Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
2 Attachment(s)
WTB retaining nuts for my axillary gas tank for a 1970 CST/20. As you can see in the attachment, I damaged mine removing them.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I’m in the same boat. I think at least 2 need to be replaced. I may end up machining some. Let me know if you come up with any extras, and I’ll let you know if I decide to start marching them.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
`I needed a set a while back , hung a flag out on the forum and turns out another fellow needed some too. He had good original one and found a machine shop to make a few sets. Turned out real nice and the price was fair. If you run up against the wall I can contact him and get the machine shop info for you.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Knuckle-nurse,
Thanks for the potential lead. I will leave the WTB onb hear for a a week or two. If nothing pans out, I will need the information that you talk about. There may be demand for these. Notice the other post before yours. Thanks Rob |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I need some too. Also need the long bolt that they attach to.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Yeah I have a couple of the long bolts that are just rotten beyond repair as well. I was planning on threading some 7/16 round stock and welding the long flat washer to them.
I just got the tanks ready to go in so I need to figure these out in the next week or so. I have a couple of ideas. I’ll update you guys if they pan out, or if they don’t… |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I don’t need them but if it helps ill take a set because you never know when you need them
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I thought I was the only one who was crazy enough use my axillary tank...guess I was wrong.
Looks like we may need to get in touch with the guy who made the retaining nuts. |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Yeah I was shocked to log in and see someone else needing them as well today. I found a couple old threads on them but it’s been a while since I’ve seen anything posted on them.
I wasn’t originally planning on using them but since I built the 496, I’ve decided I want to have more than 100mi range, maybe they aren’t such a bad idea. I’m thinking I can turn the threaded part of the nut on my lathe and I’m going to attempt to press the washer part from 1/8” sheet using my hydraulic press. Plan B is just turn the flat part too. Either way I’ll weld them together. I’m 87% sure it will result in something useable. |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I believe those are 7/16x14- 12" carriage bolts with a special washer. I tried to find a supplier but no luck so far.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Yeah I couldn’t find them either. I don’t see why just welding that washer to the top wouldn’t get the job done though.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
That might be the only solution.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Might be a good idea to make them out of stainless.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
The nl2 tank is my 2nd favorite option I am shocked the aftermarket people have not reproduced this tank easy to add to a truck that didn’t get the option and looks good. My favorite option cab lights lol:chevy:

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
McMaster- Carr has 7/16- 14 x 12" stainless threaded rod. I ordered 3 ...will get some stainless domed caps machined up for the top side.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I took mine out and junked them. Thinking who would want these? LOL
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Base,
Pleas keep me posted if you are successful with making the retaining nuts. Thanks Rob |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Will do. I didn’t get a chance to make any of the barrel parts today but I do have a line on a pile of 2” dia 1/8” thick stamped metal discs I’ll get this week. Getting my press to do what I want to those is the only thing I’m worried about. The rest is pretty trivial even with my clapped out old lathe. Worst case is I can turn those discs on the lathe too.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
you posted on my thread regarding these retainers a couple days ago. It is clear my parts are not going to give up without self destruction. if you have time and ability, I could use 3 as well. Of course I would like to offer to compensate you for your time and material.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Any update

How many are looking for sets of the tank nuts? I had an OKC machine shop machine a set for me and for Knuckle Nurse. I thought they turned out great. If I can get an approximate count I will stop by the shop and see if he would make some more. I would connect you direct with the machine shop if he is willing. Here are what they look like.

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Sir,
Put me down for four. Thanks Rob |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Can you please put me down for 6. 3 for my tank and 3 for a possible mirror tank of the future.
Thank you |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I would take 4.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I too would be interested in 4.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
4 for me to
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Stopped by the machine shop today. Locked up tight. I think he may be on vacation. Will check back later.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Sounds good

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Okay, the machinist said he would make these for us. You can see what the tank nuts he made look like in post #21. I am impressed with his work. The company is
Advanced Machining Solutions (https://www.amsokc.com/) 4703 Enterprise Dr Oklahoma City, OK 73128 405-208-8737 It is a small company, I think the owner's name is Bruce. Seems like a good guy. If you need me to, I can take one of my originals to him for a pattern (if he does not recall how he made them). Good luck and go get 'em! Now to work on getting the long carriage bolts. |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Outstanding!!!!
Will call Bruce at the Machine Shop tomorrow. I greatly appreciate you setting this up. |

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Yes, talked to Bruce today. I told him how many I wanted. He took my email address and told me he would email me an invoice. Hopefully I will hear from him soon.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
I just spoke to Bruce as well.
Probably a good idea if anyone else wants these to call soon so he can run them all at once. |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
That is as fine a replacement as I have seen. I had an NOS Accessory install kit YEARS ago and I would have traded it for the SS version. Thanks to GYRINE for the tenacity to hang in to find these. Thanks, Dan

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Dan,
I learned a lot about these tanks from this wise gentlemen down at Moultrie. I hope to see you there this year. Thanks Rob |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Fellow folks who have axillary fuel tanks,
I just ordered four of the retaining nuts from the machine shop in Oklahoma City. Will post a picture when I receive them. v/r Rob |
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Good to hear Rob. I think you will be pleased with them. I left one of mine with Bruce today. He is going to create a drawing of the nut so he will have the design for future use.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Thank you for setting this up. Hopefully more folks will have an opportunity to re-hang their tanks.
|
Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Stopped by the machine shop today (I have no connection or relation to this shop other than he built a set of tank nuts for me). Picked up my tank nut. Bruce said he made a drawing of it so he could build more in the future. Also said he had a few guys order the tank nuts from him. Was glad to hear that, hoping he will continue to make them and maybe even be willing to make other custom parts. :two:

Re: Wtb axillary fuel tank retaining nuts
Anyone that has bought these want to give an idea of what he is charging for a set of 4?
