Try lotsa windex and a razor blade. You want to make sure to use alot of windex or you can scratch the glass. Best of luck.

67Fleetsidedream 01-26-2004 10:47 PM

yep windex or soapy water, box of razor blades and elbow grease is the best way to do it

70short/step 01-26-2004 10:48 PM

Try acetone or finger nail polish remover.

useRc10 01-26-2004 11:20 PM

scotchbrite and windex

CliffB 01-26-2004 11:32 PM

Be really careful about using an abrasive. Glass does scratch. I found out the hard way trying to clean a really dirty inside of a rear window of smokers residue and used a scotch brite pad with windex. My scrubbing was too much and permanently scratched the glass. (Luckily it was a 78 Fo#D Grenada) (Sorry my post doesn't agree useRc10, just my experience. It might be ok if you use it gently. I didn't.)

I gently use a razor blade to clean overspray on glass.

desertchevy 01-26-2004 11:37 PM

painted glass

Try some Pledge. I don't know what's in it but it works. Goof Off will also work.

useRc10 01-27-2004 12:00 AM

yeah, you have to be real light with the scotchbrite

I am not sure about the paint but the best glass cleaner on the market is Bon-Ami
Here is a link from a BMW message board that has some good reading.
Bon-Ami FAQ's
It is great for removing Rain X and a lot of the road rash from you windshield. It takes some elbow grease but worth it. It will also make you wipers slide better if they are in decent condition.

Maybe a cloth dipped in a bit of brake fluid? Always takes the paint right off when you DON'T want it to! :banghead: :D

racedvl 01-27-2004 12:20 AM

I like light steelwool and windex. :D

1972C10 01-27-2004 01:31 AM

Acetone or lacquer thinner Would work best

corn 01-27-2004 01:40 AM

razor blade & glass cleaner if its thick. 0000 steelwool & glass cleaner if its thin...corn

68chevytn 01-27-2004 02:03 AM

i work at a body shop and if we ever get overspray on glay, just take some cleaner and razorblade but be careful, you can easily scratch the glass

71-longbed 01-27-2004 05:00 AM

Carnu-be

krazy_texan 01-27-2004 09:00 AM

i have always used sos pads with pretty good success

Short-Fuse 72' 01-27-2004 09:52 AM

Goof-Off or Scotch bug/tar remover. I think they are basicly the same thing. Works real good.

billsbowtie 01-27-2004 12:31 PM

thanks guys for all the info.

dubie 01-27-2004 12:59 PM

Lacquer thinner will take it right off. Then just use regular window cleaner to take off any residue

trinic 01-27-2004 01:54 PM

i've always used steelwool

used it lots of time with not problems....

1972ChevyGuy 01-27-2004 06:07 PM

I don't know if its harmful to the glass but I put some brasso on a rag and it wipes right off. :)

Maximum Overdrive 01-27-2004 07:48 PM

I would have to agree with using lacquer thinner. That is what we use on any overspray on glass in the body shop.

GMC Jim 01-27-2004 10:38 PM

why not soften the paint with plain old paint-remover... no danger of scratching the glass !! Lacquer thinner works fine on enamenl based paints.... but not so good on lacquer paint.....

RICHARD MORGAN 01-27-2004 11:40 PM

GOTTA GO WITH THE HOT SOAPY WATER AND THE RAZOR BLADE !! HAS WORKED FOR ME IN THE PAST.

Hooter 01-28-2004 03:29 AM

you can buff out scratches on glass too, there was a huge scratch on the back window on my Monte, and I used a buffer with car polish to get it out

cableguy0 01-28-2004 12:12 PM

use brake clean and a paper towel it will take the paint right off then just use glass cleaner to get the residue off no scratches

GMCjunkie 01-28-2004 02:12 PM

I use some stuff called "Dons Mobile Glass Cream" Its a extremely fine abraisive cleaner for glass and I use it on my chrome too. Also takes surface rust off chrome. Something that works just as well, "Soft Scrub" cleaner, Then I use straight ammonia. Glass will be like new again. :)

71-longbed 06-23-2004 01:25 AM

my back and wing windows both have small water spots .... i've tried many things and nothing takes them out .... they are more stubborn then any other water spot i've ever dealt with :banghead: :banghead:

jimfulco 06-24-2004 01:36 AM

http://www.howtocleananything.com/hc...utowindows.htm

Scroll down almost halfway for spotted glass.

Russell 06-24-2004 01:46 AM

Anyone know of anything you can use to buff out welding spots? I was fixing holes in the roof of my 80 with some fluxcore (read splattery) wire in my MiG, and of course I started on the drivers side (I later bought a gas bottle and switched to a solid core wire) and wherever a splatter landed it melted a bit of glass away and left a small pit, and being flux core, its a LOT of little pits in my windsheild. I can still see out of it, but my wiper is useless now, and I get a lot more glare at night.

ChevLoRay 06-24-2004 08:50 AM

I had some over spray on my '81 El Camino. A glass shop told me that 4-ought (0000) steel wool would do the job. It did. Then, any good glass cleaner.

Any grade of steel wool that is coarser than 0000, may scratch the glass.
