Coolant overflow bottle ideas

Anyone mount a small coolant recovery set up on the front of the radiator support? Pictures and ideas please. Thanks

What do you think about this? Think I would find a better mount than the hose clamps.

For my '63 Grand Prix I just used the existing windshield washer bottle.

This one (DeWitts) is similar to the one in howzzzit’s post. Welded the brackets to the existing reservoir tabs, then bolted to the radiator support.

Wow that looks great! Too fancy for my truck. I am thinking of mounting the Amazon tank next to the a/c receiver on the front sheet metal. I can bring the hose through the hole where the parking light wires come through on a 72.

I got a stainless tank from Speedway Motors. I choose the type that reciculates the coolant back into the radiator.

I am thinking about moving this to the driver's side behind the core support now that I have installed a new radiator. The old radiator in this photo sprung one too many leaks. My wife says it looks like a diamond in a goat's ass.

Thought about that. How will you route the tubing?

I had one of these in a '66 Mustang. I used a large "P" style cushioned clamp to mount it. It worked fine.

Where might I find such a clamp?

Amazon has those.

Here's a link below.
You just have to get the one for the diameter of your tank.

I put the Dorman in my 72. Bought it on Amazon. Use one existing hole and drilled another. used a 1/2" spacer for the offset in core support between holes

Do you have a pic of the front of your truck with the hood shut? I am curious if that tank is easily seen through the grille.

This is basically the style I use, mine is mounted on the drivers side between the grill and radiator support.......works for me!

If you want to make the tank black you could use Rit dye. I've dyed many white plastic items black using Rit liquid not the powder. Use the whole bottle and as little hot water as necessary. Let er soak and rinse. Wear gloves.

Sheepdip how did you route your tubing? I have an a/c condenser in the way or I would mount it on the passenger side. By the way I'm in Modesto. Can I send you a private message on another topic?

Sure can on the private message. My tubing comes back across the top of the radiator as I too have A/C stuff in the way. I'll get a pic tomorrow and post it.

PMd you. Do you think if I ran the tubing down under the shroud and across to the radiator cap it would be too low to suck the juice back?

I bought the same Dorman tank, but for some reason it would not fit behind my grille without a big hassle, so I mounted it on the firewall.

You 6 cylinder guys have sooo much room. I like the idea, but my firewall is full of factory a/c boxes.

My hose runs on top between the radiator support panel and the radiator. As long there are no leaks and the overflow bottle has coolant in it, it will suck it back.

I have the Camaro/Nova style. It tucks in between the passenger side front fender and the battery box. But then it's not in front of the radiator bulkhead. It is tucked away, though.

^^^, I have that OER tank in my 67 Camaro. The tank is for a 75 Nova.

The only reason I didn't use it in my 72 (post 15) is because charcoal canister is there so used a Dorman one on core support.

Don't have a pic nor the truck anymore. You could audition something (piece of paper) in the area I put the tank to see if you can see it through grill. If so, it was never a concern I had.

Anyone know the hose barb size for the Dorman 630-001? I cant find it and they definitely don't answer the phone.

I just used the hose from radiator that was on the truck that otherwise was open and just used that on the Dorman barb. Put it through one of the holes, large, that was already in the core support

OER 551448 tank with Dorman 82590 cap. Had to use an "L" bracket to support the bottom.

The 551448 tank looks like the best option on these.

Just keep in mind that I had to remove the battery tray (kind of a PITA) and then use an L bracket as a base for the tank.

The silicon hose I used is really nice. It's flexible and is fairly thick-walled. Rated to 460 degrees F. 3/8" ID x 9/16" OD.

Ended up using some Dorman 13400 hose clamps I found at Autozone, but they tend to deform because they are not spring steel, like OE. Pretty sad, this imported crap.

Re: Coolant overflow bottle ideas

Thank you for the information.

Only change I will make is using the coolant cap specified for a 1978-79 Nova, which is GM 371978. I think it looks more period correct than the later vented unit.

I didn't find the need for an L-bracket. The heavy end rests on the fender skirt and follows its slope.
[But, I totally agree on Imported Crap.]

I couldn't go behind the indentation in the fender w/o moving my fuse holder. And I couldn't do that because the red wire wasn't long enough. Also, I was able to use a hole that was already there.

I think I referenced your photo a couple of times when doing the job! Thanks.

For my recovery tank I used a stock w/s washer bottle& bracket. Mounted to P/S fender aft of the battery, run the hose to the radiator overflow vent. Pickup hose in the washer bottle works fine for the return line. Went with a closed system cap and keep it about 1/4 full when cold. Not very fancy and shiny but looks like it belongs there from GM

I used an overflow bottle from a Mitsubishi Eclipse. Wish I could remember which year it was from.
