My modified van tilt column
Finally remembered to take some pics of my tilt column that I installed a month or so ago. This is a mid 70's automatic van tilt column that I modified for my manual 4 speed truck. That involved shaving off the tilt shifter attachment point and removing the shift indicator housing and filling in both areas.
Here are some pics of the modification process. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...093/image1.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...093/image4.jpg I cut a beer can up to fill in the various holes and used JB weld to secure them and fill in the areas. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...93/image10.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...093/image9.jpg Then ground it smooth. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...93/image16.jpg And here is the finished product. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...lumntilt07.jpg Not sure if I like the steering wheel - might change it down the road. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...lumntilt09.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...lunntilt08.jpg |
Re: My modified van tilt column
Here's some more info. I added a Borgeson telescopic shaft (1" DD x 3/4" DD) to my 69 K20. I had previously added a Borgeson U-joint at the steering column.
Here is a pic of the u-joint which is 3/4" x 30 spline and 1" DD to fit the power steering box I'm using which is from about a 1978 Chevy 4x4. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...gboxujoint.jpg and a pic of it at the steering column - the steering column was not secured to the firewall when I took the picture so ignore the block of wood that has the column wedged in place. That U-joint is 3/4" x 36 spline and 3/4" DD. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...lumnujoint.jpg The telescopic shaft ended up being about 11 1/2" long. |
