What Color Do I Paint My Engine?
My 72 Chevy with the 250ci 6 cyl needs a new head. I used 4 cans of oven cleaner to strip off the years of caked on grease on the engine and 4 speed tranny. I will finish cleaning tomarrow, then paint the engine the original factory engine color, and I'm not sure what color it originally was. Thanks, Don.

Engine color?
Hint....... |
Orange....the ONLY color a Chevy should be! :D
|
Okay, Okay, I knew that, but when I was stripping off grease, there appeared to be blue paint, and it totally confused me. I thought maybe the 6 bangers were painted a different color, much like GM did on their car engines from that period.
TXFirefighter, your engine totally looks fantastic :metal: |
Actually, you should see it now. It's pretty much all done with the Jet-Hot headers on it and carb and all of the accesories are detailed. That picture was a few weeks ago.
|
there is a gm blue that is availible, but for our vintage stuff they should be gm orange Tx Firefighter that BB is lookin damn sight nice. which truck is that one goin' it the step?
|
Yeah, it's going in this turd. I have a 71-72 grille for it. Billet grille insert, new chrome bumper....
It will not look this homely real soon. Also, Cragar SS wheels too. |
ORANGE!!!!!!!!!!!! or if its a driver only Black would be OK!!
|
Every Inline 6 I've ever seen (all 250's anyway) in our era of truck have been blue...
|
Oh no  We know have a debate on this topic, lol.
My truck was assembled in Atlanta GA if that matters. Could the motors made for the Canadian market been painted blue? |
Honestly, I've seen them both ways in 68-70 trucks that I've had.
|
I had a 71 Malibu w/ inline six, it was orange.
|
ive seen blue and orange....but to retract my earlier statement i think the blue might be correct for these year trucks.
|
My engine is green. I never liked Chevy Orange. bleh
|
how can you not like chevy orange? thats the signature color, take another look at tx firefighters motor, it looks like candy yummy, then add some chrome aaaahhhhh, lol I vote orange
|
my 67 and my 69 both were blue motors
|
all of the trucks i have had with 250's (3 of themall 72's) where blue

Different year...but my 70 w/250 was/is orange and came from the Atlanta plant. Sounds like.....take your choice on which one you like best and go with it....I don't think you can be wrong in this case!:D
|
Both my 70's had orange 250's. Then the stepside had an orange 327. The step side is gone and now my fleet side SWB has no motor in it and for the color you'll just have to wait for pics. Oh yea it gonna be a while.

my 250 was orange. The block, side covers and valve cover were all factory chevy orange
|
Daily driver's look better Black because after about a year the orange doesn't look so great. Just my opinion.

TX FireFighter
Tx Firefighter----What Bullet grill are you putting in it? Where did you find the grill for it?
Truck69:bowtie: |
To add fuel to the factory blue vs. orange debate....i knew a guy with a '71 GMC with the original 250....it was orange :bowtie:

Grabbed the wrong can off the shelf one day.
The Rebuild motor in my 79 K5 was Pontiac blue. I grabbed ford blue by mistake. Didn't notice till I was sittin on the core suport ready to touch it up. I knew it would irk the hell out of my buddy so I went with it. Couple weeks later I'm at his house shooting the sh!t on the drive. Tell him I got a miss. He's ASE pro so I'm always bugging him about stuid chit. He lifts the hood and slams it back closed. Tells me it runs like crap because somebody put a Ford engine in it. LOL. |
unless your name if Frank and u drive a Ford
ORANGE!!!! it is! |
I say black. I painted mine yellow and it is discolored over the years. It looks ugly.
|
Well I rinsed off the oven cleaner today, and I was not crazy. The motor in the 72 was originally painted chevy blue. I decided to drive the 9 hours each way to Tim Christians and buy the 250ci motor that was in his boys 68. If I remember correctly, he said that one was painted orange.
