The Tiki Sea 10
 

Hey All... picked up this '65 in Northern California that had been sitting in a garage for close to two decades (50 miles from the plant it was made). After getting it painted, unfortunately, the PO passed away and the truck was handed down to family members; sitting in the garage for that time. They wanted the truck to see the light of day again... they wanted to pass it along to someone that would show it some love. They were an awesome family and the truck reminds me of my grandfather's truck... so... let's show it some lovin'

Got it back to the shop to get a game plan together. Decided it should be a 'Freeway Flyer' that appears old but everything underneath would be modern technology, a gentleman's pro touring truck. The interior should appear as a time capsule from that period of time. In the 'concept' department, it would be a time capsule if a Chevy C10 and a Woody Wagon collided - a surf wagon/truck type of thing...The Tiki Sea 10.

Currently, roughing in all of the mods to stay on schedule to send body for bodywork/paint. While the tin is at the painter, will be finishing up all of the chassis CAD work, sending to laser and (hopefully) installing. We'll see where this all goes since we rarely stay on the initial course.

One last thought for now...

While wrapping up the 12 bolt posi rear end, ran into a few assembly challenges. Travis at Pro Performance provided all the necessary spec info and made multiple phone calls to suppliers... which was necessary to sort out the issues. To have a vendor sell their product AND provide follow up support has a value that is rarely seen nowadays. Thanks Travis... you da man (and Haik said you're a good dude also...haha)

Thanks. We'll see how the vintage surf theme plays out over the build, it sounds good but will see if it comes together. To keep the vintage style going, decided on an 18" Detroit Steel Wheel smoothie with beauty ring and clipped for the painted 65 dog dish. Took a while to find an 18" wheel that had a steel beauty ring, everything else I saw used a plated ABS ring. Using an 18"x8" wheel with a 4.5" backspace wearing a 255x55x18 tire.

Deep into some of the sheet metal mods (big window conversion, 1960 grille, etc) will post updates once something gets done. Thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback... The wheels are the Detroit Steel Wheel 'smoothies' that I had clips placed to fit the '65 dog dish hub cap. It took me a bit to source 8 hubcaps that all looked similar - needed 5 for the truck but figured a couple will spin off, over time, down the highway.

Working on 'roughing in' the sheet metal mods to meet a deadline to send the body out for bodywork/paint. Will be working on a Pro Touring chassis while the tin is away.

Just doing most of the mods you all have done in the past...

Should have rear window cut out this coming week. Things on the schedule for next 2 weeks... finish up rear window conversion, fit up new tilt steering column with a 1960 Chevy Bel Air steering wheel and hopefully get instrument cluster back from rebuild and a modded 1969 Corvair clock...

Hopefully... send off front/rear bumper, grill and wheels to powdercoat - they will be a creme/tan color with a shade darker grille insert and 'eyebrows'

On your big back window conversion did you use a donor inside panel. I've seen a couple of different ways to do it, but that seems to have the cleanest out come.

Using Scott's conversion panel... very easy to use, made great and simple instructions.

You can see the 'rough cut' here... still needs clean up, adjust for back glass and finish outer perimeter.

Definitely changes the open-ness of the cab... Added in the anchor points for the shoulder straps just before it was tacked in (rear mirror in the way).

Just getting everything back to finish 'mock-up' so the body can be removed. Then it will be chassis modifications while the sheet metal is being painted. Should have a few worthwhile updates soon...
