Step side wood bed question
2 Attachment(s)
The 64 step side i just bought has a piece of checker plate instead of wood. All the cross frame is there ,We are planning to put wood kit back in. Question is on the box sides is angle iron (think original ) .Does the narrow outside wood sit on this then the polished chrome angle goes on top or does that need to be removed ?Have done fleet side but never step side .No holes in angle that is there now. Thanks in advance. Do not have pics of box at this moment.

Re: Step side wood bed question
I am no Help on your Question about the angle.
Here's a TTT for you and a link to GMC Paul's info on Bed wood Dimensions. Link: https://gmcpauls.com/47-72_BedWood_Info.htm |
Re: Step side wood bed question
Can you get us a picture of what you're working with? Just from the initial read, with the steel floor being installed previously, could be some not stock stuff going on as well.

Re: Step side wood bed question
I believe there is only shaped angle on the bed sides that slip over the side boards. The boards are sandwiched between that and the cross sills.

Re: Step side wood bed question
Will try get a picture. The angle is on the box sides. My question is does that come off when you use the chrome box strips ? Some on here show a chrome angle along the side others show black steel.

Re: Step side wood bed question
The bed on my truck was all original, and I had to drill out the welds holding what was left of the angle strips.
I chose to buy just plain repop steel strips, as I knew I would be spraying Raptor on all the bed metal. I imagine you'd have to bolt the chrome ones on. |
Re: Step side wood bed question
Mine's a fleetside so no separate strips. Some of mine were rusted, so I made new strips and screwed them in place when I rebuilt the bed. Worked perfectly.

Re: Step side wood bed question
If there are no holes in it. then it is probably not original. It should bolt together just like the fleetside only without the wheel wells. When you say chrome strips are you talking about the ones that they sell to cover the old strips or the kind that are made to be welded onto the sides of the box? There are two types. These trucks never came with the type that cover the old strips. Is the L shaped peace that you are talking about have the same little humps along the edge like the center strips do? If they don't then they are not original.

Re: Step side wood bed question
Ok so wood goes goes under the wheel wells on a fleet side .Does wood go under the angle or sit on it..The chrome strips that go over the angle do you remove the original or go over it. Thanks

Re: Step side wood bed question
The wool goes in between the cross sills and under the angle.

The chrome or stainless angles are just covers. The original angels are spot welded to the bed sides and these sit on top. The wood is under both pieces.

Re: Step side wood bed question
Thanks twed I may need to check mine further .The checker plate was on top of the angle and the cross ribs are welded to the box sides.

Re: Step side wood bed question
It sounds like there were some modifications done in order to install that diamond plate.
