Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I’m not sure gas prices will effect squarebody truck prices all that much because most here don’t daily drive em. There is still a chance we will see some downward pressure on truck prices though.
Summer is not even here yet, people will be out in droves due to pent up demand, hold on tight, gas will be going up….quite a bit I’m afraid (hope I’m wrong). Discuss… |
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I still daily drive my '88, but luckily I am only 2.5 miles from work. I sure hope we don't see those crazy prices we saw back in '08....

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
My 2019 Silverado with 5.3 gets 13.1 mpg average. Not much different than my old trucks.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I daily drive an 03 Chevy with a 6.0L. The fuel mileage is terrible. I might as well have a carbureted 454 in it. Most guys I know with trucks have them because that’s what they are into. Gas could go to $10 a gallon and they would still keep the truck. They would just buy a work car to go along with it.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
we are are already at $ 6.00 a gallon here in B.C.. They say will be 8.00 by the years end. I drive 80 chev truck stock 350 , a 454 blazer and a 89 jeep cherokee and they get bad mileage for a 6 cyl. but I do have a mountain bike

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I just picked up a 72 GMC a couple of months ago with a 454 in it and I'm sure driving it 60 miles a day to work probably won't be as frequent as my diesel 72.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
What cho talkin' bout, Willis?
My '87 gets around 20-21 mpg. Fuel injected V6, manual overdrive with 3.73 gears. K |
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Sure hope gas doesn't go through the roof... Though it won't stop me from daily driving them since these are all I own.
Kinda figure I could be like other guys my age who are into the new fangled late model stuff and have a $400-700 a month truck payment, not to mention insurance. The cost of paying for and repairing the newer trucks (in my opinion) outweighs the cost of keeping my 3 squares registered, insured, maintained and fueled. And if truck prices drop down some, I'm good with that... still have to locate a crew cab for a road trip truck. |

Shoot I'm over here trying to get my '79 ready for my son to drive because it does better than his daily '09 Ram at 9.5mpg.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
IMO, the use of a classic vehicle for most of us, if we already have one, we be the same, weekend fair weather toys, regardless of the price of fuel, as long as fuel is still available. But, with the already overpriced classic vehicles of the last decade or so, and the increase in fuel and everything else, younger buyers will be left out and it will start becoming a smaller hobby for the rich or affluent only. Less people, less demand, lower classic truck prices eventually.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
i got gas yesterday for my 77 k3500 crew cab with a ls2 6.0 it has dual tanks just one tank full 20 gallons was $75 it only gets 8 mpg.its my daily driver.. i also have a 79 k30 with the 6.0 it gets the same mileage i am on a fixed income and they are my only way to travel so these gas prices are putting a hurting on me .

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Being retired, my square only gets fired up for a Home Depot run. i get 10 mpg no matter whether the truck is loaded or empty, freeway or city, uphill or downhill, towing or not.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
From my perspective I have an Equinox to DD so until I go on my US Tour gas prices don't drive my truck habit.
Some things for comparison.. All of my 400/454/455 Olds, Buick, Chevy, Pontiac big cars got 12.5-13mpg. The 396 impala managed 13. 1980 C20 250 six 3OTT 3.43 235R80 16.5's. Dad got 15, I could get 17. 1971 Longhorn, stout 402 (would not run on 87 octane), TH400, unknown gear, 9.5mph, 9mpg with 20K trailer behind it. 1990 C10 4.3 700r4 3.08's regular cab long bed, 21-23mpg all day for 200,000+ miles. Flash forward.. 2017 K10 regular cab long bed, 5.3, 4l60e, 3.08 gears, 20mpg over the last 20k miles. Plus goes like heck when you mat it. Best so far, 1987 R10 6.2 diesel 700R4 3.08's, 23mpg, 26 if you drove 55 everywhere. What I figured out was the gas savings isn't what drives me, I just love my six bangers and my old trucks. |
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
None of my gas rigs get good MPG. My 72 gets 7.5mpg. My 57 and 86 are both dumps so no need to check them. Just gas them up. When I need to go somewhere I take the old jetta TDI. 260k on the clock and still getting low 40s for mileage.

Regardless of gas prices I dont see these trucks going down in price. The people who buy the high dollar trucks aren't worried about putting 100 in the tank. No if we go into a full fledged recession then all bets are off.

my crewcab is sitting right now, but not because of fuel prices.
when i do daily commute with it, i'm lucky, the shop is only a little over 4 miles from my house. which is good, cause the 454 drinks prodigious amounts of fuel... right now dailying the '90 stepper with a 350/5-spd and get about 12-14 mpg's |
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Gas jumped .30 a gallon today in the SW MS town I live in
|
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Up here in Ontario Canada, gas is the equivalent to $5.20/gallon. Detroit Michigan is average about $3.40/gallon.

I got diesel in my town yesterday at 2:15pm for $3.89. Their sign said $3.79. This morning I saw the sign says $4.29. What a crock.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I am in the middle of moving my household 7 hours away using a 1997 K2500 454 Suburban & 14' by 7' enclosed trailer! Each trip gets more expensive, last trip 3/4 of a tank cost over $115! That was before the recent "war" pricing. Truck by itself gets 15 mpg on the trip, with loaded trailer around 10. At least one more trip with the trailer - Year and a half ago it cost $75 if the tank were completely empty - today is $165, tomorrow will be worse. Still less expensive than hiring a mover!

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
This is why I sold my 90 Suburban back then b'cuz of the prices. I had just bought a house an it was costing me a little over a 100.00 to fill my fuel tank. Now I have my 91 and I'm looking at 150-160. Then my dually is another matter with the built 454. If I have to fill both tanks we're looking at over 250. Hell I just filled my Subaru last night and it wiped out 3 20 dollar bills. We're at over 5.50 here. It's been going up everyday. Last week it jumped .75 per in 5-6 days
|
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Jumped again to 5.56 from a couple of days ago
|
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Here in Ontario it's $1.849/liter(CDN) which is about $5.52/gallon(USD)and they're talking that by the end of the week it might be $2.00/liter which is just shy of $6/gallon.

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
Have to be cautious about getting political here, but things are this bad when they don't have to be. Time for the silent majority to stop waiting for someone to do something and to actively participate in the selection of our legislators / leaders. We owners of classic vehicles especially have a lot at stake.
I'm in no position to get too preachy ---- while I have done a bit in the past it wasn't nearly as much as it could have been. That's gonna change this upcoming election cycle (hence this post). I'm to the stage in life where I realize that regrets are among the worst things in life and to be avoided to the extreme. To that point I'm now trying to get our membership thinking about these things. There are still a lot of good people trying to stand up for us and they deserve our support. Apologies to the members and moderators if this post is out of place. It just seems appropriate in view of the thread topic and mood. |
Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
There has been a WORLD wide shortage of oil/gas not just here as the people in Canada have pointed out. Coming out of another recession did not help as well as Covid. Now we have what is going on in Europe to compound everything else. What is happing in Europe just highlights we should be thankful for where we live and the freedoms it affords us. I will be driving the 79 and enjoying it regardless of the price of gas. The Avalanche gets 14 MPG so might be drivng that more LOL. Life is to short and can change in a instant

While the Post is usually an openly right wing paper (I'm not a political person at all), this seemed like a fairly reasonable article about the situation and ways to makes some positive changes.

Just got gas here in central MA tonight... average is about $4.35gal for regular. Found a Sunoco for $4.17gal and filled up there. Diesel is running about $5.40gal.
My C30 service truck hits the road in April. Really hope it doesn't get too crazy because there's already about a month and a half of road calls scheduled for it around New England this spring. But, I suppose that's what the travel charge is for! |

Re: Let’s see how these rising gas prices affect the prices on our 12 MPG trucks….
I don't have anything that gets decent mpg's. But, I have things structured accordingly. I've had months where I would refill the tank on my '99 3/4 ton about every 6wks. Lately, I've been running out to visit w/my uncles widow so that's dropped it to every 2-3wks.
My '99 gets around 10-11 in the city. My dually gets 9-10 (downhill w/the wind). The Malibu got around 12. But, they're all paid for. A new truck payment + full coverage insurance + 1/2 the gas would still be way more expensive. |
