My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

Im finally going to sit down and make a thread. It will probably be a while before it is show quality if it ever makes it that far.So heres the story behind the Great Pumpkin. This past summer it was traded in at the dealership where I work at.I immediately wanted to buy it but no,it was goin to go on Ebay. Some guy up in NH I believe bought it and supposedly got it home and his wife did not approve of it.He wanted to get out of the deal. The dealership was goin to give him back 1500 bucks plus the truck to keep it.He didn't want to.It was shipped back to our dealership where it sat for another couple weeks waiting to go back on Ebay.I again told them I wanted it.Finally after begging and flashing cash in there face,it was mine.September 5th I took delivery on it.I did a little research on it and found it to originally have a inline 6 in it like many others. One of it's many PO's had installed a 86 SBC 350 in it while retaining the 3spd on the tree. The last state it was registered in was TN.Look familiar anyone?Let me know.Anyway back on subject. It is all drum brakes(for now). The only thing I did to it was make it somewhat safe to take to my first hotrod weekend in Ocean City Md back in Oct of 07.Lovely time. From there,I was hooked.I seen so many 60-66 Chevy and GMC trucks it was awesome.
Now for the good stuff

Now my little touches. It now has a Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb,Edelbrock Performer EPS Manifold,Edelbrock Performer Cam and lifter set,Edelbrock Chrome Valve Covers,Edelbrock Chrome Air Cleaner,Dynomax Longtube headers,Comp Cams Double Roller timing chain,5 inch Sunpro tach,Sunpro triple gauges, and a fuzzy snake on the dash lol. There is still tons of work under the hood that needs to be done.Next month may be the beginning of the manual to auto conversion.I have a built TH350 that will be installed as well as a Hurst floor shifter.

Hey 1966GMC, it sounds like you're going to auto and I'm trying to return back to manual which my 64 sub was built with (from a TH400). Any chance you want to sell the clutch pedal once you remove it? My original was lost years ago by the PO.

Thanks,
Greg

Nice looking truck. I worked at a dealership and know how those deals go. They do not want to see anyone that works for them get a good deal. Keep up the good work.

She was a ebay star twice. It's really not in too bad of shape.I also just purchased a tailgate off of a 66 Chevy for 75 bucks. The guy gave me a hellava deal.It has a few tiny dings and very minute amounts of surface rust

Dude I swear to all that is living, when I bought the truck,it had white vinyl flames goin from the front wheel wells to the rear wells and a big T on both sides.I wish I had pics of it.I may see if the Ebay guy here at work still has the pics saved and have them emailed to me

Re: My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

Well I spoke to a engine and trans builder and told him my engine combo and he suggested I buy a 2200 stall. So I did.I bought a ACC Boss Hog 2200 stall converter.I also ordered a auto cross member from a site vendor called The truck and car shop I believe.$74 bucks shiiped for the x-member.Not too bad considering Brothers wanted $99+shipping.

Re: My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

Well my trans crossmember came in today :)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...rossmember.jpg
That thing looks kinda small though. It's for a 63-72 with a th350,400 and 700r conversion.I will find out soon enough.I finally got everything from the cam swap sorted out this week.I got the valves adjusted, intake re-sealed and new sunpro oil, temp and voltage gauges installed and hooked up.I cant wait to get this trans swap started

Re: My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

I have the th350 installed......finally.What a pain in the arse to get the old crossmember out.Thank god for torches :)
I also had to replace the speedo cable because the old one was too short. Now I need to locate a slip yoke for a th350.I was told that the old yoke would slip into the th350 but ney,it didn't.I found some new ones for 80 bucks but as of now im trying to locate a used one.All I need to do is swap yokes, install the floor shifter and remove the clutch pedal and hopefully I will be in business.I will take pics tomorrow

Re: My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

Well, the engine came out today.I believe I spun a cam bearing. So now it's new engine time while I rebuild the one that came out.Im tired of taking steps backwards :(

Re: My 66' SWB Fleet build thread

I finally got the engine to the machine shop today. After a nice little tear down,I found that the engine has already been bored .040 over :)
The cylinders have very little wear.I noticed that the oil passage in the cam bearing does not line up with the oil galley in the block.Stuff happens I guess.
Im goin to have new cam bearings installed, block cooked and crank checked. After the machinist calls me tomorrow,I will be buying the main and rod bearings.I already have purchased a new HV oil pump, shaft and pick-up tube, new ring set, full gasket set,a Comp Cam 262 cam and valve springs, fuel pump and other goodies.Hope to have it back from the shop this week so I can start the rebuild.

hey what length is your bed compaired to a lwb as far as fender placement. Is the section behind the wheel well the same lenght as a lwb, and is the 2 feet is taken out of the front section of the bed?
