HEI convert c-60
Here's one thats a little out there. I have a 75 C-60 that I'm trying to convert to HEI (it's a Grain Truck). It has the stock 2 bbl, with a ?governor? on the passenger's side. It had a hose going to a tee on the back side of the distributor. Anyway, I removed the old points style distributor, the real tall ones like came in 2-ton trucks, and dropped in the HEI, ran a power wire from the ign circuit in the fusebox, and she hit like a champ. Idle is near perfect, so I put the timing light on it and tweaked it where I wanted it, and connected the vacuum advance line to the governor. Still ran fine until you touch the gas pedal, and it dies immediately. Remove the vacuum line, and all is well. Any ideas where I should get vacuum for the new HEI, or what I need to do with the line from the governor? I'm at a loss over this one.

Re: HEI convert c-60
Surely someone has worked on one of these?

Re: HEI convert c-60
Have you tried to pick up the vacuum off of the intake manifold? It would not be ported vacuum, but it would let you know if something else is wrong.
The Hei in my '77 6500 GMC with 427 does not have vacuum advance. Danny |
Re: HEI convert c-60
You dont necessarily have to run the vacuum advance. You can bump your timing up a few degrees and compensate for it. Wont hurt a thing.

Re: HEI convert c-60
You may have a bad wire in the HEI that's giving you trouble when the vacuum advance pulls on the magnetic pick up.

Re: HEI convert c-60
Thanks for all the help. I think the problem is with the governor, not the new HEI. Does it need to be connected to vacuum, or atmosphere?

Re: HEI convert c-60
I agree with srr. I'd look for a broken wire inside the HEI. When the advance pulls the mechanism, the wire separates.
