Roof racks?

Anyone build a custom roof rack for their Blazer? I was thinking of putting something like this together but maybe a little lower profile and squared edges instead of curved. Any roof rack pics for inspiration would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: Roof racks?

The only one I've seen that looked sturdy enough mounted to the body like a safari rack. There was a guy posting on steelsoldiers.com that was making them, or planned to anyway - I haven't been on that site in a long time. The top is so thin in spots I'd be scared to put much weight on it bouncing down the road for fear of flexing and eventual cracks.

I'd suggest you check out www.coloradok5.com if you want to see multiple examples of roof racks on a Blazer. Also, you might check the forums on www.expeditionportal.com. Both those guys get real serious about building roof racks on their rigs.

And don't worry too much about the structural integrity of the K5 fiberglass roof, they are much stronger and more durable than most folks give them credit for. I've owned a 78 GMC Jimmy for over 30 years that has had both a roof rack as well as a spare tire carrier mounted to the removable roof, and there have been zero consequences with over 200K miles of bad Northern Rockies roads. Check out the pictures - no cracks ever. There is a slight bow in the roof now, but no structural damage, and believe me that tire was heavy.

One thing I forgot to mention - don't discount the utility of the factory optional roof racks for the Blazer. You didn't mention what your intended purpose was, but unless it involves ridiculously heavy or tall items you should be fine using a factory rack. I see plenty in the junk yards that I frequent in my area, and they aren't hard to install. Any from 76 on through the end of the run in 91 will work fine, and I happen to think they look better than the homemade ones as well.

I just want something to maybe throw a little extra camping gear on sometimes and I need to re-mount my spare which takes up some of the room inside ...And I just think roof racks look cool :)
I've looked out for factory racks over the last year or so and haven't really seen any
