Eric's 1966 Turbo 6.0 build

New member here. Decided that if I were to start a build thread I could actually keep track of the project. wanted to keep the original body and just swap my new drivetrain in, but with all the rot looks like it just got more interesting.

Re: Eric's 1966 Turbo 6.0 build
Looking forward to the build! Keeping it injected or doing a carb/turbo build?

drove it awhile last summer while working on the lq4. :stock crank polished, forged rods, .10 over pistons, head studs, PRC heads with upgraded springs and stainless valves.. Truck intake with 80lb deka injectors. PLan is to mate it to a 4l80e, using the stock ECM and a single turbo for some fairly reasonable street action.

Stripping it down, I realized the cab and fenders are way worse than I first thought. So I built a quick cab dolly and now starts the least fun part!

No body guy this week so I got to work on the frame. Stitch welded Captnfab's power steering bracket on. Install Was beyond easy with the template. Definitely happy with the purchase! Removed the 3 speed crossmember and wire-wheeled the frame. Used Eastwood rust encapsulator in a cheap HVLP gun.

Some slow but steady progress. Started grinding the spotwelds on the in cab tank mounts. Passenger rocker is welded in as well as the floor/ upper firewall patch

Decided to test fit the engine and trans. I'll be building a trans crossmember for the 4l80e, but need to situate the engine mounts first. The engine sits too low to use the Log turbo manifold so I will need to address that issue first.

Work has had me slammed, so progress has been slow. Cab is ready for sandblast, inner fenders and fenders almost perfect. Before any body work starts I need to mock up the Hot side, turbo and components, intercooler and piping. plan is to run the exhaust through the inner fender and down the framerail to the back.

Used an Entropy radiator, HAd to move the bottom mounts inward 2 inches each to avoid the trans cooler fittings ( Made to fit right?) And modify the hold down slightly. Overall happy with the design, hope it cools as good as it looks. Guessed and ordered an intercooler, but it's too big. Heading to Summit Racing today to exchange it for one a few inches smaller.

Nice start. Love the turbo stuff. Cant wait to see more.

SLOW progress lately but I got a smaller intercooler and re purposed the radiator support braces and made a mount for it. I had to cut and box some of the support but it will look like it was meant to be there. Spent way too much time getting the aftermarket panels to fit.Attachment 1669742

SO turbos are heavy so I came up with a contraption to position it while I figured out manifold angles. Once I was happy I tacked the manifold and 74 flange in place

SO I have about 3 weeks of tig welding experience, so it's like a trial by fire here. Some undercut and lack of filler, but for the most part it's coming out ok. I used a log manifold from Fahler Speed that has everything set except the last cylinder and upright for the turbo. This let me choose exactly where I wanted it mounted.

Re: Eric's 1966 Turbo 6.0 build
Do you have a tig finger? When welding tube I always use one and prop my torch hand on the tube. Makes it much easier to keep the torch angle correct. What size turbo do you have?
