Rebuilt Motor, Ticking sound
 

Fresh rebuilt 350, has a ticking sound pinpointed to where the yellow lines are

got my mechanic stopping by tomorrow

doesnt sound like a metal tick, sounds like a plastic ticking

anyone have any ideas to check

Take the breather off the valve cover to see/hear if it gets louder.

Most likely it just needs s rocker arm adjustment.

Good thoughts. Could be from the wear of breaking in or possibly the self locking nut could have lost some of its holding power if it's been on and off a few times.

Make sure the intake crossover passage part of the intake gasket sealed properly or that a couple of intake manifold bolts didn't back out. Easy to forget you have an exhaust flow there.

Maybe the distributor cap is off kilter. It's happened to me.

Got the truck to my buddies shop Thursday nite

Today got to his shop and he had already checked the rockers, valves, pushrods and cam, lol

i had bought a new cap and rotor, took the cap off and the button on bottom of cap was laying on top of the rotor, rotor tip was worn down and cap had burn spots on it
got it all back together and no noise, little carb adjustment and she runs great

At least I'm not the only one who's ruined a cap and rotor. It's nice when the parts are cheaper ones though.

ticking is back, but im pretty sure its the exhaust manifold gasket, using a stick as a sounding tool, if i hold the stick on the motor above the center of the manifold, it sounds good, no noise, if i put the stick on the manifold center, definately a tick

well , went on vacation for a week, dropped truck off at shop, found number 8 lobe on cam is worn, so engine is coming out again, going to check rods and mains, obviously new cam and lifters,
was a Mellings 22107, basically an rv cam
i wont go back to same cam
anyone have a better or at least different manufacturer

couple good things, took filter off , no chunks, only a little silver in oil, so were thinking it just wore
Machine shop is working with me on parts

ill know more on Monday

Bummer, I wish it would have been "cheap and easy". I have a Melling RV cam too. At least the machine shop is working it out with you.

Well , some good news , mains and rods are still good. So ordered a new cam. Went with a Howard’s brand only because they offer a 5 year no questions warranty. Paid the difference which I had no problem with. Machine Shop covered all the gaskets and oil and gave me credit towards new cam. So. Hopefully this weekend

Sounds like a good machine shop you should stick with them. A lot of shops would have tried to weisel out of that and left you holding the bag.

Cam lobes are only splash fed so the new engine, on first fire up MUST be allowed to run at around 1800 to 2000 rpm for at least ten minutes.....

It must be full of oil, water and have all belts etc in place....do not allow the new engine to idle.

Are you assembling the engine? If you are you must use a good quality cam lobe lube on both the lobes and the bottom of the lifters.

The oil in your engine MUST contain a high level of Zinc to prevent cam lobe destruction....modern oils do not contain Zinc as it pollutes the catalytic convertors on later model cars.

As the engine had silver traces through it I assume its been hot tanked with all the gallery plugs removed?

Maybe you can talk the machine shop into throwing a roller cam in her and never worry about the correct ZDDP or break in periods.

Maybe too late now, but make sure the machine shop runs a hone through the lifter bores. Every now and then the bores get a little tight and do not allow the lifter to spin properly

yes the motor has been gone through again, everything is still good, got her back together and hopefully firing up tomorrow, yes to zinc additive and am using Valvoline VR1, yes to running at least 20 minutes on breakin at 2000 rpm,

hopefully this one does good, if not ive got the 5.7 vortec on the stand

well, another bad update
6 minutes into breakin, #4 exhaust lobe wore

already talked to Haward;s and im probably going to go roller upgrade

not a happy camper

What oil were you using during break in?

Have you checked the valve spring installed pressure and checked for coil bind?

I assume you used new lifters on the new camshaft.

Was the block hot tanked and pressure cleaned out including the oil galleries with the gallery plugs removed?

Moving to a roller cam may still fail if these essential steps are skipped....

ticking is a collapsed lifter
yes to all questions about having block checked
still going with roller cam and lifters this time
call Howards tomorrow and see what they will cover Parts wise

Collapsed lifter from new? Nice....leaves a sour taste in your mouth.

Go the roller cam and lifter route....

I usually build Vortec SBC now, its been at least a year since I built a flat cam engine....

Good luck....make sure the kit you buy has the anti rotation pieces for the rollers.

I wonder if everybody is just making junk parts now or what. Almost everything I drive is flat tappet engines but they were all assembled over 5 years ago. The last cam I bought was the Summit $100 special and still working like a champ.
