Lets see your welding carts!!

Thinking of building a new welding cart for the shop. I've got an old tool box and just wanted to see what's out there.

I've got one to beat everyone! I took the old rotted out center section of a gas grille and removed all of the cooking area. Then I added a wide board there where the grille part went then I placed my welder plasma combo on it and held it in place with a ratch strap. I have had this stetup for over like 3 years and it is perfect for what I need it to do. It is ugly like me but does its job and waste nothing, I even use the box that the machine came in turned over up side down to cover the machine to keep it clean in the body shop as it gets pretty dusty as ya'll could imagine. Total cost in the welder cart ZERO!!! if I remember I will try to get some pics when I go to the shop next time. Jim

I hear you. Just finished up my shop and now just working to get it all set up. I've got a welding cart I got from HF. I just think it would be good to have some storage on the cart

There was a pretty badass one in HotRod or CarCraft magazine a few months back. I'll see if I can find it.

4'x2'x3/8" top, built in my garage last winter and it's invaluable. The vise is a 4" English made machinist's vise of 60's vintage. It was barely used when I picked it up from Craigslist. I'd like to add another platform on the opposite end for a plasma cutter when I get one.

That's what I'm talking about. Work bench and welding station in one.

I was thinking of a wood top. Would metal be better?

Wood burns and metal doesn't, but the biggest reason would have to be that your smaller welding projects can be grounded through the benchtop, so there is no need to attach the ground clamp to the workpiece itself.

My first welding cart/bench was a pair of plastic Stanley saw horses and a piece if 2'x3'x3/16" plate. Worked fine for several years till I made my 60" square table.

Re: Lets see your welding carts!!

What's wrong with a cabinet? Nice flat top and storage? I see an issue with sparks but you aren't welding on top of it. Also I agree a metal top is ideal that way anything on the table is grounded only issue with that again is it can arc to the table and stick possibly leaving small divots in the flat surface or an end. Unlikely but it happens its always ideal to ground directly on the part your welding. Been welding since I was 15 ;)

I used a gas grill frame too for years. it was rickety wobbly and just terrible.
but it was salvagable so one day I decided too fix it up and bolted a 1/4 thick top on it and made a shelf on the bottom put some hooks on the side for cords it was looking good with fresh dollar store paint job and all. I wheeled it outa the basement to push it out too the garage but got I got sidetracked(her) and left it outside the basement doors near the garbage cans;) of course when she got up the next day she pushed it too the curb with the trash cans:dohh: later that day I got home and thought wth did i put the cart at:lol: then thinking about the day prior,I went out too get the cart and it was gone???? I never even got too use my fixed up spiffy grill framed welding cart. but I'm sure the trashman was happy too take it:lol:
I said too her "did it look like trash?".....she said "well no but YOU DID have it out at the cans on trash day".......

oh well
