Time to Cut the Hill again
2 Attachment(s)
I’m on just over 1/2 acre, the back half goes up a hill and does nothing but grow weeds. I have to cut those weeds every year for Fire Abatement.
Takes ~ 8 hrs with a weed eater This is my 28 th Year |
Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
Time to consider buying a Zero Turn or ZTR style mower. I mow just over 2 acres on the edge of our town. Went from almost 4 1/2 - 5 hours on a tractor style to about 2 1/2 hrs using a ZTR. That's mowing with a 48'' deck. Could have gone with a 54'' or 60'' but have a few too many tight spaces the 48'' works better. I'm mowing mostly flat land with the exception of a couple steep ditch sides. ZTR is not happy on the slanted ditch but it gets it mowed. Can't mow ditches if grass has very much dew or is a bit wet. Of course, mowing wet grassy areas doesn't work very well anyway.

Pace yourself for sure. We've got to go to Napa on Saturday, heard your neck of the woods going to warm up a bit. ;)

Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
One of my school bud's dad was the maintenance & grounds keeper at our hospital and was quite a designer/builder too. The hospital sat on top of a pretty good hill and it had lots of grass to mow. Too steep for any conventional mower so he built a riding mower himself that sat high on one side and low on the other for cutting that hillside one direction, then change the high and low sides to go the other direction. My bud was just as gifted. Of course, it was 50 years ago so I don't remember any particulars about it.

Tracked zero turn....https://altoz.com/tracked-zero-turn-mowers/trx
Weed eating the hill is probably the more economical choice, even if you have to contract it out. |
Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
I used one of these style mower for hills and the swampy areas. Always though it was a neat idea.
Hover Mower Since your in Kali, you might need an electric one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2Ii-MoNbQw |
Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
Maybe goats are the answer. I hear there are people to call who will bring in some goats to clear growth. Low environmental impact too. ;)

Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
Goats will eat a dry thorny weed before good green grass.
They are a little tricky to contain though, you need a good fairly tall fence they can't jump and or crawl under. |

Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
Any kinda Mower won’t work. The weeds are almost waist high( Im 6’ 2”) and on a 30+ deg angle. It gets harder every Year, I’m pushing 70

I was grounds maint mgr at a large plant. Our groundskeeper asked for a two handled/ self propelled weedeater (with wheels). It worked great. That type of machine is a backsaver.

These Sickle bar mowers work great as well to get it cut down they will even find 2" pvc well heads and cut them off clean. I had a troybilt one that I used to clear many acres with.
Self propelled as well . |
Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
crazy lawn mower video is the method I would use. That is just fantastic. With a winch you can send a lawnmower down and back up the hill numerous times until it is done. Add an umbrella and iced tea for the winch operator.

Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
crazy lawn mower video idea can be done with weed eater too. Just build a frame out of angle iron on which to mount 1, 2, or 3 weed eaters. Add wheels. Winch it up and down the hill.

Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
Hire it done this year.
Spray with roundup next year once the grass is tall enough to stop soil erosion. |
Re: Time to Cut the Hill again
I'd rather do that a few times a year with a normal mower then once a year with a whacker. F that noise.

I've got a buddy who owns a bunch of rental houses. He uses several of them for storage of his personal stuff and when mowing season comes along, he uses roundup on some of the lawns to reduce his outlay in expense and effort keeping things in shape. -Kevin |
