance bump" for part of the assembly process. Somthing that was done in the wheell well like steering box asembly or front end alignment. IDK.

Re: What is this for?

I went outside and verified the bump appeared on my 1969 truck. Now that I know about it, I like it a lot. It has really grown on me.

Easy Arkansas...LOL

I think we have a mystery that needs to be solved! The people want to know. They do deserve to know!

I looked at it again and I'm not sure the work to remove it is worth it now that I know it will be such a great conversation piece.

Kewpie doll award to the contestant in the corner. If you don't have the battery tray, you can put a needle in the dimple for the angels to dance on.
