6.0 liter truck engine

I'm thinking of building a 6.0 liter LS style engine and I'm wondering how easy it is to find them. Does anyone know if these are readily available at junk yards and how much a complete pull out engine like this would cost?

Thanks

I think it depends on your area. In some arear they seem to be easy to find and reasonably priced. In my area they don't seem to be very easy to find at a reasonable price. But then again it probably isn't likely to find an Gen III small block these days for the same price that you can get a Gen I.

It may or may not have a listing near you, but at least you could see what the ballpark price is. It looked to me like 600+ was about what you'd pay for a running engine...that probably does not include the harness etc, and might be high mileage.

I had the same thoughts about the LS motor, I was told to look on ebay. I found a couple "buy it now" price of $500 to $875

LKQ.com

theirs come with a 6 month warranty and they are ussually near you. I got a 5.3 for 1000.00 very low mileage

Re: 6.0 liter truck engine

Thanks guys. The milage doesn't matter because I'm going to tear it down and build it for a little more horse power than stock. There's an LKQ in Vegas near me but they want 1350.00 for a 6.0 with no accessories, ECU or harness. I was hoping I could find something around 7 or 800 but if I can't I might go a different direction. On with the search.

Re: 6.0 liter truck engine

Craigslist is your friend. I have seen them for 600-700 (50-70K miles) without harness, with harness goes for 1000-1200.

I wouldn't worry to much about a complete rebuild, unless you find what I bought (6.0L short block, hi mileage 200.00) :metal:

Buy a 50-70K mileage one (1200.00), get some L92 heads for it (1200.00), throw in a decent cam and springs (GM HOT Cam or slightly larger)(500.00), retune the ecm(350.00-500.00) and marvel at the 500+ HP you have made for under 3500 bux.

This is sort of what I am doing with a 5.3 (minus the L92 heads) and I should have 400-420 horse. I bought the complete engine with accessories for 600.00, another 50.00 for a barely used cam from a guy I work with. All I need is head gaskets, head bolts and time to reassemble. In fact, I am actually holding off putting it in my truck until I get the brakes and suspension redone. The wore out 305 V-8 putts along just fine for the way it stops.

As far as my 6.0L, I might build it as a stroker or I might sell it and use the money towards re-sleeving an LS1 block I have to make it a 4.125" bore, then stroke it. Just keep your eyes open. I got the LS1 for under 100.00 because it spun a rod bearing. I got the entire long block, sold the heads for more than I paid for the whole thing. The sleeves are bad because the po left the engine out side and they corroded pretty bad, dummy.

All aluminum 427 LS series=awesome.

Check out my site (in my signature) and go to the links section for some good LSX engine links and info.

I have been looking at craigslist for over a year, what I have found is you dont see many 6.0l engines for sale, I used to see a bunch of 5.3's with varying mileage and a few 4.8's, but not any more, just looked in DFW and none. I just had to buy another engine for my project cuz I bought one from CL and it turned out to be bad, glad I got it from a Yard with a 6 month warranty.

OK, I was proved to be a liar, not intentional mind you,

here is a guy ( I think it is a bone yard) that has the 5.3's and an alum l33 5.3.

Another thing is how you search. I don't even bother to search 6.0L, LQ4 or LQ9.

Instead I look for the trucks, suv's and vans that they come in being parted out.

There is also a guy in Mansfield that list the engines from time to time. He has a ton of them and gets 350-500 for a 5.3, 800-1000 for LQ4 and 1200-1400 for LQ9. I don't have his contact info, but a friend of mine might. I will call and check.

Well, I can't find the guys info, but he goes by Motorman and is definately in Mansfield, TX. I will keep my eyes open for his ads.

around here you'll pay about a grand for a 100,000 mile 6.0L with no harness. i paid $450 for a 04 5.3 with 67,000 miles and ecu. i also learned that the H.O. 5.3's have aluminum blocks and 799 casting heads that are the same as the early Z06's

Re: 6.0 liter truck engine

I paid $2000 for a complete 2006 5.3l with 30,000 miles and a 4l60e tranny. I found it on craigslist. I got the ECU, harness (properly disconnected), TAC module, pedal, all accessories. It was missing some hardware which I ended up shelling out $50 for. For a long time I searched for a complete truck, but decided against it in the end.

They are out there and prices vary with year and mileage. The LQ9 is a bit more than the LQ4. Here is CA they are sought after and snapped up pretty quick. To give you an idea. I purchased a complete 2003 LQ9/4L80E combo for $2800 out of SoCal in Jan 2009.

Re: 6.0 liter truck engine

Wow, great info everyone. There has been a change of plans, sort of. I'm still going with a 6.0 liter but I found an LS2 block for $500 that I'm going to build up. Plenty of power potential and almost a hundred pounds less since it's an aluminum block. I'll eventually put a set of L92 heads on it and with a decent cam it will push out 400hp and 400tq. I love the idea of saving the weight in the front end and everything I want is compatible with this block. I've got a guy in AZ that will build a custom harness for $400 and I can come up with an ECU pretty easy. Now, lets all watch while my bank account drains.

Well I don't know where all those other guys find them for the $600 I have been looking on CL here in Ga and a complete LS1 with trans & acc. they are usually asking about $2500 to $3000. I got lucky and after looking for 2 year I finally found one a 6.0L iron block and head with accessories and ecm with 140,000 miles, but it had a cut harness it was out of a 2500 HD truck for $1000 so I'm happy if I got to rebuild it then so be it but I got want I was looking to pickup

before I found mine on CL I was going to pick up one from the place in GA http://www.ottingautoparts.com/
They specialize in drop outs and know how to do in about an hour I have read many reviews about this Salvage yard and all have been positive. When they do a pull nothing is cut you get everything in tack. anyway thought that I throw this in

Another option depending on your area is salvage auctions, i bought a 02 c2500 write off with a rear end hit for 700 bucks. was sure nice having the whole truck on the yard, lots of little things that are nice to pull off.

Thanks, I'll keep a look out and see what pops up. It seems like everything in the yards around here is older and pre-LS series engines.

Good info. I love LS1tech. The classified section is crazy. People are listing by the minute. Tons of LS stuff.
