Wood Bed Conversion Kit from Mar-K. The Wood is Black Walnut with one coat of Walnut Stain, followed by 4 coats of Helmsman Outdoor Clear Gloss Polyurethane. Sanded to 220 grit prior to stain, sanded lightly to 220 between poly coats 1 and 2 and coats 2 and 3, then sanded to 400 grit between coats 3 and 4. Opted for the Polished stainless bolts and metal strips between the wood. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

That is some serious attention to detail...SUPER NICE!!!

I'm really digging the light reflections on the head panel from the skid strips. Those will look incredable at indoor shows with all the bright lights.

The dark wood is always nicer against a color like yellow. Man, that's nice. I've finished a bunch of walnut as a younger man and it takes work but is worth it.

wow that looks nice. I am doing a wood bed and I bought a Boyd tank. Do you know if the fill on the tank just lands between the rails or if i need to plan ahead. great looking truck

Re: Just Finished my Wood Bed

The filler was between the bed strips on my truck with the body tank.

It looks great but......... you gotta use a spar varnish for the clear if u want it to last. It's marine grade and has much more uv rays protection. Found mine on ebay. Expensive at approx. $33 a quart but will last much longer. That clear you used is "harry homeowner" grade.

Helsman is a Spar Urethane with UV Protector. Believe me, there is nothing harry homeowner on this entire build.

Hello. What did you use to put the sealer down? Brush? Roller? Did you buff it out or that 400 grit was enough? Thank you in advance!

this is a 3+ year old thread not sure if you will get a answer

I just finished my bed wood used some different products ill share with you I used a Mimwax oil stain named weathered oak and 5 coats of the oil based spar varnish applied with a sponge roller ( do not press hard on roller and stir the varnish DO NOT SHAKE so you don't get air bubbles...I sanded first coat lightly with 400 don't want to go through it and sand the stain then I used 400/ 600 the rest of the way ...this spar varnish will cause some yellowing the more coats you apply...I have another truck and bed that I will do when I finish this one and will try this product( last picture because it supposedly won't yellow) it is water based product if you are using a stain it must be water based also ....Brothers has some videos on the process too

I used Minwax water based spar urethane . 7 coats lightly scuffed between coats with 220 . Let the last coat cure for two weeks then wet sanded with 2000 paper and a light buff.

White oak that was milled locally no stain involved as I wanted the natural color to show through and the reason I used water based doesn’t affect the color . First three coats were done with a brush last few were done with a smooth finish small cabinet roller . Last coat was done with a foam brush .

Have to add this was the second go around with the wood . I had done it with Penofin marine oil . After a few months I took the wood back out planed it down a fraction and redid it

I’ve had plenty in the bed . Pop ups coolers and chairs for shows but I put the rubber non slip liner in it then a moving blanket. Found that with the glossy surface and polished strips everything shifted in the bed without the rubber . This is what I used
