just picked this 1971 cst Blazer from the Indian reservation here in Arizona. it never left the reservation untill now. it spent the last 25 years out of commission and parked in the arizona desert among a bunch tumbleweeds..
so im calling it the Tumbleweed.. it has the CST option as well as others
my plans are to leave it parked until i finish my 72 short super.
it has the spid. i first will get rid of the body lift.

Nice find! My '72 donor rig was as solid as that one appears. Would have been nice if my '70 had been that nice!

Should be drama free due to the apparent lack of rot..

Re: 1971 K5 CST Blazer ..... Tumbleweed

update.....
finally got the body back from blaster and powder coater full blast and powdercoated in epoxy primer . and i am very pleased. it looks really good except both rockers. but i figured on the rockers, thats why i thought ahead and bought a nos pair last year.
also had the frame blasted and powder coated. purchased all new leaf springs, u bolts ect. i went with a 2" tuff country. i sent both axles out to a pro in phoenix and he disassembled down to the empty housings, returned them to me for powder coating. i dropped them off and received them back in 2 days. amazing what cash money will get ya. lol. i returned them to builder and he is rebuilding them with most all nos parts. should get them back in a week.
the body is in Paint prison. the rockers and minor floor replacement to be performed.
i guess im moving along pretty good ! this came factory all white and im changing color to ???? might be orange? orange/white? blue?? havent made my mind yet?
pics to follow

you're making fast progress on this one. did you ever find the correct date code motor for your super ?

1970cstblazer 05-25-2024 11:27 AM

Re: 1971 K5 CST Blazer ..... Tumbleweed

That's consistent with the amount of rot damage my AZ tub had. It needed both inner rockers/outer edge of floors(not the rocker boxes), and the outer rocker panels themselves. The rest was perforation free.

That quarter panel eases my mind with the visible welds, my 70 has the same rough welding going on too, I thought the panel was replaced at some point in its life. You have a beautiful foundation to work with!

Really clean chassis and starting point. Did you go with the same white/white combo for paint? Looking forward to her release from prison.

Far, far better coverage than what the factory ever did. At best, they originally had primer with body color misted on the floors and rocker boxes, then heavy sound deadening schutz was applied to the wheel houses and rocker boxes.

Great job!

Re: 1971 K5 CST Blazer ..... Tumbleweed

UPDATE...... well after the red/orange paint was applied to firewall and under body, i decided to change color... yea.. PAINTER WAS VERY UPSET. but after i gave him more money he settled down. lol. .. i decided on Hugger orange. i really like the hugger orange! and at 68 yrs old this might be my last restoration? getting arthritis in hands and knees. And just want to Enjoy this one! the interior is going black with the scrolls inlay. all 3 seats are done! they were stripped down. blasted, and re-welded for strength in the right places, then the frames were powder coated gloss black, re assembled, all new foam, and re covered in new black covers. The factory seats were much more expensive to build than i budgeted for! OUCH, but im very pleased with the restoration of the factory seats. i found all seat factory brackets except the rear seat front tubular brackets. (still looking). i had the seat brackets powder coated gloss black. now a little more fine tuning on the body prep and then paint interior and exterior. painter promised done by Christmas! YEAH! well we will see?
