Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
4 Attachment(s)
Good Morning everybody! I am seeking pics of Kustom crewcab and Suicide door hinge installations. I found the tread for the period coachworks crewcab conversions but would like to see custom hidden hinge installations. I am leaning towards an extended cab conversion, but it is still in the planning stages so I can change to crewcab with ease at this point.
I have a 2008 3500HD extended cab donar truck with some beautiful hinges, but they seem a little huge for the jamb area. Also I have picked up a set of VERY worn J10 hinges, that is causing me to second guess using them (I don't think one is even salvagable and another has a piece of wood carved to shape under the hinge itself and is probably in the same shape as the other one ). Thanks in advance! |
Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
No experience to share but if it were my build, the later model hinges would be my direction. Easier to source, less wear & tear, plus more crew-cab or extended cab possibilities to explore.

Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
I know this guy did suicide doors. Here is his build thread. I don't know where in the Thread he talks abut it.

Finally got the video edited and posted. Found using stock hinges would be virtually nonadjustable unless extending the rear cab sheetmetal after initially build. But would be easy. Another note the duramax hinges are tilted in just shy of 2*...very doable. Here's the vid: https://youtu.be/9g1wkvcPbg8 Have 2 more videos shot and might combine them to speed up the process and here is where we are at now! Will start a build thread I promise!

Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
Curious.... Have you reached out to the guys building these things for a living to see what they're using?

I have been slowly sneaking up on the rear doors of the extended cab. Took me so long for figuring out where to cut the inner panel and still have roll up rear windows if I want to in the future. In the end I chose just a straight cut which will mirror the rear of the inner panel. It is sad (to me) the 2 threads that helped me the most on this site for crew/suicide doors were both still born projects, one got cut up, the other ghosted...but I do appreciate what they posted it helped with a lot of decisions.
As the rear doors have taken so long to work out, I am going to go the easy route and use the j10 hinges. Turns out 3 are not so bad with just needing hinge pin kits after disassembly one I am going to try to fix with jb weld and crossed fingers! I choose this route rather than all the time, math and odd angles that the 2008 hinges would take. As I was cutting up the doors, out of the 8 doors I have, only the passenger door of the c60 was the only "restorable" door. One day I will post a build thread and an edited YT video, just having a hard time with the video editor. For now I will leave you with a picture dump |

Some progress, this is the hardest part (I hope) also had 5/8 fold over, should have been less the other door will be a little quicker to get it to this point. The shrinking and stretching is slow. So slow the parts for the suspension are starting to rust :(

Almost there for the outside skin. Tips for anyone contemplating this in the future, it would be easier (and lightning quicker i might add) to get a replacement door skin and a bead roller with a tipping die...I have way more time than money so I am doing it the slow way :waah:. Another is cut a few large access holes and make a simple jig inside the door to keep the distance between the inner and outer door skin...that is my next hurtle. And lastly, I think on the rear door windows, I am at most 1/2 inch too big to use the stock windows...if it wasn't such a bear to align the front and rear cab sections(i.e. had a better jig/dolly) I would cut it back apart and adjust the length.
Thanks for the continued support Scoti and forestb! WOW I just noticed I am going on 4 months! So sad I am slow..... Thanks! |
Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
If this level of progress is slow for four months, then my speed is even less than glacial! LOL
Awesome work! This is going to be really cool when you are done! |

Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges
I watched this video several times mostly because of interruptions at my place.
A sunroof from a SUV or mid 2000's 4 door car may be worth looking at for your application. Just a thought. Great build :metal: I like where you are going with this. |
Re: Post pic of suicide door or CUSTOM crewcab hinges

Another thing I have noticed is that if the picture is taller than it is wide it tends to flip the picture sideways. |

Fighting for getting 16th of an inch lower at this point, could leave it here or after another 1/8 inch or so down which is max without having to really retink the floor and upper mount of the inner fenders. Side to side is good, front to back is good, but would like to go lower! I got time as my 250 bottle I am changing from oxygen to C25 and both it and my 125 1962 Civil Defense {anybody remember nuclear drills in grade school?} bottle are out of cert and it will take a week the shop said (was willing to loose this cool bottle if I could get 250 bottle...but they said no way!)and will be a week......I don't know about you but I always run out of gas right when things are speeding up! Maybe God is doing this so I can slow down and rethink everything going forward.
On another note, if you want to copy my plan, if you go with a 2 to 2 1/2 inch shorter rear door the front wheel would center in the wheel well. QUESTION: Final trimming on the rear panel will have either a 1/2 to 3/4 spacing between the dmax and 66 corner panels ooorrrr shaped in a crescent on the edge of the dmax panel as is stock on the 2008. First way is stronger, the only reason not to is for not letting rain water drain and start rust in the veeeerrrry long future (I plan to pass this truck onto my kids once I absolutely can't drive anymore) I might be over thinking this..... |
