Air compressor upgrade

I need to upgrade my air compressor, im looking at an upright, 2 stage, 5-7.5 hp (or bigger), 60-80 gal tank, 230 volt single phase and was wondering what brand you guys are running? Will be running air tools, sand blaster, etc.

I bought a 2 stage 60 gallon one at Lowes , it does all I need and more . Less than $1000 out the door .

I have a Saylor-Beall VT-735-80
Nobody listens but I'd suggest a 1725RPM motor. If you check you'll find they're about double the size of 3450RPM ones.

I have been looking at getting a new one with some more cfm for the new shop. Been looking at 6HP 80 gallon 2 stage. So far Ingersol rand and Quincy look like good candidates. So how big a sand blaster are you looking at? They can burn through a lot of air.

Re: Air compressor upgrade

My current compressor puts out roughly 10 cfm @ 90psi and the specs on the blaster require 12-13 cfm, doesnt seem like alot of difference but we had the same blaster in the machine shop and a very large compressor to run the shop and had no problems what so ever.

Re: Air compressor upgrade

So I would look for a compressor that will give you 15 or 16 cfm at the pressure you need for the blaster. The pipe the shop to carry that volume you need to the blaster.

Re: Air compressor upgrade

I bought a new compressor about a year ago. I debated and looked at IR, Quincy, etc. I finally decided on a Champion 7.5HP 80 Gallon 230v 23.9CFM.

I bought it from TP Tools through ebay. Ebay was having a 24 months with 0% interest if you have (or sign up) for paypal credit. It was not the cheapest around, but I love it and am happy with what I bought and I do love the 0% interest.

I use it almost everyday. I don't think it is that loud and I have enough air that I never have to stop working to let the compressor catch up which includes media blasting. The picture at the bottom is the day I received it before I hooked it up.

These are the specs on it:

Features pre-wired magnetic starter and higher amperage motor for long operating hours.

MODEL 8550-70DS SPECS:

7.5 HP, 36 amp motor
2-stage
80-gallon vertical ASME tank
Cast-iron pump, cylinders, crankcase, and head
23.9 cfm @ 125 psi
Maximum air pressure 175 psi
1035 pump RPM
Splash lubrication
230 volt, 1 phase
Mounted & pre-wired magnetic starter
76"H, 33"W, 26-5/8"D, ship wt: 635 lbs
2-year pump/1-year unit warranty (service centers nationwide)

i just scored this here and the box and blaster do good by them self . but the compressor is 16.8cfm @175 psi and it can run out a bit before shut off happens .

blasting or long run air tools like body d/a sanders or air sander boards EAT air up and always want more .

go big or go home i say for a QUALITY unit . and the resale later will pay off if you ever need to sell it .

and fyi i have 3 I.R. units now . and thats just cause its what found me in deals . and the older REAL quality I.R. units have cast in them on the front cover made in the USA . and there more re-buildable than the newer black pumps .

as said 1725 rpm = much more quiet operation unit . and they tend to pull a few less amps over the 3450 rpm units .

here is my units i have built from parts and rubber mounted them to cut down harmonic vibrations .

my big I.R. 2545 pump with 5hp 1725 rpm 220 motor 19.0 cfm @ 175 psi
my little I.R. 234 pump with 5hp 3450 rpm 220 motor 9.0 cfm @ 175 psi used a motor i had on this one .
new to me SUPER clean 2420n5 pump unit ALL factory I.R. 16.8 cfm @175 psi 1725 5hp motor and mag start .
my new build will be getting this 120 gal tank and my 1st compressor parts to make it whole again like it left the factory for the most part . its a factory 2545 unit that was 10hp motor 3phase 480 volt 36 cfm @175 as it left the factory unit some one started to cut it up for scrap .

I love my Quincy QT54. Purchased mine from the local Rural King during a store-wide 20% off sale. One of the best purchases I've ever made as far as my work shop is concerned.
