' 99 Tahoe Oil Change

Just got done changing the oil on our ' 99 Tahoe and talk about PITA engineering !! No problem with the pan/bolt, 5.7 (350 CI) motor but the oil filter postioning leaves a lot to be desired. Tahoe is a 4WD sitting on 265/75/16's (which are to small and will be changed when they wear out to a decent size for a 4WD vehicle) but with the juice can size oil filter about 3" above the transfer case and sitting at a 45 degree angle I can't say much about GM engineering here. What happened to the 30 plus years of the filter hanging straight down on the driver's side of the block, what was wrong with that? I've been changing oil on my own vehicle's for close to (never mind, just a long time now) and this thing is a pain. Front drive shaft u-joints should never have a rust problem for sure. Just venting I guess, I like the vehicle but changing the oil is not what it used to be. :bs:

I never had any trouble changing the oil on my 1997 or 1998 5.7l trucks :D

That's weird! I've changed the oil in a 96 Z71 and a 00 Z71 (5.7L and 5.3L) trucks and the filter hangs straight down. I wonder why the tahoe would be different?

Not sure of the reason why but sure does s**k big time when it comes time to change oil/filter. Guess maybe perhaps the shorter wheel base on the Tahoe vrs. pickups?

All of the 3/4 and 1 ton pickups that we service for the county here have the filter above the driveshaft. I never had any problem changing them, but you are right about the u-joints staying well lubricated...

That is the older body style "old school" Tahoe body style. I very successfully removed many a delco filter with my trusty Snap-On filter socket and a swivel headed ratchet. You ought to see how the newer Heavy duty truck models drain onto exhaust and splatter everywhere. Now that it has been mentioned, I have never had to replace a u-joint in that position.

The distance of the engine/trans/transfer case to the front diff doesn't change no matter what the wheelbase.

2wds have the larger diameter filter hanging straight down while the 4x4s have the smaller one and the adapter that makes it 90 degree to clear the drive shaft. You can take the adapter off and use a short larger diameter filter, but not if you want to keep the external cooler.

Just put a piece of card board on the shaft so that the oil drains into your pan.

and 99 Tahoe stuff should really go in the 88-98 section.

My '99 Z71 with the 5.3 hangs straight down also. It is an extended cab short box, but that shouldn't make a difference. Mine is the newer body style. Maybe a difference there. Just a thought

Hey 99-2dr, May I ask why '99 Tahoe should go to the 88-98 section?
Just curious. Have a good one.

Totally different. According to the post his truck does fit here by date but you guys are correct, he would have much more info pertaining to his Tahoe on the earlier Gen post. The Tahoes and trucks come in both forms in 99.
