99-01 Silverado are great trucks
I've put about 150K miles on a 2001 1500 Silverado and so far have had no problems with it. I've done basic maintenance and fluid changes. I hope to get 300K+ miles out of this truck. 5.7 Vortec 4l60e tranny 4x4

Ummmm let’s talk about this 5.7
1999+ Silverados/Sierras didn’t come with 5.7s from the factory. Your 2001 Silverado should have a 4.8 or 5.3, unless it’s a V6 then a 4.3. Then if you have a 1500HD, a 6.0 is what you see under the hood. Just check the 8th digit of the vin to figure out the engine size. For the gen III LS motors: W = 4.3 V = 4.8 T = 5.3 U = 6.0 |

5.3L was definitely the sweet spot, and outperformed both the 4.8L and the 6.0L from a power or cost per displacement perspective.
The marketing and planning teams kind of blew it on that one. They wanted to induce most people to get the 4.8L, as lower cost and better fuel economy (to help with corporate fuel economy standards). What they failed to realize is that most truck buyers want the biggest engine they can get, regardless. ;) |

You are correct, R = 5.7. However, that’s a Gen II SBC for the GMT400 platform. It’s not an LS based engine. LS1 was the only 5.7 LS based engine, but they never offered them in a truck. The OP has a 2001 Silverado, which is on the GMT800 platform, which is is why I said let’s talk about it. I was hoping he had a unicorn…lol

I love my 99 Silverado 1500, I'll love it more when I eventually upgrade from the 4.3 V6 to a 5.3 LS. Planning to keep the 5 speed though.

Love my 2 wheel drive 99 SWB Silverado 1500 5.3L.
It may be worth more than I paid for it @175K miles. I have only seen a few with the 5.3L motor. Motor has been issue free. All the window lift motors have been replaced at lest once. The heater core has to be back-flushed often. I even change and flush the antifreeze? Haven't figured this one out. Transmission has been rebuilt twice. Once with 60K on it and the second with 160K on it. Both times the center shell broke at the hub. Emergency brake is a joke. Requires replacement every-time I do the rear brakes. It is never used, I mean never as it is a automatic. I have changed plugs and wires once. That's it on the motor. Not even a sensor failure! Worst item is the seat. I don't know what GM was thinking it sucked, for me anyway. I replaced the sets with buckets from a 2003. I would have sold the truck without the seat replacement. Radio wasn't very good from the factory and the CD player went out years ago. Updated the radio to a large panel with hands free and Apple Play. Makes the old truck tolerable with a modern radio. Still it is inexpensive per mile. I just checked the mileage on a 200 mile trip, mostly highway, it got 17mpg. Owned it for over 20 years. Truck owes me nothing. |

One of GM’s best and most reliable designs in my opinion. I’ve put all 301k miles on my 01 K1500 and it’s still my daily driver. Very reliable truck - engine never apart (wish I could say that for the trans) and I’ll drive it til the wheels fall off, which hopefully isn’t any time soon. I did recently learn the hard way that the factory plastic heater core coupler fittings are a weak point on hi-miler GMT800s. Since I have more than one 2001, I bought a couple of the metal replacement fittings and a couple of cheap plastic disconnect tools and stashed em in the gloveboxes in case it ever happens again (further from home).

I've never had anything newer than a gMT400 and those are also dead reliable hi-mile well designed trucks, what these trucks came from.
Didn't GM continue calling the engines Vortec in this series? Like I said, never owned one but I've seen plenty of LS engines that said Vortec. But we refer to them as LS and the GMT400 one Vortec to differentiate from TBIs. I'm not sure the 4.8 wasn't a good idea. Not much smaller than the 5.3, only used in lighter trucks, more power than previous 305, and fantastic mpg. Also, as mentioned, served to get the entire like under the EPA radar for those who want more power. I'd sure like to be getting 20 mpg these days. And there are replacements for displacement these days. |

Yes, they still use the vortec nomenclature across the board.
What’s funny is that the “LS” name given to 3rd and 4th generation Chevy engines was partly created by GM and the consumers. LS came from from the first version of the 3rd gen GM motor that was in the 1997 corvette. The RPO code was LS1. So everybody referred to it as the LS motor, even though not all the RPO variants had LS in it, i.e. LM7, LQ4, LQ9, LS2, etc. Same holds true for the 5th gen engines with the LT1 RPO code found in the 2014 Corvette, but everyone says LT engine. It’s like the Crescent wrench and how Crescent was the manufacture of that style of wrench, but still today everybody says a Crescent wrench to describe the style of wrench and not the manufacturer. |

It's mostly just a firewood truck for me so it would have been fine with just an old straight six. The GMT400 is quite a bit smaller than my old 76 GMC. That works out good for slipping between trees but I had to mount my saw box lengthwise instead of crosswise, and the crossover box that fits the square body won't fit between the rails on the 89. Funny, the newer trucks like my 2016 are huge on the outside but small on the inside of the bed. I'm not sure what the idea was? There must be something like eight inches of empty space between the inner and outer bed sides! |

I have a 2001 Silverado extended cab 4x4 z71. I bought it new with 24 miles, it currently has 136,000k. It’s been a great truck minus the clear coat flaking off. I’m going to keep it until the wheels fall off.
